ABSTRACT Korgen lyfter [Raising Basket knowledge] is a Swedish national project started by handicraft consultants from three different regions in 2019. The project aims to promote basket making and knowledge by strengthening contemporary basket makers, make the diversity of domestic basket traditions visible and increase the interest of basket making. Through efforts in training, inventory work, seminars, lectures and networking, nationally and internationally, the project has made knowledge available and problematized the question of the fragile position of basket making. Among other things, the project has been involved in developing shorter courses in basket making and started a basket appeal related to the UNESCOs convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Through a traveling exhibition, different events as well as high digital presence, the project has reached many people

Association of Clinical Factors with the Costs of Kidney Transplantation in the Current Era

Background: Kidney transplantation is reported to save costs compared to maintenance dialysis. We analyzed the current actual costs of kidney transplantation compared to dialysis, and analyzed risk factors for higher costs after transplantation. Material/Methods: Altogether, 338 kidney transplant recipients between 2009 and 2014 were included in this study. All individual-level cost data from specialized health care and data from all reimbursed medication and travel costs were acquired from official records. Cost data were compared before and after transplantation within the same patients starting from dialysis initiation and continued until the end of follow-up at the end of 2015. Results: Total annual costs were median 53 275 EUR per patient in dialysis, 59 583 EUR for the first post-transplantation year (P Conclusions: After the first posttransplant year the costs of a kidney transplant patient for the health care system arePeer reviewe

Timing of Organ Procurement From Brain-Dead Donors Associates With Short- and Long-Term Outcomes After Liver Transplantation

Brain death-induced cytokine storm is thought to harm transplantable organs. However, longer procurement times have been associated with non-inferior or better outcomes in kidney, heart, and lung transplants, while optimal procurement time for liver allografts is unknown. Our aim was to analyze the association of time interval from brain death to organ procurement with liver allograft outcomes in two nationwide cohorts. The association of procurement interval with graft survival and short-term complications was analysed in multivariable models. Altogether 643 and 58,017 orthotopic liver transplantations from brain-dead donors were included from Finland between June 2004 and December 2017 and the US between January 2008 and August 2018, respectively. Median time from brain death to organ procurement was 10.5 h in Finland and 34.6 h in the US. Longer interval associated with better graft survival (non-linearly, p = 0.016) and less acute rejections (OR 0.935 95% CI 0.894-0.978) in the US cohort, and better early allograft function (p = 0.005; Beta -0.048 95% CI -0.085 -(-0.011)) in the Finnish cohort, in multivariable models adjusted with Donor Risk Index, recipient age, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease and indication for transplantation. Progressive liver injury after brain death is unlikely. Rushing to recover seems unnecessary; rest and repair might prove beneficial.Peer reviewe

Salivary Biomarkers and Oral Health in Liver Transplant Recipients, with an Emphasis on Diabetes : Salivary biomarkers in liver transplant recipients

    Get PDF
Salivary biomarkers have been linked to various systemic diseases. We examined the association between salivary biomarkers, periodontal health, and microbial burden in liver transplant (LT) recipients with and without diabetes, after transplantation. We hypothesized that diabetic recipients would exhibit impaired parameters. This study included 84 adults who received an LT between 2000 and 2006 in Finland. Dental treatment preceded transplantation. The recipients were re-examined, on average, six years later. We evaluated a battery of salivary biomarkers, microbiota, and subjective oral symptoms. Periodontal health was assessed, and immunosuppressive treatments were recorded. Recipients with impaired periodontal health showed higher matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) levels (p < 0.05) and MMP-8/tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP1) ratios (p < 0.001) than recipients with good periodontal health. Diabetes post-LT was associated with impaired periodontal health (p < 0.05). No difference between groups was found in the microbial counts. Salivary biomarker levels did not seem to be affected by diabetes. However, the advanced pro-inflammatory state induced by and associated with periodontal inflammation was reflected in the salivary biomarker levels, especially MMP-8 and the MMP-8/TIMP-1 molar ratio. Thus, these salivary biomarkers may be useful for monitoring the oral inflammatory state and the course of LT recipients.Peer reviewe

Introduction Overtreatment of localised prostate cancer is substantial despite increased use of active surveillance. No randomised trials help define how to monitor patients or when to initiate treatment with curative intent. Methods and analysis A randomised, multicentre, intervention trial designed to evaluate the safety of an MRI-based active surveillance protocol, with standardised triggers for repeated biopsies and radical treatment. The aim is to reduce overtreatment of prostate cancer. 2000 men will be randomly allocated to either surveillance according to current practice or to standardised triggers at centres in Sweden, Norway, Finland and the UK. Men diagnosed in the past 12 months with prostate cancer, 0.2ng/mL/cc, any International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade 1 are eligible. Men with ISUP grade 2 in Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval was obtained in each participating country. Results for the primary and secondary outcome measures will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Trial registration number NCT02914873.Peer reviewe

Researching traditional handicraft skills – cleaving wood and bending wood to bentwood boxes.

    No full text
This essay concerns the reconstruction of historic traditional handicraft processes in wood cleaving and bending wood to bentwood boxes. It is based on two ethnology publications from the 1940’s and their source material concerning bentwood vessel production. A central issue is to determine if it is possible to recycle the source material to address new questions. On the basis of the source information, practical experiments have been carried out according to the method authentic processual reconstruction. This means that, as far as possible, the original tools, equipment, and techniques are used. Among other things, production of big bent pine wood cases using the same methods that have been described from the village VĂ„mhus in Dalecarlia are examined. This involves hand-cleaving large pine logs into boards. This essay advocates the importance of conducting handicraft research in a higher educational environment to make it as transparent and as reliable as other academic research fields and the need of stronger theory-building in the field of practical handicraft-research. Finally, focus is placed on those who conduct the contemporary research and in the long run, are shaping the functional theories and methods in this subject.Uppsats för avlĂ€ggande av filosofie masterexamen i kulturvĂ„rd, 30 h
