Abstract

Background

Liposarcoma is the most frequent histopathological variety of the retroperitoneum, surgery is the gold standard for treatment.

Case presentation

We present the case of a 24-year-old male who was diagnosed with a giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma. The patient received palliative treatment due to non-resectability on the basis of chemotherapy. We decided to perform surgery after no benefit was received with systemic treatment. Complete macroscopic resection of the tumor was performed, without multi-organ resection. The patient is currently alive and disease free at 14 months of evolution.

Conclusion

Retroperitoneal liposarcomas represent a unique situation and require a more aggressive surgical approach including multiple resections for recurrences. Based on the ability of the patient to tolerate the procedure, surgery is suggested to evaluate resectability of the tumor. We must take into consideration whether prolonged survival will be attained and tumor removal will result in palliation of symptoms.</p

Control of dissipation in superconducting films by magnetic stray fields

    Get PDF
Hybrid superconducting/magnetic nanostructures on Si substrates have been built with identical physical dimensions but different magnetic configurations. By constructing arrays based on Co-dots with in-plane, out-of-plane, and vortex state magnetic configurations, the stray fields are systematically tuned. Dissipation in the mixed state of superconductors can be decreased (increased) by several orders of magnitude by decreasing (increasing) the stray magnetic fields. Furthermore, ordering of the stray fields over the entire array helps to suppress dissipation and enhance commensurability effects increasing the number of dissipation minima

    Get PDF

Introduction: Symptoms of anxiety and depression are some of the major mental health problems in caregivers affecting quality of life. Valid and reliable screening instruments such as the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) has made possible the detection of possible cases of depression and anxiety. However, the psychometric properties of this instrument have not been documented in caregivers in the Mexican population. Objetives: Determine the psychometric properties of the HADS in a sample of caregivers in the Mexican population. Materials and Methods: 200 caregivers from the National Cancer Institute participated, of which 65.5% were women and 34.5% men, with a mean age of 47.4 ± 14.1 years. Participants completed concurrently the HADS and Zarit Burden Interview. Results: A factor analysis to two factors explained 42.05% of the variance with 14 items on two factors. The internal consistency of the overall scale was satisfactory (α=0.83). Cronbach’s alphas for each subscale were .78 and .82. The concurrent validity assessed by way of correlations with concurrent measures showed significant associations (Pearson r=0.41-0.64, p<0.05). Conclusions: The HADS has adequate construct validity, internal consistency and concurrent validity for use in caregivers of cancer patients from the Mexican population. The relevance of the results is that this is a population that can require mental health care in stages of care for patients with cancer.

This paper makes use of a smartphone's ambient light sensor to analyse a system of two coupled springs undergoing either simple or damped oscillatory motion. The period, frequency and stiffness of the spring, together with the damping constant and extinction time, are extracted from light intensity curves obtained using a free Android application. The results demonstrate the instructional value of mobile phone sensors as a tool in the physics laboratory. The authors would like to thank the Institute of Education Sciences, Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (Spain) for the support of the Teaching Innovation Groups, e-MACAFI and MoMa.Sans Tresserras, JÁ.; Manjón Herrera, FJ.; Pereira, A.; Gómez-Tejedor, JA.; Monsoriu Soriano, JC. General overview of sworn translators and interpreters in Colombia

    Get PDF
This paper shows an overview of sworn translators and interpreters in Colombia. In that sense, we want to know what the social, professional and legal status of such translators and interpreters is in order to work in this country. To do so, we draw upon the partial results of the research project called “El estatus social y legal del traductor en Colombia” (“The social and legal status of the translator in Colombia”), by Quiroz, Gómez, Lainez, Zuluaga & Ortiz (2011). Information was obtained by means of a survey conducted on 132 Colombian translators (or foreign translators living in Colombia), from which responses of 38 translators involved in legal translation were extracted. Similarly, data from the Examination Board for Sworn Translators and Interpreters (ETIO), at the University of Antioquia, and from the National Directory of Sworn Translators and Interpreters (at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) are shown. A brief review and analysis of the Colombian law regarding sworn translation is also included. For this discussion, authors from regions different to Colombia have been reviewed, since the subject under study has never been discussed from an academic perspective in Colombia. To finish, we present some conclusions from the analysis and reviews above

Breaking the configurational anisotropy in Fe single crystal nanomagnets

    Get PDF
In this work, we improve the ability to tailor the switching mechanism in nanomagnets by introducing an additional, highly controlled source of anisotropy: magnetocrystalline anisotropy. We analyze the vortex dynamics in single crystal Fe nanotriangles with different orientations of the crystalline axes. By experimental studies and simulation, we show that the angular dependence of the vortex annihilation field springs from the convolution of the crystalline and configurational anisotropies. In contrast, the remanence and the nucleation field present a much simpler behavior controlled by the existence of a single symmetry axis when shape and crystalline orientation are taken into account

An Open-Source Proactive Security Infrastructure for Business Process Management

    Get PDF
Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) have emerged in the IT arena as cornerstone in the automation and orchestration of complex services for organizations. These systems manage critical information that is crucial for the organizations. The potential cost and consequences of security threats could produce information loss for the reputation of organizations. Therefore, the early response regarding to the non-compliance of security requirement is a real necessity overall during the business process execution. Currently, an active response requires a human intervention with high know-how and expertise in both business process management and security. In this paper, we propose an initial work which presents an open-source proactive infrastructure for the automatic continuous monitoring and checking compliance of security requirements at runtime of business processes
