Long-wavelength limit of gyrokinetics in a turbulent tokamak and its intrinsic ambipolarity
Recently, the electrostatic gyrokinetic Hamiltonian and change of coordinates
have been computed to order in general magnetic geometry. Here
is the gyrokinetic expansion parameter, the gyroradius over the
macroscopic scale length. Starting from these results, the long-wavelength
limit of the gyrokinetic Fokker-Planck and quasineutrality equations is taken
for tokamak geometry. Employing the set of equations derived in the present
article, it is possible to calculate the long-wavelength components of the
distribution functions and of the poloidal electric field to order
. These higher-order pieces contain both neoclassical and turbulent
contributions, and constitute one of the necessary ingredients (the other is
given by the short-wavelength components up to second order) that will
eventually enter a complete model for the radial transport of toroidal angular
momentum in a tokamak in the low flow ordering. Finally, we provide an explicit
and detailed proof that the system consisting of second-order gyrokinetic
Fokker-Planck and quasineutrality equations leaves the long-wavelength radial
electric field undetermined; that is, the turbulent tokamak is intrinsically
ambipolar.Comment: 70 pages. Typos in equations (63), (90), (91), (92) and (129)

Systemic fungal endophytes and ploidy level in Festuca vivipara populations in North European Islands
Exploring the regional pattern of variation in traits driven by symbiotic interactions may provide insights to understand the evolutionary processes that operate over plant populations. Polyploidy, which is associated with fitness improvement, is expected to increase with latitude and altitude. However, it has never been explored in relation with the occurrence of epichloid fungal endophytes in plants. Both, variation in ploidy level and in the incidence of fungal endophytes, are known to occur in species of fine fescues. Here, we surveyed the occurrence of systemic fungal endophytes in natural Festuca vivipara populations in North European islands. In addition, we identified the fungal species associated with this grass and determined the predominant ploidy level for each population. Endophytes were found in four of six, two of three, and one of three populations for Faroe Islands, Iceland and Great Britain, respectively. With an average low incidence level of 15 % in infected populations, there was no relationship between infection level and either latitude or altitude. The phylogenetic analysis based on sequences ITS and the tub2 genes, supports that the endophytic species is EpichloA << festucae, the same as in other fine fescues. We found no variation in ploidy level as all the plants were tetraploid (4X) with 28 chromosomes, a pattern which contrasts with the variation reported in previous antecedents. Our results suggest that apart from low and variable benefits of the endophyte to the plants, there would be a complex dynamics between epichloid endophytes and species of the fine fescue complex which merits further studies.</p
Sources of intrinsic rotation in the low flow ordering
A low flow, gyrokinetic formulation to obtain the intrinsic
rotation profiles is presented. The momentum conservation equation in the low
flow ordering contains new terms, neglected in previous first principles
formulations, that may explain the intrinsic rotation observed in tokamaks in
the absence of external sources of momentum. The intrinsic rotation profile
depends on the density and temperature profiles and on the up-down asymmetry.Comment: 20 page
Effects of a glyphosate-based herbicide on soil animal trophic groups and associated ecosystem functioning in a northern agricultural field
Despite an increasing concern of consequences of using vast amounts of glyphosate-based herbicides in agroecosystems, their potential effects on non-target soil organisms and soil functioning are mostly unknown. It has also been argued that fields in northern latitudes should be under special surveillance as the short active period of decomposers may restrict glyphosate degradation. We investigated the effects of a glyphosate- based herbicide, Roundup, on the abundance of enchytraeids and nematodes, both essential groups in decomposer food webs, and plant litter mass loss and soil availability of mineral N in a two-year agricultural field setting in south-west Finland. Our experiment consisted of (1) non-treated weed plots, (2) plots, where weeds were killed by hoeing, and (3) plots treated with both Roundup and hoeing. We found that killing plants by hoeing had drastic effects on soil fauna and functioning, and apparently, distinguishing these effects from direct glyphosate effects is profoundly important when evaluating glyphosate risks in soils. In contrast, the effects of Roundup on soil fauna and functioning were minor and transient and no glyphosate remains were found in the soil at the end of the experiment. These results suggest that side-effects can be minor and glyphosate degradation effective also in soil under northern climatic conditions
Modification and cross-linking parameters in hyaluronic acid hydrogels—Definitions and analytical methods
AbstractDefinitions and methods for the quantification of degree of modification and cross-linking in cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels are outlined. A novel method is presented in which the HA hydrogel is degraded by the enzyme chondroitinase AC and the digest product analyzed by size exclusion chromatography combined with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SEC–ESI-MS). This method allows for the determination of effective cross-linker ratio (CrR) which together with the degree of modification (MoD), determined by, e.g. 1H NMR spectroscopy, enables the calculation of the degree of substitution (DS) and degree of cross-linking (CrD).The method, could be applicable to the major cross-linked HA hydrogels currently on the market, and is exemplified here by application to two HA hydrogels. The definitions and methods presented are important contributions in attempts to find relationships between MoD, DS and CrD to mechanical properties as well as to biocompatibility of HA hydrogels
Non-destructive controlled single-particle light scattering measurement
We present a set of light scattering data measured from a millimeter-sized extraterrestrial rock sample. The data were acquired by our novel scatterometer, which enables accurate multi-wavelength measure- ments of single-particle samples whose position and orientation are controlled by ultrasonic levitation. The measurements demonstrate a non-destructive approach to derive optical properties of small mineral samples. This enables research on valuable materials, such as those returned from space missions or rare meteorites.Peer reviewe
Understanding the effect of sheared flow on microinstabilities
The competition between the drive and stabilization of plasma
microinstabilities by sheared flow is investigated, focusing on the ion
temperature gradient mode. Using a twisting mode representation in sheared slab
geometry, the characteristic equations have been formulated for a dissipative
fluid model, developed rigorously from the gyrokinetic equation. They clearly
show that perpendicular flow shear convects perturbations along the field at a
speed we denote by (where is the sound speed), whilst parallel
flow shear enters as an instability driving term analogous to the usual
temperature and density gradient effects. For sufficiently strong perpendicular
flow shear, , the propagation of the system characteristics is
unidirectional and no unstable eigenmodes may form. Perturbations are swept
along the field, to be ultimately dissipated as they are sheared ever more
strongly. Numerical studies of the equations also reveal the existence of
stable regions when , where the driving terms conflict. However, in both
cases transitory perturbations exist, which could attain substantial amplitudes
before decaying. Indeed, for , they are shown to exponentiate
times. This may provide a subcritical route to turbulence in
tokamaks.Comment: minor revisions; accepted to PPC
