Direct approach to the problem of strong local minima in Calculus of Variations

The paper introduces a general strategy for identifying strong local minimizers of variational functionals. It is based on the idea that any variation of the integral functional can be evaluated directly in terms of the appropriate parameterized measures. We demonstrate our approach on a problem of W^{1,infinity} weak-* local minima--a slight weakening of the classical notion of strong local minima. We obtain the first quasiconvexity-based set of sufficient conditions for W^{1,infinity} weak-* local minima.Comment: 26 pages, no figure

Heavy Quarks on Anisotropic Lattices: The Charmonium Spectrum

    Get PDF
We present results for the mass spectrum of ccˉc{\bar c} mesons simulated on anisotropic lattices where the temporal spacing ata_t is only half of the spatial spacing asa_s. The lattice QCD action is the Wilson gauge action plus the clover-improved Wilson fermion action. The two clover coefficients on an anisotropic lattice are estimated using mean links in Landau gauge. The bare velocity of light νt\nu_t has been tuned to keep the anisotropic, heavy-quark Wilson action relativistic. Local meson operators and three box sources are used in obtaining clear statistics for the lowest lying and first excited charmonium states of 1S0^1S_0, 3S1^3S_1, 1P1^1P_1, 3P0^3P_0 and 3P1^3P_1. The continuum limit is discussed by extrapolating from quenched simulations at four lattice spacings in the range 0.1 - 0.3 fm. Results are compared with the observed values in nature and other lattice approaches. Finite volume effects and dispersion relations are checked.Comment: 36 pages, 6 figur

    Preconditioning for nonsymmetry and time-dependence

In this short paper, we decribe at least one simple and frequently arising situation |that of nonsymmetric real Toeplitz (constant diagonal) matrices| where we can guarantee rapid convergence of the appropriate iterative method by manipulating the problem into a symmetric form without recourse to the normal equations. This trick can be applied regardless of the nonnormality of the Toeplitz matrix. We also propose a symmetric and positive definite preconditioner for this situation which is proved to cluster eigenvalues and is by consequence guaranteed to ensure convergence in a number of iterations independent of the matrix dimension

A proposal of PSO particles' initialization, for costly unconstrained optimization problems: ORTHOinit

    Get PDF
Abstract. A proposal for particles’ initialization in PSO is presented and discussed, with focus on costly global unconstrained optimization problems. The standard PSO iteration is reformulated such that the trajectories of the particles are studied in an extended space, combining particles’ position and speed. To the aim of exploring effectively and efficiently the optimization search space since the early iterations, the particles are initialized using sets of orthogonal vectors in the extended space (orthogonal initialization, ORTHOinit). Theoretical derivation and application to a simulation-based optimization problem in ship design are presented, showing the potential benefits of the current approach

Augmented Lagrangian Method for Constrained Nuclear Density Functional Theory

    Get PDF
The augmented Lagrangiam method (ALM), widely used in quantum chemistry constrained optimization problems, is applied in the context of the nuclear Density Functional Theory (DFT) in the self-consistent constrained Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (CHFB) variant. The ALM allows precise calculations of multidimensional energy surfaces in the space of collective coordinates that are needed to, e.g., determine fission pathways and saddle points; it improves accuracy of computed derivatives with respect to collective variables that are used to determine collective inertia; and is well adapted to supercomputer applications.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; to appear in Eur. Quasiconvexity at the boundary and the nucleation of austenite

    Get PDF
Motivated by experimental observations of H. Seiner et al., we study the nucleation of austenite in a single crystal of a CuAlNi shape-memory alloy stabilized as a single variant of martensite. In the experiments the nucleation process was induced by localized heating and it was observed that, regardless of where the localized heating was applied, the nucleation points were always located at one of the corners of the sample - a rectangular parallelepiped in the austenite. Using a simplified nonlinear elasticity model, we propose an explanation for the location of the nucleation points by showing that the martensite is a local minimizer of the energy with respect to localized variations in the interior, on faces and edges of the sample, but not at some corners, where a localized microstructure, involving austenite and a simple laminate of martensite, can lower the energy. The result for the interior, faces and edges is established by showing that the free-energy function satisfies a set of quasiconvexity conditions at the stabilized variant in the interior, faces and edges, respectively, provided the specimen is suitably cut

The type II-plateau supernova 2017eaw in NGC 6946 and its red supergiant progenitor

We present extensive optical photometric and spectroscopic observations, from 4 to 482 days after explosion, of the Type II-plateau (II-P) supernova (SN) 2017eaw in NGC 6946. SN 2017eaw is a normal SN II-P intermediate in properties between, for example, SN 1999em and SN 2012aw and the more luminous SN 2004et, also in NGC 6946. We have determined that the extinction to SN 2017eaw is primarily due to the Galactic foreground and that the SN site metallicity is likely subsolar. We have also independently confirmed a tip-of-the-red-giant-branch (TRGB) distance to NGC 6946 of 7.73 ± 0.78 Mpc. The distances to the SN that we have also estimated via both the standardized candle method and expanding photosphere method corroborate the TRGB distance. We confirm the SN progenitor identity in pre-explosion archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Spitzer Space Telescope images, via imaging of the SN through our HST Target of Opportunity program. Detailed modeling of the progenitor's spectral energy distribution indicates that the star was a dusty, luminous red supergiant consistent with an initial mass of ~15 M ⊙
