On the degenerated soft-mode instability
We consider instabilities of a single mode with finite wavenumber in
inversion symmetric spatially one dimensional systems, where the character of
the bifurcation changes from sub- to supercritical behaviour. Starting from a
general equation of motion the full amplitude equation is derived
systematically and formulas for the dependence of the coefficients on the
system parameters are obtained. We emphasise the importance of nonlinear
derivative terms in the amplitude equation for the behaviour in the vicinity of
the bifurcation point. Especially the numerical values of the corresponding
coefficients determine the region of coexistence between the stable trivial
solution and stable spatially periodic patterns. Our approach clearly shows
that similar considerations fail for the case of oscillatory instabilities.Comment: 16 pages, uses iop style files, manuscript also available at

User's manual for the Shuttle Electric Power System analysis computer program (SEPS), volume 2 of program documentation
The Shuttle Electric Power System Analysis SEPS computer program which performs detailed load analysis including predicting energy demands and consumables requirements of the shuttle electric power system along with parameteric and special case studies on the shuttle electric power system is described. The functional flow diagram of the SEPS program is presented along with data base requirements and formats, procedure and activity definitions, and mission timeline input formats. Distribution circuit input and fixed data requirements are included. Run procedures and deck setups are described
Quasi-Stationary Approximation of a Dynamical Model of MicroRNA Target Regulation. Part II. Application of the QSSA Theorem
The QSSA theorem is applied to the dynamical model of microRNA target regulation after special selection of model variables, presented in Part I of this article. On the basis of this theorem the complete model, represented as a system of seven nonlinear ordinary differential equations, is reduced to a degenerate one, comprising only two ordinary differential equations. As a result it is proved that the proteins, produced by miRNAs are identified to play a driving role of the dynamical behaviour of the genetic process investigated, but in post-initial (or quasi-stationary) stage
Quasi-Stationary Approximation of a Dynamical Model of microRNA Target Regulation. Part I. Establishment of Time Hierarchy in the Model Dynamics
The Quasi-Steady-State Approximation (QSSA) theorem is considered as a basic approach for reduction of dimensionality of a dynamical model of microRNA target regulation. On the basis of previously determined parameters, seven ordinary differential equations of the model are written in a form appropriate to evaluate their terms for further reduction. In accordance with the terminology of the QSSA theorem, it is established that five of the system components are fast varying such that the corresponding kinetic equations form an attached system. The other two variables are slow varying and their kinetic equations form a degenerate system
[Premier paragraphe
Multidimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the hydrogen injection flash
The injection of hydrogen into the convection shell powered by helium burning
during the core helium flash is commonly encountered during the evolution of
metal-free and extremely metal-poor low-mass stars. With specifically designed
multidimensional hydrodynamic simulations, we aim to prove that an entropy
barrier is no obstacle for the growth of the helium-burning shell convection
zone in the helium core of a metal-rich Pop I star, i.e. convection can
penetrate into the hydrogen-rich layers for these stars, too. We further study
whether this is also possible in one-dimensional stellar evolutionary
calculations. Our hydrodynamical simulations show that the helium-burning shell
convection zone in the helium core moves across the entropy barrier and reaches
the hydrogen-rich layers. This leads to mixing of protons into the hotter
layers of the core and to a rapid increase of the nuclear energy production at
the upper edge of the helium-burning convection shell - the hydrogen injection
flash. As a result a second convection zone appears in the hydrogen-rich
layers. Contrary to 1D models, the entropy barrier separating the two
convective shells from each other is largely permeable to chemical transport
when allowing for multidimensional flow, and consequently, hydrogen is
continuously mixed deep into the helium core. We find it difficult to achieve
such a behavior in one-dimensional stellar evolutionary calculations.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures - accepted for publication in Astronomy and

Friction and Wear in Automotive Journal Bearings Operating in Today’s Severe Conditions
A current trend in the transport sector seeks to increase the vehicle efficiency and to cut fuel consumption which leads to new technologies and advancements in modern and future combustion engines. Some of these technical progresses lead to highly stressed engine parts and new challenges arise, particularly for journal bearings. The increasing thermal and mechanical load caused by downsized and turbocharged engines, friction reduction by employing low-viscosity lubricants and other emission reduction measures—for utilizing stop-start systems—put additional stress on the crankshaft journal bearings. This contribution focuses on highly stressed journal bearings which operate in the boundary, mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication regime. Therefore, measurements on a journal bearing test-rig are performed which allow an extensive verification of the numerical investigation. For the numerical analysis of friction and wear, a mixed elasto-hydrodynamic simulation approach is developed, which considers the elastic deformation of the contacting components, the complex rheological behaviour of the lubricant and metal-metal contact if the lubricant is unable to separate the contacting surfaces. Both the rheological data and the surface roughness parameters are obtained from measurements. The current challenges are studied in four application-oriented examples and the influencing parameters on a reliable friction and wear prediction are explored
The effect of 12C + 12C rate uncertainties on s-process yields
The slow neutron capture process in massive stars (the weak s-process)
produces most of the s-only isotopes in the mass region 60 < A < 90. The
nuclear reaction rates used in simulations of this process have a profound
effect on the final s-process yields. We generated 1D stellar models of a 25
solar mass star varying the 12C + 12C rate by a factor of 10 and calculated
full nucleosynthesis using the post-processing code PPN. Increasing or
decreasing the rate by a factor of 10 affects the convective history and
nucleosynthesis, and consequently the final yields.Comment: Conference proceedings for the Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics IV
