The 'who' and 'what' of #diabetes on Twitter
Social media are being increasingly used for health promotion, yet the
landscape of users, messages and interactions in such fora is poorly
understood. Studies of social media and diabetes have focused mostly on
patients, or public agencies addressing it, but have not looked broadly at all
the participants or the diversity of content they contribute. We study Twitter
conversations about diabetes through the systematic analysis of 2.5 million
tweets collected over 8 months and the interactions between their authors. We
address three questions: (1) what themes arise in these tweets?, (2) who are
the most influential users?, (3) which type of users contribute to which
themes? We answer these questions using a mixed-methods approach, integrating
techniques from anthropology, network science and information retrieval such as
thematic coding, temporal network analysis, and community and topic detection.
Diabetes-related tweets fall within broad thematic groups: health information,
news, social interaction, and commercial. At the same time, humorous messages
and references to popular culture appear consistently, more than any other type
of tweet. We classify authors according to their temporal 'hub' and 'authority'
scores. Whereas the hub landscape is diffuse and fluid over time, top
authorities are highly persistent across time and comprise bloggers, advocacy
groups and NGOs related to diabetes, as well as for-profit entities without
specific diabetes expertise. Top authorities fall into seven interest
communities as derived from their Twitter follower network. Our findings have
implications for public health professionals and policy makers who seek to use
social media as an engagement tool and to inform policy design.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables. Supplemental spreadsheet available

Application of photoluminescence and electroluminescence techniques to the characterization of intermediate band solar cells
The intermediatebandsolarcell (IBSC) is a photovoltaic device with a theoretical conversion efficiency limit of 63.2%. In recent years many attempts have been made to fabricate an intermediateband material which behaves as the theory states. One characteristic feature of an IBSC is its luminescence spectrum. In this work the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) spectra of InAs/GaAs QD-IBSCs together with their reference cell have been studied. It is shown that EL measurements provide more reliable information about the behaviour of the IB material inside the IBSC structure than PL measurements. At low temperatures, the EL spectra are consistent with the quasi-Fermi level splits described by the IBSC model, whereas at room temperature they are not. This result is in agreement with previously reported analysis of the quantum efficiency of the solarcell
On fitting the Pareto-Levy distribution to stock market index data: selecting a suitable cutoff value
The so-called Pareto-Levy or power-law distribution has been successfully
used as a model to describe probabilities associated to extreme variations of
worldwide stock markets indexes data and it has the form from
empirical data and consequently, the determination of the exponent alpha, is
often is done by using a simple graphical method based on a log-log scale,
where a power-law probability plot shows a straight line with slope equal to
the exponent of the power-law distribution. This procedure can be considered
subjective, particularly with regard to the choice of the threshold or cutoff
parameter gamma. In this work is presented a more objective procedure, based on
a statistical measure of discrepancy between the empirical and the Pareto-Levy
distribution. The technique is illustrated for data sets from the New York
Stock Exchange Index and the Mexican Stock Market Index (IPC).Comment: Econophysics paper. 5 pages 9 figure

Damage Spreading During Domain Growth
We study damage spreading in models of two-dimensional systems undergoing
first order phase transitions. We consider several models from the same
non-conserved order parameter universality class, and find unexpected
differences between them. An exact solution of the Ohta-Jasnow-Kawasaki model
yields the damage growth law , where in
dimensions. In contrast, time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations and Ising
simulations in using heat-bath dynamics show power-law growth, but with
an exponent of approximately , independent of the system sizes studied.
In marked contrast, Metropolis dynamics shows damage growing via , although the damage difference grows as . PACS: 64.60.-i, 05.50.+qComment: 4 pags of revtex3 + 3 postscript files appended as a compressed and

Understanding the operation of quantum dot intermediate band solar cells
In this paper, a model for intermediate band solar cells is built based on the generally understood physical concepts ruling semiconductor device operation, with special emphasis on the behavior at low temperature. The model is compared to JL-VOC measurements at concentrations up to about 1000 suns and at temperatures down to 20 K, as well as measurements of the radiative recombination obtained from electroluminescence. The agreement is reasonable. It is found that the main reason for the reduction of open circuit voltage is an operational reduction of the bandgap, but this effect disappears at high concentrations or at low temperatures
Assessment of the capabilities and applicability of ionospheric perturbation indices provided in Europe
© 2020. This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Perturbations in the ionosphere are of great interest not only for scientific research, but also for applications using transionospheric radiosignals (e.g. GNSS applications and HF communication), because the transmission of radiosignals is sensitive to the electron density in the ionosphere. However, ionospheric perturbations have manifold character. Their spatial range can vary between global and very local effects (a few hundreds of km range) and their temporal range varies between seconds and days. All these perturbations have different physical background and different impact on applications. Many ionosphere perturbation indices that characterize the state of ionospheric perturbations have been introduced in the past (e.g. ROTI, S4, , AATR, Reff, W-index, SISTED, SOLERA, DIXSG, IBI, Dfu/Dfl, etc.). This manuscript is an assessment of a subset of diverse ionospheric indices developed and/or applied in Europe. It describes the objectives of the indices, demonstrates their character in a case study for September 2017, indicates their applicability for different use cases in science and industry and guides users to find the appropriate index for their purposes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
