COMPETITIVENESS OF NATIONS IN THE GLOBALIZATION ERA: IS THE (IN)EXISTENCE OF A COLLECTIVE STRATEGY RELEVANT?

    Get PDF
Economic globalization puts businesses and countries facing new opportunities and challenges and engenders a high degree of uncertainty/risk. Portugal, facing this new global environment, has been experiencing poor economic performance, growing in the last decade at a rate lower than the European Union’s average. How to seize opportunities and overcome challenges, while at the same time ensuring the desired convergence? This challenge is put in terms of the relations between the regulatory and economic policies of States and the competitiveness of nation-States. Using concrete examples, in particular the Portuguese case, we will attempt to answer the question: does the existence (or absence) of a collective strategy, understood as a concerted strategy between the State and companies, their associations and other institutions, produce significant impact on the competitiveness of Nations? To answer this question, the analysis will focus on the following topics: challenges posed by globalization in terms of competitiveness of countries; evolution of the Portuguese economy, between 1975 and 2007, compared to those of Finland, Ireland and South Korea, countries of recognized success in the context of globalization; lessons that can be drawn concerning the presence or absence of a collective strategy and its impact on the competitiveness of these countries.globalization; competitiveness; institutions; total factor productivity; collective strategy; Portugal

    Instantons on Sasakian 7-manifolds

We study a natural contact instanton (CI) equation on gauge fields over 7-dimensional Sasakian manifolds, which is closely related both to the transverse Hermitian Yang-Mills (tHYM) condition and the G_2-instanton equation. We obtain, by Fredholm theory, a finite-dimensional local model for the moduli space of irreducible solutions. We derive cohomological conditions for smoothness, and we express its dimension in terms of the index of a transverse elliptic operator. Finally we show that the moduli space of selfdual contact instantons (ASDI) is K\"ahler, in the Sasakian case. As an instance of concrete interest, we specialise to transversely holomorphic Sasakian bundles over contact Calabi-Yau 7-manifolds, and we show that, in this context, the notions of contact instanton, integrable G_2-instanton and HYM connection coincide.Comment: This is the updated version, published in The Quarterly Journal of Mathematics (2023

Zero Mode Effect Generalization for the Electromagnetic Current in the Light Front

We consider in this work the electromagnetic current for a system composed by two charged bosons and show that it has a structure of many bodies even in the impulse approximation, when described in the light front time x+x^+. In terms of the two-body component for the bound state, the current contains two-body operators. We discuss the process of pair creation from the interacting photon and interpret it as a zero mode contribution to the current and its consequences for the components of currents in the light-front.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:hep-th/050911

Surface Structure Determination of Black Phosphorus Using Photoelectron Diffraction

    Get PDF
Atomic structure of single-crystalline black phosphorus was studied by high resolution synchrotron-based photoelectron diffraction (XPD). The results show that the topmost phosphorene layer in the black phosphorus is slightly displaced compared to the bulk structure and presents a small contraction in the direction perpendicular to the surface. Furthermore, the XPD results show the presence of a small buckling among the surface atoms, in agreement with previously reported scanning tunneling microscopy results. The contraction of the surface layer added to the presence of the buckling indicates an uniformity in the size of the sp3 bonds between P atoms at the surface

Translation of an Excerpt from Anna Livia Plurabelle’s Final Monologue

    Get PDF
This is a translation of an excerpt from the last three pages of Finnegans Wake (FW 626.30 – 628.16), in which the river-character Anna Livia Plurabelle (ALP) presents a bitter farewell monologue, motivated by the abandonment of her family and the supposed betrayal of her mountain-husband Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker (HCE) with her cloud-daughter, young Issy. While remembering the past, ALP feels old, alone and without the strength to continue, disintegrating herself from a world in which she no longer fits. She, who monologues at the same time that her family sleeps, goes to meet the father-sea in a flow that closes the last page of the work with the excerpt “A way a lone a last a loved a long the” (no period). However, this absence of punctuation provokes a circular movement that takes the reader back to the initial page, which begins with the word riverrun, in lowercase, which connects itself with the incomplete sentence “A way a lone a last a loved a long the” from page 628. In this way, what seemed to be the end of the character and also of the book soon becomes the restart of both. It is as if the river-woman who disappears into the sea evaporates herself and reappears on the front page after raining from her cloud-daughter, being vigorously reborn through her rival.

Sensor Data Visualization in Virtual Globe

Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies. With the recent developments related with sensors in matters of standardization and accessibility, valuable data covering different geographical subjects have become widely available. The applications that can leverage sensor data are still under development and there is much to do in this subject in the scientific community. Data visualization tools are one of the immediately relevant needs related with sensor data. Such tools would help to increase the understanding and exploration of the data from which many other fields can get benefits. Virtual Globes are becoming increasingly popular in the society. The existence of several implementations and millions of users (scientific and no scientific) around the world are a proof of their increasing usability as a tool for representing and sharing geographical content. In this document we present a generic tool for visualizing sensor data retrieved from SOS servers over the NASA World Wind virtual globe. For this, we started by creating a classification of sensor data that helps in defining possible visualizations for the different types of sensor data. Using this classification as a basis, we have implemented a set of visualization types to ease sensor data exploration. We also included analysis capabilities by integrating the SEXTANTE library in the visualization tool. The results of the analysis can be included in the virtual globe as part of the visualizations
