REVOLUTION OR DIVERSITY? AESTHETIC AND POLITICAL MANIFESTATIONS OF CLASS IN THREE SWEDISH RADICAL PICTUREBOOKS FROM THE 2000S AND 2010S

This article explores manifestations of class from a combined aesthetical and political point of view, focusing on a selection of Swedish children’s picture books from 2009 to 2018, in which class differences are made prominent. In this sense, they can be regarded as radical. This study examines how political aspects are intertwined with literary, visual, and multimodal means. The main purpose is to examine how the political and aesthetical merge in the manifestations of class. The publishing of radical picture books during the 2000s and 2010s coincided with a rise of norm-criti-cal discourse, including a strong emphasis on diversity rather than on social transformation. The books, I argue, do not depict radical change on a collective level, but uses various aesthetic means in their manifestations of class and inequality. Theoretically, the anal-ysis mainly draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of capital (1984), and Beverley Skeggs’s (1997) reasoning on class by adding the con-cept of respectability, as well as picturebook theory, and scholarly writing on radical picturebooks

Role of Brachytherapy in the Postoperative Management of Endometrial Cancer: Decision-Making Analysis among Experienced European Radiation Oncologists.

BACKGROUND There are various society-specific guidelines addressing adjuvant brachytherapy (BT) after surgery for endometrial cancer (EC). However, these recommendations are not uniform. Against this background, clinicians need to make decisions despite gaps between best scientific evidence and clinical practice. We explored factors influencing decision-making for adjuvant BT in clinical routine among experienced European radiation oncologists in the field of gynaecological radiotherapy (RT). We also investigated the dose and technique of BT. METHODS Nineteen European experts for gynaecological BT selected by the Groupe Européen de Curiethérapie and the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology provided their decision criteria and technique for postoperative RT in EC. The decision criteria were captured and converted into decision trees, and consensus and dissent were evaluated based on the objective consensus methodology. RESULTS The decision criteria used by the experts were tumour extension, grading, nodal status, lymphovascular invasion, and cervical stroma/vaginal invasion (yes/no). No expert recommended adjuvant BT for pT1a G1-2 EC without substantial LVSI. Eighty-four percent of experts recommended BT for pT1a G3 EC without substantial LVSI. Up to 74% of experts used adjuvant BT for pT1b LVSI-negative and pT2 G1-2 LVSI-negative disease. For 74-84% of experts, EBRT + BT was the treatment of choice for nodal-positive pT2 disease and for pT3 EC with cervical/vaginal invasion. For all other tumour stages, there was no clear consensus for adjuvant treatment. Four experts already used molecular markers for decision-making. Sixty-five percent of experts recommended fractionation regimens of 3 × 7 Gy or 4 × 5 Gy for BT as monotherapy and 2 × 5 Gy for combination with EBRT. The most commonly used applicator for BT was a vaginal cylinder; 82% recommended image-guided BT. CONCLUSIONS There was a clear trend towards adjuvant BT for stage IA G3, stage IB, and stage II G1-2 LVSI-negative EC. Likewise, there was a non-uniform pattern for BT dose prescription but a clear trend towards 3D image-based BT. Finally, molecular characteristics were already used in daily decision-making by some experts under the pretext that upcoming trials will bring more clarity to this topic

The establishment of the subject and various aspects of identity that occupied the literature and theories of the late twentieth century are examined in this doctoral thesis. Focus is on five Scandinavian novels from the 1990’s, two from Sweden, two from Norway and one from Denmark. They are studied in the following order: Ninni Holmqvist’s Något av bestående karaktär (“Something of Lasting Character” 1999), Hanne Ørstavik’s Kjærlighet (“Love” 1997), Jon Fosse’s Bly og vatn (“Lead and Water” 1992) and Magnus Dahlström’s Hem (“Home” 1996). The fifth novel, Kirsten Hammann’s Vera Winkelvir (1993), is added in the concluding chapter. By including this novel, in many ways a radical narrative of an emerging subject, I can further develop previously noted observations. The title of this thesis alludes to Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own from 1929. In it she raises the question of the right to a personal space, a right she means should apply to all human beings, not only to a limited male elite. As interest in the individual successively increased after the appearance of Woolf’s essay, the question of space diminished. By the end of the century, novelists as well as theoreticians were clearly far more concerned with the problems and effects of individualism. The five novels are analyzed chapter by chapter through the use of four central categories in contemporaneous discussions of subject and identity, namely nomenclature, intimacy, spatiality and corporeality. I also utilize writings by an international selection of theoreticians, predominantly Judith Butler, Zygmunt Bauman, Anthony Giddens and Michel Foucault. Opposing positions can be discerned in contemporary perspectives on the subject; on the one hand a view of identity characterized by essentialistic thinking, and on the other a deconstructivistic breakdown of the subject. This study shows how a partially renewed individualistic way of thinking actually provides a starting point for those works that in fact question contemporary individualism. Further, by enacting shifts in their common genre, the five novels considered modify older understandings of the subject. Extremities clash through the exposure of weaknesses in the two opposed positions, leading to a concluding elucidation of the partially renewed establishment of the subject

Åtgärdsvalsstudie väg 42, Sjöbo–Kvarbo, Borås Stad

    No full text

    No full text
