OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D affects multiple body functions through the regulation of gene expression. In sports medicine, its influence on musculoskeletal health and performance is of particular interest. Vitamin D insufficiency might decrease athletic performance and increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Several studies have demonstrated vitamin D deficiency in professional athletes; however, the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in professional handball players is yet unknown. METHODS: The study was planned as a prospective, non-interventional study. We examined 70 male elite handball athletes (first league) in a pre-competition medical assessment in July. Age, height, weight, body mass index, 25-OH vitamin D, calcium, and parathyroid hormone were evaluated, and a sun exposure score was calculated. Players were then divided into two groups of vitamin D levels: insufficient (<30 ng/mL) and sufficient (≥30 ng/mL). RESULTS: The mean 25-OH vitamin D level of the 70 players was 33.5 ± 10.9 ng/mL (median 32.2, IQR 26.5-38.9 ng/mL). Thirty-nine (55.7%) had sufficient and 31 (44.3%) insufficient levels. Athletes with sufficient vitamin D levels had significantly lower parathyroid hormone levels than athletes with insufficiency (24.9 ± 12.1 vs. 33.5 ± 15.1 ng/mL, p = 0.02). All other parameters evaluated demonstrated no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D insufficiency is a common finding in professional handball athletes even in summer, which might negatively affect physical performance. Furthermore, it might lead to an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries and infections. This should be evaluated in further studies

The study was performed following a completely randomized design, using 45 male rats (Rattus novergicus) divided into 5 groups. Rats in group 1 (K1) were given CMC 1 % for 7 days and followed by aquadest administration 8 hours post given CMC on day 7. Group 2 was given CMC 1 % for 7 days and treated with paracetamol at dose 2,5 g/kg BW 8 hours post given CMC on day 7. Groups 3 (K3), 4 (K4), and 5 (K5) were pretreated with ethanolic extract of Acalypha indica L. leaves at the dose of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg BW for 7 days respectively, followed by paracetamol administration at the dose of 2.5 g/kg BW in the next 8 hours on day 7. Paracetamol hepatotoxicity and extracts activity were measured based on SGPT and SGOT activity level on day 0, 8 hours after last administration of extract on day 7, and 24 hours post paracetamol administration. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA. The result showed that the administration of ethanolic extract of Acalypha indica leaves at the dose of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg BW was significantly reduced SGPT and SGOT level (P<0,05) in rats that were induced with paracetamol. Based on the results of SGPT and SGOT serum activity, it can be concluded that ethanolic extract of Acalypha indica L. potential as hepatoprotective agent

The coral reef is part of the marine ecosystem that important because of its role as a source of life, especially for marine variety creatures. This study aims to determine the relationship of the diversity of reef fish and plankton to coral reef cover on the Panjang Island of Anak Krakatoa Mount, Lampung. Line Intercept Transect used for retrieval of coral reef data and the Underwater Visual Census method for collecting coral reef fish data. Diversity and dominance index are utilized to analyze correlations between them. A good coral reef is obtained at point 2 (5 meters in depth) while at other points the condition of the coral reef is classified as moderate. The highest number of fish is found at point 1 (5 meters in depth) with 56 individuals. The highest plankton diversity is 3.04 Index whereas located at point 2 (0 meters in depth). They have a positive correlation (0.955-coral reef coverage with fishes, 0.916-diversity of reef fish and coral reefs, 0.833-diversity of reef fish with plankton) upon their relationship

OBJECTIVES: In case of acute thrombosis, lower limbs bypasses can, in certain cases, be cleared by local intra-arterial fibrinolysis (LIF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the secondary patency of thrombosed bypasses after fibrinolysis. METHODS: This retrospective study includes all patients hospitalized for thrombosed bypasses of the lower limbs that were treated with in situ fibrinolysis using urokinase, between 2004 and 2013, in two French university hospital centers. Fibrinolysis was indicated in case of recent thrombosis (< 3 weeks) provoking acute limb ischemia without sensory-motor deficit and in the absence of general contraindications. The secondary patency of the grafts was defined as the time after fibrinolysis without a new thrombotic event. RESULTS: There were 207 patients, hospitalized for recent thrombosis of 244 bypasses. The LIF was efficient in 74% of the cases (n=180). Secondary patency of these bypasses, was 54.2% and 32.4% overall, 68.3% and 50.3% for the supra-inguinal bypasses and 48.3% and 21.5% for the infra-inguinal bypasses, at 1 year and 5 years respectively. There is a significant difference (p = 0.002) regarding the permeability of the supra-inguinal and infra-inguinal bypasses. The survival rate was 75% (± 6.4%) at 5 years and the limb salvage rate was 89% (± 3.3%), 78.2% (±5.1%) and 75% (±5.8%) at 1 year, 3 years et 5 years respectively. The only independent factor influencing the secondary patency of infra-inguinal bypasses that was significant in a multivariate analysis was the infragenicular localization of the distal anastomosis (p=0.023). CONCLUSIONS: LIF is an effective approach that often allows the identification of the underlying cause, permitting elective adjunctive treatment of the underlying cause. Although LIF is at least as effective as its therapeutic alternatives described in the literature, the secondary patency of the bypasses remains modest and encourages close monitoring, particularly in patients with an infragenicular bypass
