Background Many studies investigating the relationship between ambient air pollution and cardiorespiratory outcomes have been conducted in developed countries despite more vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries especially in Africa. No studies previous studies have been done in South Africa informal settlements. Aim The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between ambient air pollutant exposure and self-reported cardiorespiratory outcomes amongst adults residing in four informal settlements of the Western Province of South Africa. Methods This cross-sectional study included 572 adults from four informal settlements (Khayelitsha, Marconi Beam, Oudtshoorn and Masiphumele) in the Western Cape, South Africa. The study made use of Land Use Regression to estimate each participant’s exposure to particulate matter of aerodynamic diameter of 2.5µm (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). A questionnaire was adapted from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey questionnaire to collect data on self-reported cardiorespiratory outcomes and specific confounding factors of interest. Results The median age the participants was 39 years (Interquartile Range (IQR): 33 - 45) with 88.5% female. The median NO2 level was 22.4 µg/m3 (IQR: 13.3 - 24.1) and the median PM2.5 level was 10.6 µg/m3 (IQR: 8.7 - 13.1). An increase of 10µg/m3 in annual NO2 level was found to be associated with a 2.9 (95%CI: 1.3 to 6.1) odds of having self-reported chest pain, adjusting for PM2.5 and confounders. No other significant association was found indicating an adverse health effect due to air pollution. Conclusion The study found preliminary circumstantial evidence of an association between annual ambient NO2 exposure and self-reported chest pain (a crude proxy of angina related pain), even at levels below both WHO Air Quality Guidelines and the South African National Ambient Air Quality Standards. However, the results should be interpreted cautiously due to the self-reported nature of the outcome measure and the cross-sectional design of the study

The “other” NIL and SportCrit: Narrative Identity and Liminality of Black Gendered Scholar-Athletes

    Get PDF
The purpose of this conceptual manuscript is to advance a new integrated model: the Narrative Identity (NI), and Liminality Model (NILM). The NILM advances narrative as an intervention tool for Black gendered scholar-athletes (BGSAs) by integrating NI theory (Adler et al., 2017) with the Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) model (Yosso, 2005) for positive outcomes intra-intercollegiate career. The developmental characteristic of sense-making of one’s life via the life story model and life stage phases (McAdams, 1985, 2011) are paramount to BGSAs’ articulation and development during their liminal condition (Sutton, 2017) as athletes in their orientation to sport. More specifically, orienting the NILM as a possible intervention tool for documenting and examining the evolving stories that are pertinent to BGSAs’ emerging adulthood storied realities intra-intercollegiate career are vital. Hence, it is compulsory to further the scarce literature composed of narrative identity utility in athlete development through this substantially overlooked methodology. Thus, this conceptual analysis is grounded in a critical review of scholarly literature that employed Critical Race Theory (Bell, 1992), CCW, and NI for athlete development or transition in sport scholarship. Consequently, two questions are posed to investigate scholarship to frame the NIL Model to advance positive developmental outcomes for profit-generating BGSAs

The implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) as an Indonesian Government’s strategic step has an impact on economic globalization. The study on pharmaceutical products and medical devices free trade was done using qualitative and quantitative methods. The data were collected from a round table discussion about "Free Trade in Health Goods and Services in ASEAN" which involved the Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Trade (MoT), and National Agency for Drug and Food Control (NADFC). The discussion aimed to obtain information on the readiness to meet the AEC blueprint. Secondary data on export and import of pharmaceutical products and medical devices were obtained from the MoT. The results of the study show that between 2013 and 2017 there were 70-72 product items exported to 9 ASEAN countries with a value much greater than the import. The tariff measure (TM) requirements included the Most Favored Nation (MFN) assessment and regulation of the trade remedy procedure by MoH and MoT. The implementation of ASEAN Common Technical Dossier (ACTD) and Good Manufacturing Practice inspection agreements, Bioequivalence reporting agreements, agreements related to traditional medicines and health supplement have been done by NADFC and industry. The simplification of Certificate of Origin, operation certification procedures and realization of ASEAN self-certification have to be specified. MoH must coordinate with NADFC and MoT in deciding and implementing regulation

An intensive study of Conesus Lake and its tributaries was undertaken between April 1985 and December 1986 with the following general objectives: (1) To evaluate the water quality of Conesus Lake, the source of drinking water for the Town of Livonia and the Villages of Geneseo and Avon; (2) To identify, if possible, water of lower turbidity within the lake; (3) To identify, if possible, causes of higher turbidity in raw water intakes of the Livonia and Geneseo water treatment plants; (4) To evaluate what effect, if any, the construction of a perimeter sewer has had on nutrient levels within the lake; i.e. eutrophication; (5) To identify any sources of pollution within the watershed; and (6) To provide a functional assessment of the ecological components studied and to evaluate their significance in relation to the drinking water supply. This is the final report. A Summary of Results and Recommendations and Alternatives follow directly. Detailed discussion of results may be found in the Results and Discussion section. Quarterly data reports were presented to the Health Departments (State and County) and to the municipalities (Livonia, Avon, Geneseo) on three previous occasions
