    Proton-proton bremsstrahlung below and above pion-threshold: the influence of the Δ\Delta-isobar

    The proton-proton bremsstrahlung is investigated within a coupled-channel model with the Δ\Delta degree of freedom. The model is consistent with the NNNN scattering up to 1 GeV and the ÎłNΔ\gamma N\Delta vertex determined in the study of pion photoproduction reactions. It is found that the Δ\Delta excitation can significantly improve the agreements with the pp→ppÎłpp \rightarrow pp\gamma at Elab=280E_{lab}=280 MeV. Predictions at Elab=550E_{lab}=550 and 800800 MeV are presented for future experimental tests.Comment: 26 pages Revtex, 12 figures are available from the authors upon request ([email protected]

    Prevalences of hyperhomocysteinemia, unfavorable cholesterol profile and hypertension in European populations

    Item does not contain fulltextBACKGROUND: Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHCY) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). HHCY may interact with hypertension (HTEN) and an unfavorable cholesterol profile (UNFAVCHOL) to alter the risk of CVD. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalences of HHCY (1) isolated and (2) in combination with UNFAVCHOL and/or HTEN in different age categories. To provide information that may improve the screening and treatment of subjects at risk of CVD. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data on 12,541 men and 12,948 women aged 20 + y were used from nine European studies. RESULTS: The prevalence of isolated HHCY was 8.5% in subjects aged 20-40 y, 4.7% in subjects aged 40-60 y and 5.9% in subjects aged over 60 y. When combining all age groups, 5.3% had isolated HHCY and an additional 5.6% had HHCY in combination with HTEN and/or UNFAVCHOL. The combinations of risk factors increased with age and, except for HHCY&UNFAVCHOL, were more prevalent than predicted by chance. Of the young subjects (20-40 y), 24% suffered from one or more of the investigated CVD risk factors. This figure was 75.1% in the old subjects (60+ years). CONCLUSIONS: A substantial number of subjects in selected European populations have HHCY (10.9%). In half of these cases, subjects suffer also from other CVD risk factors like UNFAVCHOL and HTEN. Older people in particular tend to have more than one risk factor. Healthcare professionals should be aware of this when screening and treating older people not only for the conventional CVD risk factors like UNFAVCHOL and HTEN but also HHCY, as this can easily be reduced through increased intake of folic acid via supplement or foods fortified with folic acid

    Deletion and duplication of DNA sequences is associated with the embryonic lethal phenotype of the t9 complementation group of the mouse t complex.

    We have analyzed the genomic structure of three mouse t haplotypes of the t9 complementation group. Each of these t haplotypes, tw18, t4, and tks1, is known to have resulted from a rare recombination event between a complete t haplotype and a wild-type chromosome. Using molecular probes that identify sequences in the distal portion of the t complex, we have shown that each of these t haplotypes contains a similar (perhaps identical) deletion of one group of t complex sequences, and duplication of another group. These data suggest that the recombination events that produced these three t haplotypes involved similar unequal crossovers within the distal inversion. The deletion and duplication of genetic material associated with all members of the t9 complementation group tested provides a molecular explanation for the recessive lethal mutation associated with these t haplotypes

    Whole exome resequencing reveals recessive mutations in TRAP1 in individuals with CAKUT and VACTERL association

    Congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) account for approximately half of children with chronic kidney disease and they are the most frequent cause of end-stage renal disease in children in the US. However, its genetic etiology remains mostly elusive. VACTERL association is a rare disorder that involves congenital abnormalities in multiple organs including the kidney and urinary tract in up to 60% of the cases. By homozygosity mapping and whole exome resequencing combined with high-throughput mutation analysis by array-based multiplex PCR and next-generation sequencing, we identified recessive mutations in the gene TNF receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP1) in two families with isolated CAKUT and three families with VACTERL association. TRAP1 is a heat shock protein 90-related mitochondrial chaperone possibly involved in antiapoptotic and endoplasmic reticulum-stress signaling. Trap1 is expressed in renal epithelia of developing mouse kidney E13.5 and in the kidney of adult rats, most prominently in proximal tubules and in thick medullary ascending limbs of Henle’s loop. Thus, we identified mutations in TRAP1 as highly likely causing CAKUT or CAKUT in VACTERL association

    Transient thermal finite element analysis of CFC–Cu ITER monoblock using X-ray tomography data

    The thermal performance of a carbon fibre composite-copper monoblock, a sub-component of a fusion reactor divertor, was investigated by finite element analysis. High-accuracy simulations were created using an emerging technique, image-based finite element modelling, which converts X-ray tomography data into micro-structurally faithful models, capturing details such as manufacturing defects. For validation, a case study was performed where the thermal analysis by laser flash of a carbon fibre composite-copper disc was simulated such that computational and experimental results could be compared directly. Results showed that a high resolution image-based simulation (102 million elements of 32 ÎĽm width) provided increased accuracy over a low resolution image-based simulation (0.6 million elements of 194 ÎĽm width) and idealised computer aided design simulations. Using this technique to analyse a monoblock mock-up, it was possible to detect and quantify the effects of debonding regions at the carbon fibre composite-copper interface likely to impact both component performance and expected lifetime. These features would not have been accounted for in idealised computer aided design simulations

    Allan Sandage and the Cosmic Expansion

    This is an account of Allan Sandage's work on (1) The character of the expansion field. For many years he has been the strongest defender of an expanding Universe. He later explained the CMB dipole by a local velocity of 220 +/- 50 km/s toward the Virgo cluster and by a bulk motion of the Local supercluster (extending out to ~3500 km/s) of 450-500 km/s toward an apex at l=275, b=12. Allowing for these streaming velocities he found linear expansion to hold down to local scales (~300 km/s). (2) The calibration of the Hubble constant. Probing different methods he finally adopted - from Cepheid-calibrated SNe Ia and from independent RR Lyr-calibrated TRGBs - H_0 = 62.3 +/- 1.3 +/- 5.0 km/s/Mpc.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, Submitted to Astrophysics and Space Science, Special Issue on the Fundamental Cosmic Distance Scale in the Gaia Er
