    Blood Digestion in the Mosquito, Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera: Culicidae): Activity and Distribution of Trypsin, Aminopeptidase, and α-Glucosidase in the Midgut

    The activities of trypsin, aminopeptidase, and α-glucosidase were studied in the whole midgut, anterior and posterior midgut, and posterior midgut lumen and epithelium of the mosquito Anopheles stephensi Liston. Trypsin activity was restricted entirely to the posterior midgut lumen. No trypsin activity was found before the blood meal, but activity increased continuously up to 30 h after feeding, and subsequently returned to baseline levels by 60 h. Aminopeptidase was active in anterior and posterior midgut regions before and after feeding. In whole midguts, activity rose from a baseline of ≍3 enzyme units (EU) per midgut to a maximum of 12 EU at 30 h after the blood meal, subsequently falling to baseline levels by 60 h. A similar cycle of activity was observed in the posterior midgut and posterior midgut lumen, whereas aminopeptidase in the posterior midgut epithelium decreased in activity during digestion. Aminopeptidase in the anterior midgut was maintained at a constant low level, showing no significant variation with time after feeding, α-glucosidase was active in anterior and posterior midguts before and at all times after feeding. In whole midgut homogenates, α-glucosidase activity increased slowly up to 18 h after the blood meal, then rose rapidly to a maximum at 30 h after the blood meal, whereas the subsequent decline in activity was less predictable. All posterior midgut activity was restricted to the posterior midgut lumen. Depending upon the time after feeding, >25% of the total midgut activity of α-glucosidase was located in the anterior midgut. The enzyme distributions are consistent with described structural models for digestion in mosquitoes. After blood meal ingestion, proteases are active only in the posterior midgut. Trypsin is the major primary hydrolytic protease and is secreted into the posterior midgut lumen without activation in the posterior midgut epithelium. Aminopeptidase activity is also luminal in the posterior midgut, but cellular aminopeptidases are required for peptide processing in both anterior and posterior midguts. α-glucosidase activity is elevated in the posterior midgut after feeding in response to the blood meal, whereas activity in the anterior midgut is consistent with a nectarprocessing role for this midgut regio

    In the paper we simulate a revenue-neutral cut in the social security contribution rate using five different types of macro- / microeconomic models, namely two models based on time-series data where the labour market is modelled basically demand oriented, two models of the class of computable equilibrium models which are supply oriented and finally a firm specific model for international tax burden comparisons. Our primary interest is in the employment effects the models predict due to the cut in the contribution rate. It turns out that qualitatively all models considered predict an increase in employment three years after the cut. But the employment effects differ considerably in magnitude, which follows immediately from the different behavioral assumptions underlying the different models. -- In dem Beitrag wird der Beschäftigungseffekt infolge einer aufkommensneutralen Senkung der Sozialversicherungsbeiträge simuliert. Zu diesem Zweck werden fünf unterschiedliche ökonomische Modelle verwendet, namentlich zwei Modelle, die auf Zeitreihendaten aufbauen und in denen der Arbeitsmarkt überwiegend von der Nachfrageseite dominiert wird, zwei Modelle aus der Klasse der computable equilibrium models, die typischerweise angebotsorientiert sind, und ein mikroökonomisches, firmenspezifisches Steuerbelastungsvergleichsmodell. Alle Simulationsergebnisse der Modelle weisen auf einen, wenngleich teilweise kleinen, positiven Beschäftigungseffekt hin, der sich allerdings beträchtlich in seiner Größenordnung unterscheidet. Dies ist eine unmittelbare Folge aus den unterschiedlichen Verhaltensannahmen, die den einzelnen Modellen unterliegen.

    This paper examines the employment effects of a revenue-neutral cut in the social security contribution rate in Germany by running policy simulations in four different types of macroeconomic models. Two models are based on time-series data where the labor market is modeled basically demand oriented, whereas the other two models are supply oriented computable general equilibrium models. While the predicted employment effects of the cut in the contribution rate are qualitatively similar across models three years after the cut, they differ considerably in magnitude. These differences can to a large extent be attributed to differences in the basic structure of the models. Of special importance is how prices and wages react in each model to the cut in the social security tax rate on one side, and the necessary increase of the indirect tax rate on the other side. The results, therefore, provide a guideline for assessing the outcome of policy simulations and for the further development of macroeconomic models suitable for this kind of experiments

    Influence of volcanic eruptions on midlatitude upper tropospheric aerosol and consequences for cirrus clouds – Volc Affects S Aerosol in UT and Cirrus

    The influence of downwelling stratospheric sulfurous aerosol on the UT (upper troposphere) aerosol concentrations and on cirrus clouds is investigated using CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for Regular Investigation of the Atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container observations) (between 1999–2002 and 2005–2013) and the cirrus reflectance product from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The initial period, 1999–2002, was volcanically quiescent after which the sulfurous aerosol in the LMS (lowermost stratosphere) (SLMS_{LMS}) became enhanced by several volcanic eruptions starting 2005. From 2005 to 2008 and in 2013, volcanic aerosol from several tropical eruptions increased SLMS_{LMS}. Due to consequent subsidence, the sulfur loading of the upper troposphere (SUT_{UT}) was increased by a factor of 2.5 compared to background levels. Comparison of SLMS and SUT_{UT} during the seasons March–July and August–November shows a close coupling of the UT and LMS. Finally, the relationship between SLMS_{LMS} and the cirrus cloud reflectance (CR) retrieved from MODIS spectrometer (on board the satellites Terra and Aqua) is studied. SLMS_{LMS} and CR show a strong anticorrelation, with a factor of 3.5 increase in SLMS and decrease of CR by 8 ± 2% over the period 2001–2011. We propose that the increase of SLMS_{LMS} due to volcanism has caused the coinciding cirrus CR decrease, which would be associated with a negative radiative forcing in the Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes

    ISO LWS Spectroscopy of M82: A Unified Evolutionary Model

    We present the first complete far-infrared spectrum (43 to 197 um) of M82, the brightest infrared galaxy in the sky, taken with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer of the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We detected seven fine structure emission lines, [OI] 63 and 145 um, [OIII] 52 and 88 um, [NII] 122 um, [NIII] 57 um and [CII] 158 um, and fit their ratios to a combination starburst and photo-dissociation region (PDR) model. The best fit is obtained with HII regions with n = 250 cm^{-3} and an ionization parameter of 10^{-3.5} and PDRs with n = 10^{3.3} cm^{-3} and a far-ultraviolet flux of G_o = 10^{2.8}. We applied both continuous and instantaneous starburst models, with our best fit being a 3-5 Myr old instantaneous burst model with a 100 M_o cut-off. We also detected the ground state rotational line of OH in absorption at 119.4 um. No excited level OH transitions are apparent, indicating that the OH is almost entirely in its ground state with a column density ~ 4x10^{14} cm^{-2}. The spectral energy distribution over the LWS wavelength range is well fit with a 48 K dust temperature and an optical depth, tau_{Dust} proportional to lambda^{-1}.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ, Feb. 1, 199
