Oxygen uptake and galactose and water transfer by averted sacs of intestine of the fish Gobius paganellus have been measured at 25, 30 and 37°C. The O2 uptake increased with temperature, but it became stabilized between 30 and 37° C. The water transfer from mucosal to intestinal wall increased with temperature. A linear correlation between O, uptake and water transfer to tissue has been observed. The water transfer from mucosal to serosal decreased with temperature rises and became nil at 37 C. The active transport of galactose increased with the temperature reaching a maximum at 30º C. and started to diminish at 37-C. The absence of Na- in the incubation medium inhibited O_uptake and water transfer to tissues and to serosal side. The galactose active transport was ver strongly inhibited by the absence of Na

Effect of inhibitors on chloride-dependent transmural potential in the rectal wall of Schistocerca gregaria

Previous experiments in vitro revealed a transmural potential difference (PD) and a shortcircuit current (IX) across the rectal wall of Schistocerca yregariu. which were dependent on chloride ions in lumen. The present report shows that anoxia. dinitrophenol and cyanide inhibit DP and IX. proving that the required energy derives from oxidative metabolism. Acetazolamide also inhibits DP and Isc. Ouabain. when in haemocoele, has also an inhibitory effect, not ascribable to a Na’-K’ pump blocking action. It is suggested that HCO; plays an important rBle in the active transport of Cl- from lumen to haemocoele and that ouabain may in some way inhibit chloride pumping

Rectum trammural potential (PD) and short-circuit current (Isc) of the desert locust, Schistocercu gregaria, have been studied in vitro, with everted rectal wall preparations in solutions of different ionic composition. Initially, a PD of about 35 mV (lumen positive) and a Isc of about 300 4 cm-* were recorded. Omission of sodium or potassium (Tris as substitute), from the luminal side or from both sides led to an increase of 4 to 6 mV in PD (lumen more positive) together with an increase in IBC. In the absence of chloride alone (sulphate as substitute) the PD quickly dropped to nearly zero. In each case the control values were recovered on replacing the corresponding ions. Neither the PD nor the IW changed when substitutions affected only the haemocoelic solution. These findings corroborate the assumption that active transport of chloride ions from lumen to haemolymph is the major factor for transmural PD and account for the short-circuit current in the rectal wall of desert locust. A working scheme is given to explain the influence of sodium, potassium, and chloride ions on the PD

Safinamide in Clinical Practice: A Spanish Multicenter Cohort Study

Background: Safinamide is an approved drug for the treatment of motor fluctuations of Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients with a potential benefit on non-motor symptoms (NMS). Methods: A retrospective multicenter cohort study was conducted, in which the clinical effect of safinamide on both motor and NMS was assessed by the Clinical Global Impression of Change scale. Furthermore, we assessed the appearance of adverse events (AEs) and its effect on dyskinesia, that were also recorded in non-fluctuating PD patients and in those previously treated with rasagiline. Results: We included 213 PD patients who received safinamide in addition to their regular levodopa therapy. Thirty-five withdrew prematurely from safinamide, mainly because of AEs. Out of 178, clinical improvement on motor and NMS was found in 76.4% and 26.2%, respectively. A total of 44 reported AEs of mild intensity. We did not find a difference concerning the clinical benefit or AEs when comparing either patients who had or had not been taking Monoamine Oxidase B Inhibitor (MAOB-I) previously or between patients with and without motor complications. Conclusions: Safinamide is an effective and safe add-on to levodopa drug for PD patients. Moreover, safinamide could elicit an additional clinical improvement in PD patients previously treated with other MAOB-I and in non- fluctuating patients with suboptimal motor control

Effect of bicarbonate on chloride-dependent transmural potential and ATPase activity in the rectal wall of Schistocerca gregaria

    Get PDF
An activating effect of bicarbonate on the active transport of Cl- across the rectal wall of Schistocerca gregario has been found, as revealed by an increase of the transmural potential and short-circuit current. Acetazolamide, an inhibitor of both parameters, does not show this inhibitory effect, even at much higher concentrations, when added in the presence of bicarbonate. A Cl- or S O , anion dependent ATPase, different from the Na+, K+ ATPase, has also been Cound, which can be further stimulated by bicarbonate

Multi-agent simulation of hydraulic transient equations in pressurized systems

Computational modeling pervades virtually every industrial process. By using numerical representations of the behavior of elements that constitute a system it is possible to obtain efficient and safe designs. Moreover, system operation can be better defined by using such models, thus enabling greater reliability and control. In this paper the use of agents to solve the equations describing fast transients in water networks is investigated. As the simulation of hydraulic transients in pressurized systems is a naturally distributed problem, the authors argue that a multi-agent based system is very suitable for the solution of this complex engineering phenomenon. A hybrid solution is built by deploying agents to work with sets of equations describing hydraulic transient behavior in pipeline systems. The details necessary to assemble a complete and lubricated machine to model the complex phenomenon of hydraulic transients in pressurized systems are described. This research develops a platform that constitutes an efficient and versatile tool of great interest for water supply managers when analyzing water hammer effects in their networks.Izquierdo Sebastián, J.; Montalvo Arango, I.; Pérez García, R.; Ayala Cabrera, D. On parallel Branch and Bound frameworks for Global Optimization

    Get PDF
Branch and Bound (B&B) algorithms are known to exhibit an irregularity of the search tree. Therefore, developing a parallel approach for this kind of algorithms is a challenge. The efficiency of a B&B algorithm depends on the chosen Branching, Bounding, Selection, Rejection, and Termination rules. The question we investigate is how the chosen platform consisting of programming language, used libraries, or skeletons influences programming effort and algorithm performance. Selection rule and data management structures are usually hidden to programmers for frameworks with a high level of abstraction, as well as the load balancing strategy, when the algorithm is run in parallel. We investigate the question by implementing a multidimensional Global Optimization B&B algorithm with the help of three frameworks with a different level of abstraction (from more to less): Bobpp, Threading Building Blocks (TBB), and a customized Pthread implementation. The following has been found. The Bobpp implementation is easy to code, but exhibits the poorest scalability. On the contrast, the TBB and Pthread implementations scale almost linearly on the used platform. The TBB approach shows a slightly better productivity
