3D-Modellierung mit interaktiven Oberflächen
3D models are at the core of many important applications from industry, science, and also entertainment. The creation of 3D models is a complex and time consuming process. Current modeling tools are hard to learn and require a deep understanding of the underlying mathematical models. Furthermore, established input devices like the mouse and keyboard do not utilize the full interaction potential -- especially regarding bimanual control -- of the human hand. The growing interest and the commercial breakthrough of multi-touch displays and interactive surfaces raises questions about their potential in the context of 3d modeling, which are thoroughly discussed and evaluated in this work. The presented approach is closely aligned to the whole processing chain for multi-touch applications, starting with the hardware and tracking issues, continuing with fundamental design discussions and operations like selection and 3D manipulation of objects and finishing with complex modeling techniques and metaphors. In regard to hardware and tracking, a robust illumination setup for the diffuse illumination technique is presented along with two extensions of this approach, i.e., hover detection and hand distinction. The design space is organized into specific design dimensions characterized by extremal positions to allow a better overview of design choices and a classification of existing and future systems. Fundamental techniques for selection and integrated 3D manipulation with six degrees of freedom are presented and empirically evaluated. Finally, two established modeling techniques -- implicit surfaces and virtual sculpting -- are extended and evaluated for multi-touch input

Coordinating vector field equations and diagrams with a serious game in introductory physics
Mathematical reasoning with algebraic and graphical representations is
essential for success in physics courses. Many problems require students to
fluently move between algebraic and graphical representations. We developed a
freely available serious game to challenge the representational fluency of
introductory students regarding vector fields. Within the game, interactive
puzzles are solved using different types of vector fields that must be
configured with the correct mathematical parameters. A reward system
implemented in the game prevents from using trial-and-error approaches and
instead encourages the player to establish a mental connection between the
graphical representation of the vector field and the (algebraic) equation
before taking any action. For correct solutions, the player receives points and
can unlock further levels. We report about the aim of the game from an
educational perspective, describe potential learning scenarios and reflect
about a first attempt to use the game in the classroom

Instrument-mounted displays for reducing cognitive load during surgical navigation
Purpose Surgical navigation systems rely on a monitor placed in the operating room to relay information. Optimal monitor placement can be challenging in crowded rooms, and it is often not possible to place the monitor directly beside the situs. The operator must split attention between the navigation system and the situs. We present an approach for needle-based interventions to provide navigational feedback directly on the instrument and close to the situs by mounting a small display onto the needle. Methods By mounting a small and lightweight smartwatch display directly onto the instrument, we are able to provide navigational guidance close to the situs and directly in the operator’s field of view, thereby reducing the need to switch the focus of view between the situs and the navigation system. We devise a specific variant of the established crosshair metaphor suitable for the very limited screen space. We conduct an empirical user study comparing our approach to using a monitor and a combination of both. Results Results from the empirical user study show significant benefits for cognitive load, user preference, and general usability for the instrument-mounted display, while achieving the same level of performance in terms of time and accuracy compared to using a monitor. Conclusion We successfully demonstrate the feasibility of our approach and potential benefits. With ongoing technological advancements, instrument-mounted displays might complement standard monitor setups for surgical navigation in order to lower cognitive demands and for improved usability of such systems
Radiative Kaon Decays and the Penguin Contribution to the Delta I = 1/2 Rule
A consistent census of penguins in the Delta I = 1/2 rule is taken from the
eta0 pole contribution to the radiative KL to gamma gamma, KS to pi0 gamma
gamma and K+ to pi+ gamma gamma decay modes. We briefly comment on its impact
for KL to pi0 pi0 gamma gamma, KL to pi+ pi- gamma and check its compatibility
with the KL - KS mass difference and the CP violating epsilon-prime / epsilon
parameter.Comment: 37 pages, 16 figure
PKCδ Sensitizes Neuroblastoma Cells to L-Buthionine-Sulfoximine and Etoposide Inducing Reactive Oxygen Species Overproduction and DNA Damage
Neuroblastoma is a type of pediatric cancer. The sensitivity of neuroblastoma (NB) cancer cells to chemotherapy and radiation is inhibited by the presence of antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), which is crucial in counteracting the endogenous production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We have previously demonstrated that cells depleted of GSH undergo apoptosis via oxidative stress and Protein kinase C (PKC) δ activation. In the present study, we transfected PKCδ in NB cells resistant to oxidative death induced by L-buthionine-S,R-sulfoximine (BSO), a GSH-depleting agent. Cell responses, in terms of ROS production, apoptosis and DNA damage were evaluated. Moreover, PKCδ activation was monitored by analyzing the phosphorylation status of threonine 505 residue, carrying out PKC activity assay and investigating the subcellular localization of the kinase. The cell responses obtained in BSO-resistant cells were also compared with those obtained in BSO-sensitive cells subjected to the same experimental protocol. Our results demonstrate, for the first time, that PKCδ induces DNA oxidation and ROS overproduction leading to apoptosis of BSO-resistant NB cells and potentiates the cytotoxic effects induced by BSO in sensitive cells. Moreover, PKCδ overexpression enhances the sensitivity of NB cells to etoposide, a well-characterised drug, commonly used in neuroblastoma therapy. Altogether our data provide evidence of a pro-oxidant role of PKCδ that might be exploited to design new therapeutic strategies aimed at selective killing of cancer cells and overcoming drug resistance. However, it becomes evident that a more detailed understanding of ROS-mediated signaling in cancer cells is necessary for the development of redox-modulated therapeutic approaches
