    Flexible Parametrization of Generalized Parton Distributions: The Chiral-Odd Sector

    We present a physically motivated parameterization of the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions. The parametrization is an extension of our previous one in the chiral-even sector which was based on the reggeized diquark model. While for chiral even generalized distributions a quantitative fit with uncertainty estimation can be performed using deep inelastic scattering data, nucleon electromagnetic, axial and pseudoscalar form factors measurements, and all available deeply virtual Compton scattering data, the chiral-odd sector is far less constrained. While awaiting the analysis of measurements on pseudoscalar mesons exclusive electroproduction which are key for the extraction of chiral odd GPDs, we worked out a connection between the chiral-even and chiral-odd reduced helicity amplitudes using Parity transformations. The connection works for a class of models including two-components models. This relation allows us to estimate the size of the various chiral odd contributions and it opens the way for future quantitative fits.Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures, text changes, corrected typos, added fig.

    Probing the Circumnuclear Stellar Populations of Starburst Galaxies in the Near-infrared

    We employ the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility's near-infrared spectrograph SpeX at 0.8-2.4μ\mum to investigate the spatial distribution of the stellar populations (SPs) in four well known Starburst galaxies: NGC34, NGC1614, NGC3310 and NGC7714. We use the STARLIGHT code updated with the synthetic simple stellar populations models computed by Maraston (2005, M05). Our main results are that the NIR light in the nuclear surroundings of the galaxies is dominated by young/intermediate age SPs (t2×109t \leq 2\times10^9yr), summing from \sim40\% up to 100\% of the light contribution. In the nuclear aperture of two sources (NGC1614 and NGC3310) we detected a predominant old SP component (t>2×109t > 2\times10^9yr), while for NGC34 and NGC7714 the younger component prevails. Furthermore, we found evidence of a circumnuclear star formation ring-like structure and a secondary nucleus in NGC1614, in agreement with previous studies. We also suggest that the merger/interaction experienced by three of the galaxies studied, NGC1614, NGC3310 and NGC7714 can explain the lower metallicity values derived for the young SP component of these sources. In this scenario the fresh unprocessed metal poorer gas from the destroyed/interacting companion galaxy is driven to the centre of the galaxies and mixed with the central region gas, before star formation takes place. In order to deepen our analysis, we performed the same procedure of SP synthesis using Maraston (2011, M11) EPS models. Our results show that the newer and higher resolution M11 models tend to enhance the old/intermediate age SP contribution over the younger ages

    Locality and topology with fat link overlap actions

    We study the locality and topological properties of fat link clover overlap (FCO) actions. We find that a small amount of fattening (2-4 steps of APE or 1 step of HYP) already results in greatly improved properties compared to the Wilson overlap (WO). We present a detailed study of the localisation of the FCO and its connection to the density of low modes of AAA^\dagger A. In contrast to the Wilson overlap, on quenched gauge backgrounds we do not find any dependence of the localization of the FCO on the gauge coupling. This suggests that the FCO remains local in the continuum limit. The FCO also faithfully reproduces the zero mode wave functions of typical lattice instantons, not like the Wilson overlap. After a general discussion of different lattice definitions of the topological charge we also show that the FCO together with the Boulder charge are likely to satisfy the index theorem in the continuum limit. Finally, we present a high statistics computation of the quenched topological susceptibility with the FCO action.Comment: 19 pages, LaTe

    Flexible parametrization of generalized parton distributions from deeply virtual Compton scattering observables

    We present a physically motivated parametrization of the chiral-even generalized parton distributions in the non-singlet sector obtained from a global analysis using a set of available experimental data. Our analysis is valid in the kinematical region of intermediate Bjorken xx and for Q2Q^2 in the multi-GeV region which is accessible at present and currently planned facilities. Relevant data included in our fit are from the nucleon elastic form factors measurements, from deep inelastic scattering experiments. Additional information provided by lattice calculations of the higher moments of generalized parton distributions, is also considered. Recently extracted observables from Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering on the nucleon are reproduced by our fit.Comment: 25 pages, 21 figure

    Ecology of Urban Bees: A Review of Current Knowledge and Directions for Future Study

    Urban bee ecology is an emerging field that holds promise for advancing knowledge of bee community dynamics and promoting bee conservation. Published studies of bee communities in urban and suburban habitats are fewer than those documenting bees in agricultural and wildland settings. As land lost to urbanization is predicted to increase in coming years the necessity of studying urban bee populations is growing. We reviewed 59 publications on urban bee ecology with the following goals, to assess current knowledge, to highlight areas in need of further research, and to suggest applications of study findings to bee conservation. Methodological variation between studies was discussed in the context of data interpretation. Identified trends in urban areas included the following, negative correlation between bee species richness and urban development, cavity-nesters increase in abundance in urban habitats, and floral specialists are scarce. Future directions for studying urban bee ecology include incorporation of landscape-scale assessments, conducting manipulative experiments and actively designing urban bee habitats. We include descriptions of plant and habitat management techniques derived from our research in northern and southern California urban habitats to promote development of bee-friendly habitats

    Na I and Hα\alpha absorption features in the atmosphere of MASCARA-2b/KELT-20b

    We have used the HARPS-North high resolution spectrograph (R\mathcal{R}=115 000) at TNG to observe one transit of the highly irradiated planet MASCARA-2b/KELT-20b. Using only one transit observation, we are able to clearly resolve the spectral features of the atomic sodium (Na I) doublet and the Hα\alpha line in its atmosphere, measuring absorption depths of 0.17±\pm0.03%\% and 0.59±\pm0.08%\% for a 0.75 A˚\AA passband, respectively. These absorptions are corroborated with the transmission measured from their respective transmission light curves, which show a large Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. In case of Hα\alpha, this absorption corresponds to an effective radius of Rλ/RPR_{\lambda}/R_P=1.20±\pm0.04. While the S/N of the final transmission spectrum is not sufficient to adjust different temperature profiles to the lines, we find that higher temperatures than the equilibrium are needed to explain the lines contrast. Particularly, we find that the Na I lines core require a temperature of T=4210±\pm180K and that Hα\alpha requires T=4330±\pm520K. MASCARA-2b, like other planets orbiting A-type stars, receives a large amount of UV energy from its host star. This energy excites the atomic hydrogen and produces Hα\alpha absorption, leading to the expansion and abrasion of the atmosphere. The study of other Balmer lines in the transmission spectrum would allow the determination of the atmospheric temperature profile and the calculation of the lifetime of the atmosphere. In the case of MASCARA-2b, residual features are observed in the Hβ\beta and Hγ\gamma lines, but they are not statistically significant. More transit observations are needed to confirm our findings in Na I and Hα\alpha, and to build up enough S/N to explore the presence of Hβ\beta and Hγ\gamma planetary absorptions.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure
