    Subtotal esophagectomy with extended lymph node dissection is a standard procedure for thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Three-field lymphadenectomy, including neck dissection, is a standard type of lymph node dissection for complete clearance of tumor cells. Based on various series of analyses for lymph node metastases, the appropriate indication for neck dissection has been clarified. Herein, we describe the established techniques of neck dissection and review recent topics of three-field lymph node dissection for thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

    Ownership structure, limits to arbitrage and stock returns: evidence from equity lending markets

    We examine how institutional ownership structure gives rise to limits to arbitrage through its impact on short-sale constraints. Stocks with lower, more concentrated, short-term, and less passive ownership exhibit lower lending supply, higher costs of shorting, and higher arbitrage risk. These constraints limit the ability of arbitrageurs to take short positions and delay the correction of mispricing. Stocks with more concentrated ownership exhibit smaller announcement day reactions, larger post-earnings announcement drift, and an additional negative abnormal return of 0.47% in the week following a positive shorting demand shock

    A Possible Anticancer Agent, Type III Interferon, Activates Cell Death Pathways and Produces Antitumor Effects

    Recently identified interleukin-28 and -29 belong to a novel type III interferon (IFN) family, which could have distinct biological properties from type I and II IFNs. Type I IFNs, IFN-α/β, have been clinically applied for treating a certain kind of malignancies for over 30 years, but a wide range of the adverse effects hampered the further clinical applications. Type III IFNs, IFN-λs, have similar signaling pathways as IFN-α/β and inhibits proliferation of tumor cells through cell cycle arrest or apoptosis. Restricted patterns of type III IFN receptor expression in contrast to ubiquitously expressed IFN-α/β receptors suggest that type III IFNs have limited cytotoxicity to normal cells and can be a possible anticancer agent. In this paper, we summarize the current knowledge on the IFN-λs-mediated tumor cell death and discuss the functional difference between type I and III IFNs

    Do Interactive Texts Promote Understanding?

    A text format is used in which learners imitate a scene where people like a teacher and learner interact so that beginners may more easily start learning. On the other hand, previous research on interactive texts has shown that they do not always promote understanding and are not appreciated by readers as easy to read. However, since this format has already been widely adopted in introductory books and elementary school textbooks, it is necessary to consider how to make such interactive texts easier to understand. Therefore, in this study, we tried to make the conversation style as natural as possible and used interactive texts with icons to make it easier to identify the speakers. Furthermore, we developed an interactive text that includes not only dialogues that include“ questions” that have been used in previous research but also dialogues that prompt a“ summary” and verified the effects.     Thrombin Stimulates Synthesis of Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor, Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor and Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor by Human Proximal Tubular Epithelial Cells in Culture

    Background/Aims: Colony-stimulating factors (CSFs) are well-known hematopoietic growth factors. Although recent studies revealed that CSFs are involved in many inflammatory conditions, the local production of CSFs and its regulation in the kidney is not well elucidated. Therefore, using cultured human proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTEC), we examined the effect of thrombin on CSFs production, since thrombin has been suggested to play an important role in tubulointerstitial injury. Methods: PTEC were incubated with thrombin (0.5–5.0 U/ml) and the effects on the production of macrophage CSF (M-CSF), granulocyte-macrophage CSF (GM-CSF) and granulocyte CSF (G-CSF) were measured in the cell supernatant by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the expressions of mRNA were analyzed by quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Using argatroban, a direct thrombin inhibitor, we also examined the specific effect of thrombin. Results: Thrombin 5.0 U/ml significantly stimulated the production of M-CSF (p Conclusion: We demonstrated that thrombin significantly increased the production of CSFs by PTEC. These data suggest that the local production of CSFs in the tubulointerstitium may affect tubulointerstitial lesions in kidney injury

    Photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy tunable photons on oxygen-deficient iron-based oxypnictide superconductors NdFeAsO0.85 (Tc=52K) reveals a distinct photon-energy dependence of the electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF). A clear shift of the leading-edge can be observed in the superconducting states with 9.5 eV photons, while a clear Fermi cutoff with little leading-edge shift can be observed with 6.0 eV photons. The results are indicative of the superconducting gap opening not on the hole-like ones around Gamma (0,0) point but on the electron-like sheets around M(pi,pi) point.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Transient and permanent gene transfer into the brain of the teleost fish medaka (Oryzias latipes) using human adenovirus and the Cre-loxP system

    AbstractIn this study, we demonstrated that human type-5 adenovirus infected the brain of the teleost fish, medaka (Oryzias latipes), in vivo. Injection of adenoviral vector into the mesencephalic ventricle of medaka larvae induced the expression of reporter genes in some parts of the telencephalon, the periventricular area of the mesencephalon and diencephalon, and the cerebellum. Additionally, the Cre-loxP system works in medaka brains using transgenic medaka carrying a vector containing DsRed2, flanked by loxP sites under control of the β-actin promoter and downstream promoterless enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). We demonstrated that the presence of green fluorescence depended on injection of adenoviral vector expressing the Cre gene and confirmed that EGFP mRNA was transcribed in the virus-injected larvae

    Quality of Life in Patients with Minimal Change Nephrotic Syndrome

    Aim. The goal of the study was to investigate quality of life (QOL) in adult patients with minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) and to test the relationship of QOL with the level of self-care. Materials and Methods. We distributed two questionnaires to 30 outpatients with MCNS. The MOS 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36v2) was used to examine health-related QOL in comparison with normative data from the general Japanese population and a population with two chronic diseases. SF-36v2 consists of 36 questions classified into 8 subscales. We also used the Self-Care Behavior Scale for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), which consists of 31 questions with 4 subscales. Results. The SF-36v2 social functioning subscale was most impaired and bodily pain was least affected in patients with MCNS. The self-care subscales of information/communication and positive behavior had positive correlations with the QOL subscales of mental health () and vitality (). The correlation between social functioning and information/communication was close to significant (). Conclusion. In MCNS, social functioning was particularly impaired. Our results suggest that better self-care can have a positive impact on QOL in patients with MCNS
