Identification with iterative nearest neighbors using domain knowledge

    Get PDF
A new iterative and interactive algorithm called CSN (Classification by Successive Neighborhood) to be used in a complex descriptive objects identification approach is presented. Complex objects are those designed by experts within a knowledge base to describe taxa (monography species) and also real organisms (collection specimens). The algorithm consists of neighborhoods computations from an incremental basis of characters using a dissimilarity function which takes into account structures and values of the objects. A discriminant power function is combined with domain knowledge on the features set at each iteration. It is shown that CSN consistently outperforms methods such as identification trees and simplifies interactive classification processes comparatively to search for K-Nearest-Neighbors method

The linked destinies of the psychologist figure and the sector for « inadapted children »        The classical age locked up worrying people in the name of morality, contemporary societies hand them over to an army of so-called experts in the name of health. The advent of psychiatry in the nineteenth century was the first great stage of this evolution. The second was the appearance of « specialised education » (within the « inadapted children » sector). In attempting to retrace the birth and the ups and downs of this sector, this paper describes the arrival of the figure of the psychologist : a professional who’s posture is susbstantially different from his medical predecessors but nevertheless inspired by them

Dynamic NanoSIMS ion imaging of unicellular freshwater algae exposed to copper

This work demonstrates the capabilities of nanoscale secondary-ion mass spectrometry, using the Cameca NanoSIMS50 ion microprobe, to detect and image the copper-ion distribution in microalgal cells exposed to nanomolar and micromolar copper concentrations. In parallel to 63Cu− secondary-ion maps, images of 12C−, 12C14N−, and 31P− secondary ions were collected and analysed. A correlation of 63Cu− secondary-ion maps with those found for 12C14N− and 31P− demonstrated the possible association of Cu with cell components rich in proteins and phosphorus. The results highlighted the potential of NanoSIMS for intracellular tracking of essential trace elements such as Cu in single cells of the microalga Chlorella kesslerii. Comparative study of directional solidification of Al-7 wt% Si alloys in Space and on Earth: Effects of gravity on dendrite growth and Columnar-to-equiaxed transition

    Get PDF
International audienceDirectional solidification experiments of grain refined Al −7 wt% Si alloy were carried out on Earth under normal gravity conditions (1 g) and in the Material Science Laboratory on board the International Space Station in microgravity environment (μg), to investigate the impact of the gravity on the solidification microstructure and the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET). The increase of the dendrite growth velocity imposed by the processing conditions during the experiments leads to a size decrease of the dendrite microstructure and to a more homogeneous eutectic distribution under both 1 g and μg conditions. A progressive CET is obtained in both samples implying the existence of an intermediate region after the inception position of CET defined as the end of growth of the columnar dendrites. However, a more progressive CET and longer dendrites aligned with the applied temperature gradient are observed in presence of gravity. This difference is attributed to the convective flow on Earth. On the one hand, it carries the grains that nucleate ahead of the columnar front away into the bulk liquid phase. On the other hand, it sweeps the solute away from the dendrite tip zone. Consequently, the blocking effect is diminished, allowing extended continuous growth of the elongated dendrites

La21Ru9+xIn5-x (Pearson symbol tI140) is isotypic to the filled Y3Rh2-type structure, from which it can be derived through an ordered substitution at two sites. One of the square-prismatic sites (site symmetry ..m) is occupied by a mixture of Ru and In atoms and one of the square-antiprismatic sites (4/m..) is fully occupied by In atoms
