    Advancing the remote sensing of precipitation

    Satellite-based global precipitation data has addressed the limitations of rain gauges and weather radar systems in forecasting applications and for weather and climate studies. Inspite of this ability, a number of issues that require the development of advanced concepts to address key challenges in satellite-based observations of precipitation were identified during the Advanced Concepts Workshop on Remote Sensing of Precipitation at Multiple Scales at the University of California. These include quantification of uncertainties of individual sensors and their propagation into multisensor products warrants a great deal of research. The development of metrics for validation and uncertainty analysis are of great importance. Bias removal, particularly probability distribution function (PDF)-based adjustment, deserves more in-depth research. Development of a near-real-time probabilistic uncertainty model for satellitebased precipitation estimates is highly desirable

    The study of the rheological properties of lime suspensions is a useful means to evaluate the workability of lime mortars. In this work, we studied the flow behaviour of two industrial hydrated limes, one of calcitic and the other of dolomitic composition, by means of two types of rheometer with different geometry and setup mode. The obtained results were interpreted taking into account the differences in microstructure and surface properties of the suspended particles. Calcitic lime dry particles are formed by angular and polydisperse clusters and, once dispersed in water, they behave like thixotropic materials. On the other hand, the dolomitic lime is formed by nanoparticles and small round cluster and it shows a pronounced plastic behaviour in suspension. This fundamental difference between the two materials explains the traditional preference for dolomitic lime mortars for plastering and rendering applications.El estudio de las propiedades reológicas de suspensiones de cal es una herramienta muy útil para evaluar la trabajabilidad de morteros de cal. En este trabajo se ha estudiado el comportamiento en suspensión de dos cales hidratadas, de composición calcítica y dolomítica, mediante dos tipos de reómetros con geometría y modalidades distintas de medida. Los resultados obtenidos se han interpretado teniendo en cuenta las diferencias en la microestructura y las propiedades de superficie de las partículas en suspensión. Las partículas de cal calcítica están formadas por aglomerados angulares y polidispersos y, una vez dispersadas en agua, presentan un comportamiento tixotrópico. Por su parte, la cal dolomítica está formada por nanopartículas y pequeños agregados redondeados y muestra en suspensión un pronunciado comportamiento plástico. Esta importante diferencia entre las dos cales explica la preferencia tradicional de morteros de cal dolomítica para aplicaciones en revocos

    The effect of successional stage and salinity on the vertical distribution of seeds in salt-marsh soils

    Seed bank density and similarity between seed bank and above-ground vegetation along depth were compared between two salt-marshes different in age. In addition, the effect of salinity on the variation in seed bank density and similarity between seed bank and aboveground vegetation along depth was investigated. The study was conducted in an euhaline saltmarsh that contained both old and newly created habitats. In addition, two other old saltmarshes were selected to study the effect of salinity on the distribution pattern of seed bank and similarity between seed bank and above-ground vegetation at different soil depths. One of them was mesohaline, the other euhaline.Ten plots of 2m × 2m were situated in the new salt-marsh (existing since 2002) and 80 plots in the three old salt-marshes. Soil samples were collected at three different depths (0- 5cm, 5-10cm and 10-15cm) in spring 2006. After washing by fresh water, the soil samples were spread in the greenhouse to allow viable seeds to germinate. Germination experiments lasted 6 months and all seedlings were identified and removed after identification. Aboveground vegetation composition was determined during the growing season in all plots. Viable seed density was calculated for each plot and for the three different depths; the similarity between seed bank and floristic composition of the above-ground vegetation was calculated. A general linear model was used to investigate the effect of soil depth, age and salinity of the salt-marsh on density and similarity between seed bank and above-ground vegetation.The results showed that seed density decreased with depth in all salt-marshes irrespective of their age and soil salinity. Seed density and similarity between seed bank and above-ground vegetation were higher in the new salt-marsh than in the old one in the same study area. This is because in young as well as in old successional stages, the seed bank was mostly composed of new colonizers, while most perennial species were absent from the soil seed bank, although they were dominant in the above-ground vegetation of the old salt-marsh.The characteristics of the seed bank of a mesohaline salt-marsh were found not to be fundamentally different from that of both euhaline salt-marshes

    Disclosed are fused ring bridge, ring-locked dyes that form thermally stable photorefractive compositions. The fused ring bridge structures are .pi.-conjugated bonds in benzene-, naphthalene- or anthracene-derived fused ring systems that connect donor and acceptor groups. The donor and acceptor groups contribute to a high molecular dipole moment and linear polarizability anisotropy. The polarization characteristics of the dye molecules are stabilized since the bonds in the fused ring bridge are not susceptible to rotation, reducing the opportunity for photoisomerization. The dyes are compatible with polymeric compositions, including thermoplastics. The dyes are electrically neutral but have charge transport, electronic and orientational properties such that upon illumination of a composition containing the dye, the dye facilitates refractive index modulation and a photorefractive effect that can be utilized advantageously in numerous applications such as in optical quality devices and biological imaging
