Koinonia in the city: Relations in the larger urban congregations of the Reformed churchesKoinonia is of vital importance for the church. It is not only a Biblical injunction, but also, sociologically speaking, a prerequisite for the preservation of faith in theChristian community. Therefore it is imperative that the church’s ministry encourages koinonia. This is especially true for the church in an urban context, where relational networks have been severely impaired. The traditional pattern of ministry of churches in the Reformed tradition, the shepherd-flock model, does not succeed in stimulating koinonia under these circumstances. Therefore, the choice is rather made for the body of Christ-model, with complementary koinonia-groupings as theory of practice

    Cellijnen en Salmonella

In human gastrointestinal disease caused by Salmonella, transepithelial migration of neutrophils follows the attachment of bacteria to epithelial tissue. This migration of neutrophils is stimulated by the release of chemokines, including interleukin-8 (Il -8), from the epithelial cells. We have developed an in vitro model system (human epithelial monolayers, among which Caco-2 cells grown on microtiter multiwell plates) for studying host-pathogen interactions. After infection with different pathogens we measured Il-8 production during time. Results showed that Il-8 release was time related and varied with the pathogen. Salmonella enteritidis (Se) did induce the highest response. Subsequently, three doses of this Se strain were used and the Il-8 response was measured at different time points. Caco-2 cells remained intact over a period of 24h, the production of Il-8 increased in time and was found to be Se dose-dependent. Other tested epithelial monolayers, such as HT29 colon cancer cells, gave similar results.

Photoconductive switching of a high-voltage spark gap

We have demonstrated photoconductive switching of a gas-filled spark gap. A femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser was focused in a 1 mm spark gap biased at 4.5 kV. There is a clear transition between triggered operation, when only part of the path between the electrodes is ionized, and photoconductive switching, when the entire length of the gap is ionized directly by the laser. The measured standard deviation of the time fluctuations between the rising edge of the transmitted electrical pulse and the laser was less than 15 ps

    Properties of 3-manifolds for relativists

In canonical quantum gravity certain topological properties of 3-manifolds are of interest. This article gives an account of those properties which have so far received sufficient attention, especially those concerning the diffeomorphism groups of 3-manifolds. We give a summary of these properties and list some old and new results concerning them. The appendix contains a discussion of the group of large diffeomorphisms of the ll-handle 3-manifold.Comment: 20 pages. Plain-TeX, no figures, 1 Table (A4 format

Model-based Aeroservoelastic Design and Load Alleviation of Large Wind Turbine Blades

    No full text
This paper presents an aeroservoelastic modeling approach for dynamic load alleviation in large wind turbines with trailing-edge aerodynamic surfaces. The tower, potentially on a moving base, and the rotating blades are modeled using geometrically non-linear composite beams, which are linearized around reference conditions with arbitrarily-large structural displacements. Time-domain aerodynamics are given by a linearized 3-D unsteady vortexlattice method and the resulting dynamic aeroelastic model is written in a state-space formulation suitable for model reductions and control synthesis. A linear model of a single blade is used to design a Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian regulator on its root-bending moments, which is finally shown to provide load reductions of about 20% in closed-loop on the full wind turbine non-linear aeroelastic model

An Analysis of the Representations of the Mapping Class Group of a Multi-Geon Three-Manifold

It is well known that the inequivalent unitary irreducible representations (UIR's) of the mapping class group GG of a 3-manifold give rise to ``theta sectors'' in theories of quantum gravity with fixed spatial topology. In this paper, we study several families of UIR's of GG and attempt to understand the physical implications of the resulting quantum sectors. The mapping class group of a three-manifold which is the connected sum of R3\R^3 with a finite number of identical irreducible primes is a semi-direct product group. Following Mackey's theory of induced representations, we provide an analysis of the structure of the general finite dimensional UIR of such a group. In the picture of quantized primes as particles (topological geons), this general group-theoretic analysis enables one to draw several interesting qualitative conclusions about the geons' behavior in different quantum sectors, without requiring an explicit knowledge of the UIR's corresponding to the individual primes.Comment: 52 pages, harvmac, 2 postscript figures, epsf required. Integrated chronic care management for patients with atrial fibrillation : a rationale for redesigning atrial fibrillation care

    Get PDF
Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a highly prevalent heart rhythm disturbance, often associated with underlying (cardio)vascular disease. Due to this the management of AF is often complex and current practice calls for a more comprehensive, multifactorial and patient-centred approach. Therefore an Integrated Chronic Care approach in AF was developed and implemented in terms of a nurse-led specialized outpatient clinic for patients with AF. A randomised controlled trial comparing the nurse-led approach with usual care demonstrated superiority in terms of cardiovascular hospitalization and death as well as cost-effectiveness in terms of Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) and life years, in favour of the nurse-led approach. Implementing such approach can be difficult since daily practice can be persistent. To highlight the importance of integrated care wherein the nurse fulfils a significant role, and to provide a guide in developing and continuing such approach, this paper presents the theoretical framework of the AF-Clinic based on the principles of the Taxonomy for Integrated Chronic Atrial Fibrillation Management.Jeroen M L Hendriks, Harry J G M Crijns, Hubertus J M Vrijhoe
