Ultrasound velocimetry in a shear-thickening wormlike micellar solution: Evidence for the coexistence of radial and vorticity shear bands
Abstract.: We carried out pointwise local velocity measurements on 40mM cetylpyridinium chloride-sodium salicylate (CPyCl-NaSal) wormlike micellar solution using high-frequency ultrasound velocimetry in a Couette shear cell. The studied wormlike solution exhibits Newtonian, shear-thinning and shear-thickening rheological behavior in a stress-controlled environment. Previous rheology, flow visualization and small-angle light/neutron scattering experiments in the shear-thickening regime of this system showed the presence of stress-driven alternating transparent and turbid rings or vorticity bands along the axis of the Couette geometry. Through local velocity measurements we observe a homogeneous flow inside the 1mm gap of the Couette cell in the shear-thinning (stress-plateau) region. Only when the solution is sheared beyond the critical shear stress (shear-thickening regime) in a stress-controlled experiment, we observe inhomogeneous flow characterized by radial or velocity gradient shear bands with a highly sheared band near the rotor and a weakly sheared band near the stator of the Couette geometry. Furthermore, fast measurements performed in the shear-thickening regime to capture the temporal evolution of local velocities indicate coexistence of both radial and vorticity shear bands. However the same measurements carried out in shear rate controlled mode of the rheometer do not show such rheological complexit
Attachment and mentalization as predictors of outcome in family therapy for adolescent anorexia nervosa
Anorexia nervosa-focussed family therapy (FT-AN) is the first-line treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN), but the predictors of poor treatment response are not well understood. The main aim of this study was to investigate the role of attachment and mentalization in predicting treatment outcome. The secondary aims of the study were to investigate therapeutic alliance at 1 month as a predictor of outcome, and to test the associations between alliance and baseline attachment and mentalization. 192 adolescents with AN and their parents were recruited as they began family therapy in out-patient specialist eating disorder services. Self-report measures of attachment, mentalization, and emotion regulation were completed at the start of treatment by adolescent patients and one of their parents. Self-reported alliance scores were collected at one month. Higher scores on the Certainty Scale of the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire, completed by parents, which indicate over-certainty about mental states, were the strongest predictor of poor outcome (Odds Ratio: 0.42, CI: 0.20–0.87). Similarly, for adolescents, higher Lack of Clarity scores on the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, representing being unclear about one’s feelings, were predictive of positive treatment outcome (OR: 1.10, CI: 1.00–1.21). Higher alliance scores at 1 month predicted positive outcome, and were associated with attachment security and mentalization. These novel findings suggest that, particularly in parents, a tendency towards excessive certainty about mental states in others may predict poor outcome in FT-AN. Further research is warranted to replicate the finding and characterise families at risk of poor outcome
Magnetic stress as a driving force of structural distortions: the case of CrN
We show that the observed transition from rocksalt to orthorhombic P
symmetry in CrN can be understood in terms of stress anisotropy. Using local
spin density functional theory, we find that the imbalance between stress
stored in spin-paired and spin-unpaired Cr nearest neighbors causes the
rocksalt structure to be unstable against distortions and justifies the
observed antiferromagnetic ordering. This stress has a purely magnetic origin,
and may be important in any system where the coupling between spin ordering and
structure is strong.Comment: 4 pages (two columns) 4 figure
Competition between Magnetic and Structural Transition in CrN
CrN is observed to undergo a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition
accompanied by a shear distortion from cubic NaCl-type to orthorhombic
structure. Our first-principle plane wave and ultrasoft pseudopotential
calculations confirm that the distorted antiferromagnetic phase with spin
configuration arranged in double ferromagnetic sheets along [110] is the most
stable. Antiferromagnetic ordering leads to a large depletion of states around
Fermi level, but it does not open a gap. Simultaneous occurence of structural
distortion and antiferromagnetic order is analyzed.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Internet of things
Manual of Digital Earth / Editors: Huadong Guo, Michael F. Goodchild, Alessandro Annoni .- Springer, 2020 .- ISBN: 978-981-32-9915-3Digital Earth was born with the aim of replicating the real world within the digital world. Many efforts have been made to observe and sense the Earth, both from space (remote sensing) and by using in situ sensors. Focusing on the latter, advances in Digital Earth have established vital bridges to exploit these sensors and their networks by taking location as a key element. The current era of connectivity envisions that everything is connected to everything. The concept of the Internet of Things(IoT)emergedasaholisticproposaltoenableanecosystemofvaried, heterogeneous networked objects and devices to speak to and interact with each other. To make the IoT ecosystem a reality, it is necessary to understand the electronic components, communication protocols, real-time analysis techniques, and the location of the objects and devices. The IoT ecosystem and the Digital Earth (DE) jointly form interrelated infrastructures for addressing today’s pressing issues and complex challenges. In this chapter, we explore the synergies and frictions in establishing an efficient and permanent collaboration between the two infrastructures, in order to adequately address multidisciplinary and increasingly complex real-world problems. Although there are still some pending issues, the identified synergies generate optimism for a true collaboration between the Internet of Things and the Digital Earth
Production and reliability oriented SOFC cell and stack design
The paper presents an innovative development methodology for a production and reliability oriented SOFC cell and stack design aiming at improving the stacks robustness, manufacturability, efficiency and cost. Multi-physics models allowed a probabilistic approach to consider statistical variations in production, material and operating parameters for the optimization phase. A methodology for 3D description of spatial distribution of material properties based on a random field models was developed and validated by experiments. Homogenized material models on multiple levels of the SOFC stack were established. The probabilistic models were related to the experimentally obtained properties of base materials to establish a statistical relationship between the material properties and the most relevant load effects. Software algorithms for meta models that allow the detection of relationships between input and output parameters and to perform a sensitivity analysis were developed and implemented. The capabilities of the methodology is illustrated on two practical cases
Exploring the Ni redox activity in polyanionic compounds as conceivable high potential cathodes for Na rechargeable batteries
Although nickel-based polyanionic compounds are expected to exhibit a high operating voltage for batteries based on the Ni2+/3+ redox couple activity, some rare experimental studies on the electrochemical performance of these materials are reported, resulting from the poor kinetics of the bulk materials in both Li and Na nonaqueous systems. Herein, the electrochemical activity of the Ni2+/3+ redox couple in the mixed-polyanionic framework Na4Ni3(PO4)2(P2O7) is reported for the first time. This novel material exhibits a remarkably high operating voltage when cycled in sodium cells in both carbonate- and ionic liquid-based electrolytes. The application of a carbon coating and the use of an ionic liquid-based electrolyte enable the reversible sodium ion (de-)insertion in the host structure accompanied by the redox activity of Ni2+/3+ at operating voltages as high as 4.8 V vs Na/Na+. These results present the realization of Ni-based mixed polyanionic compounds with improved electrochemical activity and pave the way for the discovery of new Na-based high potential cathode materials
Recent experimental probes of shear banding
Recent experimental techniques used to investigate shear banding are
reviewed. After recalling the rheological signature of shear-banded flows, we
summarize the various tools for measuring locally the microstructure and the
velocity field under shear. Local velocity measurements using dynamic light
scattering and ultrasound are emphasized. A few results are extracted from
current works to illustrate open questions and directions for future research.Comment: Review paper, 23 pages, 11 figures, 204 reference
The impact of human expert visual inspection on the discovery of strong gravitational lenses
We investigate the ability of human ’expert’ classifiers to identify strong gravitational lens candidates in Dark Energy Survey like imaging. We recruited a total of 55 people that completed more than 25% of the project. During the classification task, we present to the participants 1489 images. The sample contains a variety of data including lens simulations, real lenses, non-lens examples, and unlabeled data. We find that experts are extremely good at finding bright, well-resolved Einstein rings, whilst arcs with g-band signal-to-noise less than ∼25 or Einstein radii less than ∼1.2 times the seeing are rarely recovered. Very few non-lenses are scored highly. There is substantial variation in the performance of individual classifiers, but they do not appear to depend on the classifier’s experience, confidence or academic position. These variations can be mitigated with a team of 6 or more independent classifiers. Our results give confidence that humans are a reliable pruning step for lens candidates, providing pure and quantifiably complete samples for follow-up studies
