A bifibrational reconstruction of Lawvere's presheaf hyperdoctrine
Combining insights from the study of type refinement systems and of monoidal
closed chiralities, we show how to reconstruct Lawvere's hyperdoctrine of
presheaves using a full and faithful embedding into a monoidal closed
bifibration living now over the compact closed category of small categories and
distributors. Besides revealing dualities which are not immediately apparent in
the traditional presentation of the presheaf hyperdoctrine, this reconstruction
leads us to an axiomatic treatment of directed equality predicates (modelled by
hom presheaves), realizing a vision initially set out by Lawvere (1970). It
also leads to a simple calculus of string diagrams (representing presheaves)
that is highly reminiscent of C. S. Peirce's existential graphs for predicate
logic, refining an earlier interpretation of existential graphs in terms of
Boolean hyperdoctrines by Brady and Trimble. Finally, we illustrate how this
work extends to a bifibrational setting a number of fundamental ideas of linear
logic.Comment: Identical to the final version of the paper as appears in proceedings

Rett Syndrome is a neurological impairment with a typically long C scoliosis curve that often require surgery. In this study it has been reviewed 11 patients with Rett syndrome and spine deformity. We analyzed the magnitudes of the curves with Cobb angle, sagittal plane (kyphosis and lordosis), preoperative and postoperative pelvic obliquity, fusion levels and postoperative complications. The average correction was 65%. Posterior fusion was performed in all patients excluding sacrum pelvis. The assemblies are made mainly with the hybrid system of screws, hooks, clips and cables TRANSPINE®. Neuromuscular scoliosis, such as Rett syndrome, which needs correction, can be controlled safely and effectively by posterior fusion with hybrid constructs
The Early Bird Catches The Term: Combining Twitter and News Data For Event Detection and Situational Awareness
Twitter updates now represent an enormous stream of information originating
from a wide variety of formal and informal sources, much of which is relevant
to real-world events. In this paper we adapt existing bio-surveillance
algorithms to detect localised spikes in Twitter activity corresponding to real
events with a high level of confidence. We then develop a methodology to
automatically summarise these events, both by providing the tweets which fully
describe the event and by linking to highly relevant news articles. We apply
our methods to outbreaks of illness and events strongly affecting sentiment. In
both case studies we are able to detect events verifiable by third party
sources and produce high quality summaries
Convergence calls: multimedia storytelling at British news websites
This article uses qualitative interviews with senior editors and managers from a selection of the UK's national online news providers to describe and analyse their current experimentation with multimedia and video storytelling. The results show that, in a period of declining newspaper readership and TV news viewing, editors are keen to embrace new technologies, which are seen as being part of the future of news. At the same time, text is still reported to be the cornerstone for news websites, leading to changes in the grammar and function of news video when used online. The economic rationale for convergence is examined and the article investigates the partnerships sites have entered into in order to be able to serve their audience with video content. In-house video is complementing syndicated content, and the authors examine the resulting developments in newsroom training and recruitment practices. The article provides journalism and interactive media scholars with case studies on the changes taking place in newsrooms as a result of the shift towards multimedia, multiplatform news consumption
THE ACCUSED IS ENTERING THE COURTROOM: THE LIVE-TWEETING OF A MURDER TRIAL.
© 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis GroupThe use of social media is now widely accepted within journalism as an outlet for news information. Live tweeting of unfolding events is standard practice. In March 2014, Oscar Pistorius went on trial in the Gauteng High Court for murder. Hundreds of journalists present began live-tweeting coverage, an unprecedented combination of international interest, permission to use technology and access which resulted in massive streams of consciousness reports of events as they unfolded. Based on a corpus of Twitter feeds of twenty-four journalists covering the trial, this study analyses the content and strategies of these feeds in order to present an understanding of how microblogging is used as a live reporting tool. This study shows the development of standardised language and strategies in reporting on Twitter, concluding that journalists adopt a narrow range of approaches, with no significant variation in terms of gender, location, or medium. This is in contrast to earlier studies in the field (Awad, 2006, Hedman, 2015; Kothari, 2010; Lariscy, Avery, Sweetser, & Howes, 2009 Lasorsa, 2012; Lasorsa, Lewis, & Holton, 2011; Sigal, 1999, Vis, 2013).Peer reviewe
Relationships between terrestrial gastropod distribution and soil properties in Galicia (NW Spain)
Abstract This study investigated the influence of edaphic factors on the distribution of 17 terrestrial gastropod species over a large area of the northwest Iberian Peninsula. A total of 498 gastropod/soil samples were obtained, and a total of 19 edaphic variables determined. The resulting data matrix was analysed by detrended canonical correspondence analysis (DCCA). Our results indicate that the gastropods of the study area can be grouped on two types of criteria: first, chemical criteria (notably pH, cation exchange capacity, and Al content), and secondly physical criteria (notably texture and moisture content). In view of distribution with respect to these factors, two well-defined groups can be identified: one comprising Acanthinula aculeata, Euconulus fulvus, Punctum pygmaeum, Columella aspera and Oxychilus alliarius preferring coarse-textured acid soils, the other comprising Cochlicopa lubrica, Vertigo pygmaea, Zonitoides excavatus, Carychium tridentatum, Deroceras reticulatum and Deroceras lombricoides preferring wetter, finer-textured, less acid soils. Arion intermedius and Ponentina subvirescens were in general indifferent to the edaphic factors considered
Autoantibodies against the endothelial receptor of protein C are associated with acute myocardial infarction in young women
BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is rare among young women. The search for unknown risk factors is warranted. Endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) is largely present at the endothelial surface of large arteries. No studies about association of anti-EPCR autoantibodies (anti-EPCR) with AMI are available.
METHODS: Plasma IgA, IgM and IgG anti-EPCR levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 165 women younger than 45 years who survived a first AMI and 165 healthy women, matched by age and geographical origin.
RESULTS: Using the 90th percentile of IgA anti-EPCR in the control group, IgA anti-EPCR were independently associated with AMI after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors (OR 5.1; 95% CI 1.7-15.6; P = 0.004). The risk apparently conferred by IgA anti-EPCR increased dose-dependently (P for trend =0.0002). IgM anti-EPCR were less consistently associated with AMI: a significant increase in the risk was found when women above the 90th percentile were compared with those in the lowest quartile (OR 3.6; 95% CI 1.2-11.5; P = 0.03). IgG anti-EPCR were similar in patients and controls. A total of 145 patients underwent coronary arteriography. IgA or IgM anti-EPCR were not different among patients with different degrees of atherosclerotic lesion (anova, P = 0.77 and 0.24, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS: High levels of IgA and, to a lesser extent, IgM anti-EPCR, are associated with AMI in young women
Population genomics in Rhamdia quelen (Heptapteridae, Siluriformes) reveals deep divergence and adaptation in the Neotropical region
Rhamdia quelen, a Neotropical fish with hybridization between highly divergent mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lineages, represents an interesting evolutionary model. Previous studies suggested that there might be demographic differences between coastal lagoons and riverine environments, as well as divergent populations that could be reproductively isolated. Here, we investigated the genetic diversity pattern of this taxon in the Southern Neotropical Basin system that includes the La Plata Basin, Patos-Merin lagoon basin and the coastal lagoons draining to the SW Atlantic Ocean, through a population genomics approach using 2b-RAD-sequencing-derived single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The genomic scan identified selection footprints associated with divergence and suggested local adaptation environmental drivers. Two major genomic clusters latitudinally distributed in the Northern and Southern basins were identified, along with consistent signatures of divergent selection between them. Population structure based on the whole set of loci and on the presumptive neutral vs. adaptive loci showed deep genomic divergence between the two major clusters. Annotation of the most consistent SNPs under divergent selection revealed some interesting candidate genes for further functional studies. Moreover, signals of adaptation to a coastal lagoon environment mediated by purifying selection were found. These new insights provide a better understanding of the complex evolutionary history of R. quelen in the southernmost basin of the Neotropical regio
Electroconvulsive Therapy Practice Changes in Older Individuals Due to COVID-19: Expert Consensus Statement
© 2020 American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry The ubiquitous coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has required healthcare providers across all disciplines to rapidly adapt to public health guidelines to reduce risk while maintaining quality of care. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which involves an aerosol-generating procedure from manual ventilation with a bag mask valve while under anesthesia, has undergone drastic practice changes in order to minimize disruption of treatment in the midst of COVID-19. In this paper, we provide a consensus statement on the clinical practice changes in ECT specific to older adults based on expert group discussions of ECT practitioners across the country and a systematic review of the literature. There is a universal consensus that ECT is an essential treatment of severe mental illness. In addition, there is a clear consensus on what modifications are imperative to ensure continued delivery of ECT in a manner that is safe for patients and Northwell Health, while maintaining the viability of ECT services. Approaches to modifications in ECT to address infection control, altered ECT procedures, and adjusting ECT operations are almost uniform across the globe. With modified ECT procedures, it is possible to continue to meet the needs of older patients while mitigating risk of transmission to this vulnerable population
Association of increased fibrinogen concentration with impaired activation of anticoagulant protein C
BACKGROUND: Low levels of activated protein C (APC) are a risk factor for venous thrombosis. The mechanisms leading to interindividual differences in APC are not totally elucidated. Protein C is activated by the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex. As thrombin binds to fibrinogen and thrombomodulin through a common region, it is conceivable that fibrinogen influences the activation of protein C. This would help to explain the association between high levels of fibrinogen and an increased thrombotic risk.
METHODS: We analyzed the association between circulating APC levels and fibrinogen concentration in 382 healthy subjects. Subsequently, we studied the effect of increasing fibrinogen concentrations on the APC generation on cultured endothelial cells.
RESULTS: An independent inverse association between circulating APC levels and fibrinogen was found [betacoefficient, -0.16; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) -0.26, -0.06; P = 0.001]. For each 100 mg dL(-1) increase in fibrinogen, the independent risk of having low APC levels (<0.7 ng mL(-1)) was almost three times higher (OR 2.8; 95% CI 1.1, 7.2; P = 0.04). Accordingly, a notable association between increasing fibrinogen concentrations and the reduction in the thrombin-thrombomodulin dependent activation of protein C on endothelial cells was found (r = -0.57; P = 0.002).
CONCLUSIONS: We present evidence of an inverse association between circulating APC and fibrinogen levels. According to this finding together with the results of our in vitro experiments, we propose that the impairment in the generation of APC on endothelial cells constitutes a new prothrombotic mechanism of fibrinogen
