One of the duties of the MER Managers is getting the consoles to review and sign Electronic Flight Notes (EFN) and Mission Action Requests (Chit) before they are due. Chits and EFNs and are accessible through the Mission Control Center - Houston (MCC-H) Gateway. Chits are the official means of documenting questions and answers, technical direction, real-time changes to Flight Rules (FR) and procedures, request for analysis, etc. between various consoles concerning on-orbit operations. EFNs are documents used by the Flight Control Team (FCT) to communicate precise details between console positions and manage real time changes to FR and Systems Operation Data File (SODF) procedures. On GMT 2013/345 the External Active Thermal Control System (EATCS) on the Columbus (COL) Moderate Temperature Loop (MTL) Interface Heat Exchanger (IFHX) shut down due to low temperatures. Over the next couple of days, the core temperature of COL MT IFHX dropped due to the failure of the Flow Control Valve (FCV). After the temperature drop was discovered, heaters were turned on to bring the temperatures back to nominal. After the incident occurred, a possible freeze threat was discovered that could have ruptured the heat exchanger. The COL MT IFHX rupturing would be considered a catastrophic failure and potentially result in a loss of the vehicle and/or the lives of the International Space Station (ISS) crew member

Variation in the sternal notches of suboscine passeriform birds

The present study was undertaken to record the variations of the posterior border of the sternum of the New World suboscines, in an attempt to determine the reliability of this area of the sternum as a taxonomic character. The conclusions drawn from this survey (of 993 specimens) are that, within a broad range of variants, two basic kinds of sternal configuration are found: two-notched (Types 2-3-4, as defined), and four-notched (Types 5-6). The four-notched sternum is not confined to genera in the Rhinocryptidae and Conopophaga, as previously believed. Variations within the twoand four-notched sterna may not be considered taxonomically significant unless they can be shown to be consistent in a large series of specimens. In no case should a single specimen of a species be assumed to show the only sternal configuration of the species. The possible adaptive significance of the observed range of variation is briefly discussed, but no conclusions may be drawn until a functional analysis of the passerine sternum can be made

The anatomy and systematic position of the antpipits Conopophaga and Corythopis

The anatomical characters of the passerine family Conopophagidae have been reexamined. The sternum, syrinx, tarsus, antorbital osteology and pterylosis of Conopophaga and Corythopis were compared with a broad sample of other suboscines, with particular attention to the Formicariidae and Rhinocryptidae. Conopophaga was found to lie well within the range of variation of the Formicariidae in the principal characters (sternum and syrinx) used by Forbes in describing the Conopophagidae. The key character was the apparent presence in Conopophaga of a four-notched sternum. In nearly all specimens of Conopophaga, however, we found the sternum to have two notches and two large medial fenestrae. The four-notched condition is found in some species of Grallaria and Pittasoma, both considered to be formicariid. In most of the other characters studied also, Conopophaga strongly resembles Grallaria. The genus Corythopis differs from Conopophaga and all other furnarioids in the major diagnostic characters examined. In several respects, particularly the pterylosis and syringeal structure, it shows strong affinities with the Tyrannidae. It is recommended that Conopophaga be returned to its former position, near Grallaria in the Formicariidae. Corythopis must be moved from the Furnarioidea to the Tyrannoidea; its proper position appears to be in the family Tyrannidae

Influence of environmental context on affect recognition of stylized movements

    Get PDF
Modifying the style of movements will be an important component of robotic interaction as more and more robots move into human-facing scenarios where humans are (consciously or unconsciously) constantly monitoring the motion profile of counterparts in order to make judgments about the state of these counterparts. This thesis includes two main contributions: (1) the development of two MATLAB tools that are designed to aid in the creation and simulation of stylized movement trajectories in varied contexts and (2) three user studies that explore the effects of environmental context on a human’s perception of stylized movement. First and foremost, the results from all of the user studies indicate that environmental contexts and stylized walking sequences both impact affect recognition. In the first two studies, participants were asked to categorize stimuli as one of seven affective labels. The results show that the labels were not applied consistently and so it was concluded that the affect of a multi-dimensional stimuli cannot be adequately categorized using a single affective label. In the third study the stimuli were evaluated on multiple scales and classified using ratings of valence and arousal rather than affective labels. The results were used to create a least squares model for the dataset that decomposed the affect ratings of animations to display the compound effects of stylized walking sequences and environmental contexts on affective ratings

A Remembrance Fund for ‘Tyrolean Folk Culture’? e Ploner-Debate (2011–2014) as Impulse and Restraint for a Research Project on Folk Costumes in Tyrol

This article features and interprets the ‘Ploner-Debate’, a public debate in Tyrol and South Tyrol, that focussed on the interdependencies between ‘folk culture’ (‘Volkskultur’) and NS-ideology in historical perspective and the contemporary dealing with this ‘brown heritage’ in political and public contexts. As one important result of this debate, the provincial government of Tyrol initiated research projects on this topic, among them one about the Intermediate Post for ‘German Folk Costume’ (Mittelstelle ‘Deutsche Tracht’) in Innsbruck (1939–1945), its head Gertrud Pesendorfer and its effects up to today. By reconstructing the debate, this article explains the background, aims and challenges of a research project about folk costumes in the context of current discussions around ‘folk culture’ (‘Volkskultur’) in European Ethnology.
