XINACHTLI: EXPLORING THE EXPERIENCES OF YOUNG RESILIENT LATINAS IN A RURAL AND UNDER-RESOURCED COMMUNITY
This interpretive phenomenology study aimed to explore the lived experiences of young Latinas in a rural and under-resourced community. The analysis of the messages received by young women in educational institutions, at home, and in science and math classes was necessary due to the underrepresentation of Latinas in STEM fields. Using an interpretive phenomenology lens, the researcher collected journals from seven participants. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with all seven participants every week for 16 weeks by the Xinachtli facilitator. The data collected from the journals were transcribed in a line-by-line analysis and affirmed using qualitative analysis. The codes were studied to determine how they connected to the research questions. An exit survey was completed by the seven participants, and this helped determine the most important elements of the Xinachtli program. The resulting data showed that: (1) Latinas navigate being labeled and silenced at school through resistance, despite this survival mechanism going against the gender socialization of their culture; (2) the relationships maintained between the participants and their families were complex, and this complexity was especially significant when it came to the relationships the participants held with their mothers; (3) rural and under-resourced schools experience shortages of qualified educators, which resulted in a lack of relatedness to science and math courses, limiting opportunities to prepare for college; (4) Xinachtli provided the young Latinas opportunities to develop relationships with positive women role models, led to zero acts of violence during the 16 weeks, and improved self-regulation, (5) programs like Xinachtli are essential in developing young women’s mindfulness, self-regulation, and self-efficacy. Holistic practices allow students to be seen, heard, and their realities acknowledged
Thermal Development of a Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) Camera for Exploration Upper Stage (EUS)
NASAs Flight Imagery Launch Monitoring Real-time System (FILMRS) cameras were originally developed for the Space Launch System (SLS) Core Stage. These Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) cameras have been redesigned and reduced by an order of magnitude in size for the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS). The change in thermal environment has led to the application of various passive thermal control methods and the addition of a heater option. This paper will give a summary of the design and development test effort associated with adapting the COTS camera for the demands of the space environment and associated thermal mitigations applied as the project prepares to complete the design. The application of this camera for other space systems is discussed

A Randomized Controlled Trial of Device Guided, Slow-Paced Respiration in Women with Overactive Bladder Syndrome.
PurposeWe evaluated the effects of device guided, slow-paced respiration on urgency associated urinary symptoms, perceived stress and anxiety, and autonomic function in women with overactive bladder syndrome.Materials and methodsWe performed a randomized, parallel group trial of slow-paced respiration to improve perceived stress and autonomic dysfunction as potential contributors to overactive bladder. Ambulatory women who reported at least 3 voiding or incontinence episodes per day associated with moderate to severe urgency were randomized to use a portable biofeedback device to practice daily, slow, guided breathing exercises or a control device which appeared identical and was reprogrammed to play music without guiding breathing. During 12 weeks we evaluated changes in urinary symptoms by voiding diaries, perceived stress and anxiety by validated questionnaires, and autonomic function by heart rate variability and impedance cardiography.ResultsIn the 161 randomized participants, including 79 randomized to paced respiration and 82 randomized to the control group, the average ± SD baseline frequency of voiding or incontinence associated with moderate to severe urgency was 6.9 ± 3.4 episodes per day. Compared to controls the participants randomized to paced respiration demonstrated greater improvement in perceived stress (average Perceived Stress Scale score decrease 2.8 vs 1.1, p=0.03) but not in autonomic function markers. During 12 weeks the average frequency of voiding or incontinence associated with moderate to severe urgency, which was the study primary outcome, decreased by a mean of 0.9 ± 3.2 episodes per day but no significant between group difference was detected.ConclusionsAmong women with overactive bladder slow-paced respiration was associated with a modest improvement in perceived stress during 12 weeks. However, it was not superior to a music listening control for reducing urinary symptoms or changing autonomic function
Longitudinal variability of size-fractionated N-2 fixation and DON release rates along 24.5 degrees N in the subtropical North Atlantic
Dinitrogen (N-2) fixation and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) release rates were measured on fractionated samples (\u3e10 mu m and m) along 24.5 degrees N in the subtropical North Atlantic. Net N-2 fixation rates (N-2 assimilation into biomass) ranged from 0.01 to 0.4 nmol N L-1 h(-1), and DON release rates ranged from 0.001 to 0.09 nmol N L-1 h(-1). DON release represented approximate to 14% and approximate to 23% of \u3e10 mu m and (assimilation into biomass plus DON release), respectively. This implies that by overlooking DON release, N-2 fixation rates are underestimated. Net N-2 fixation rates were higher in the east and decreased significantly toward the west (r(s)=-0.487, p=0.002, and r(s)=-0.496, p=0.001, for the \u3e10 mu m and fractions, respectively). The sum of both fractions correlated with aerosol optical depth at 550 nm (AOD 550 nm) (r(s)=0.382, p=0.017) and phosphate (PO43-) concentrations (r(s)=0.453, p=0.018), suggesting an enhancement of diazotrophy as a response to aerosol inputs and phosphorus availability. In contrast, DON release was constant among size fractions and did not correlate with any of these variables. We also compared N-2 fixation rates obtained using the N-15(2) dissolved and bubble methods. The first gave average rates 50% (49% 39) higher than the latter, which supports the finding that previously published N-2 fixation rates are likely underestimated. We suggest that by combining N-2 fixation and DON release measurements using dissolved N-15(2), global N-2 fixation rates could increase enough to balance oceanic fixed nitrogen budget disequilibria
Development of NASA's Sample Cartridge Assembly: Summary of GEDS Design, Development Testing, and Thermal Analyses
NASA's Sample Cartridge Assembly (SCA) project is responsible for designing and validating a payload that contains materials research samples in a sealed environment. The SCA will be heated in the European Space Agency's (ESA) Low Gradient Furnace (LGF) that is housed inside the Material Science Research Rack (MSRR) located on the International Space Station (ISS). The first Principle Investigator (PI) to utilize the SCA will focus on Gravitational Effects on Distortion in Sintering (GEDS) research. This paper will give a summary of the design and development test effort for the GEDS SCA and will discuss the role of thermal analysis in developing test profiles to meet the science and engineering requirements. Lessons learned will be reviewed and salient design features that may differ for each PI will be discussed
Collaborative Agency in Youth Online and Offline Creative Production in Scratch
Few studies have focused on how youth develop agency to organize and participate in online unstructured creative collaborations. This paper describes and analyzes how youth programmers organized collaborative groups in response to a programming “Collab Challenge” in the Scratch Online Community and in an accompanying workshop with high school students. The analyses focused on modalities of online collaborations, determined the breadth of online participation, and examined local teens’ awareness of the online community. The discussion addresses youth’s collaborative agency in these new networked contexts, studied the role that online social awareness plays in completing tasks and makes recommendations for the support of online programming communities
Evaluation of a three-hour cross disciplinary internship site supervisor training session
Given the importance of supervision in the counseling fields for facilitating trainee growth, the frequency, type, and delivery of supervision varies widely and can be limited or nonexistent (Pearson, 2004). Thus, a supervisor in any counseling profession must have strong supervisory skills that match the needs of the trainee, even if their professional skills and background differ (Davies et al., 2004). This study examined the effectiveness of a professional development training for school counseling, rehabilitation counseling and school psychology site supervisors. Results demonstrated significant improvements in participant confidence in Managing Supervision as well as general improvements in self-reported self-efficacy. Future directions for supporting the ongoing professional development of supervisors is discussed

Randomized Trial of Tenecteplase or Placebo with Low Molecular Weight Heparin for Acute Submassive Pulmonary Embolism: Assessment of Patient-Oriented Cardiopulmonary Outcomes at Three Months
Background: Acute submassive pulmonary embolism (PE) with right ventricular (RV) injury and/or concomitant deep venous thrombosis can cause persistent symptoms that degrade quality of life. We tested the hypothesis that intravenous tenecteplase would improve the probability of a favorable outcome at three months after submassive PE. Methods: Multicenter randomized double-blind, placebo controlled trial. Eligible patients were ambulatory at baseline, had image-proven acute PE, a systolic blood pressure > 90 mm Hg and RV dysfunction (abnormal echocardiography, troponin or brain natriuretic peptide). Patients received anticoagulation with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and either tiered-dose tenecteplase or saline in an opaque syringe. Composite favorable outcome: 5 day survival to hospital discharge without shock, intubation, or major hemorrhage (any intracranial bleed or need for surgical or medical intervention for acute anemia), and at 90 days, normal RV on resting echocardiography, 6 minute walk distance>330 m, no dyspnea at rest, and no recurrent PE or DVT. Self-perception of wellness was assessed by the SF-16, VEINES-QOL and rank on 1-10 ordinal scale. Results: 83 patients were enrolled, including 33 women, 52 Caucasians, mean age 55+/-14 years, 43 received placebo, 40 received tenecteplase, and 38 had concomittant DVT. A favorable composite outcome occurred in 17/43(40%, 95% CI: 25-56%) treated with placebo, versus 26/40 (65%, 95% CI: 48-79%) treated with tenecteplase, p=0.02 Fisher’s exact. Acute deterioration occurred in 3 patients treated with placebo: fatal PE (1), intubation (1), thrombectomy (1) and in one patient treated with tenecteplase who had a fatal intracranial hemorrhage. At three months, a nonfavorable outcome was found in 23 additional patients treated with placebo, versus 13 patients treated with tenecteplase. Assessments of wellness were consistently higher in the tenecteplase group (e.g., p=0.03 for ordinal scale rank). Conclusions: In this randomized trial, patients with submassive PE treated with LMWH and tenecteplase were more likely to have a favorable patient-oriented outcome at three months than patients treated with LMWH and saline placebo
