    From racist violence to re-humanization, mattering, and nonviolence : an analysis of the normative reasoning, communication, and resonance of Black Lives Matter in the wake of the death of George Floyd

    Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a leading force in the struggle for a re-humanization of Black lives. After George Floyd was brutally murdered by a police officer in the summer of 2020, BLM called for the mattering of Black lives and won increasing public support for its protests against the persistent police and state violence that disproportionately affect Black people. The aim of this Master Thesis research was to understand the normative reasoning, communication, and resonance of BLM, with particular attention to how these were evident in the wake of the death of George Floyd. Using a qualitative, grounded theory approach, online sources were analyzed in order to document, interpret and explain the normative views and positions of BLM; to show how these were communicated to advance a re-humanization of Black lives; and to explain how BLM’s thinking and strategy resonated in public discourse, meeting both support and resistance. The analysis and discussion were informed by two closely related perspectives on re-humanization, namely mattering and nonviolence. First, I demonstrate how BLM normative views and positions emphasized the lack of mattering extended to Black lives and opposed the violence that results from, and perpetuates, this unequal mattering. In this way, BLM insisted that an extension of mattering to include Black lives was necessary for re-humanization and racial equality. Further, I show how BLM communicated its demands through social media, direct action, and popular culture. I argue that through these forms of communication, BLM concretized its normative reasoning as the movement 1) embraced the rage that results from unequal mattering and practices of violence that distinguish between lives that matter and lives that do not, and 2) turned this rage into effective, nonviolent action through physically asserting claims to mattering. I explain how BLM thinking, strategy, and messaging evoked support across a broader public discourse than ever before, while also triggering various forms of social and official resistance. I conclude that, through its normative thinking and strategic communication in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, BLM successfully advanced a re-humanization of Black lives.M-I

    The Clinicians’ Skills, Capability, and Organisational Research Readiness (SCORR) Tool

    A research-active healthcare workforce contributes to improved quality of care. Clinicians may be unaware that they are applying early research skills during their everyday practice. Greater understanding of their level of research attainment may improve their awareness and confidence in their research skills. This article describes the development of the Clinicians Skills, Capability, and Organisational Research Readiness (SCORR) Tool, a simple innovation that assesses and captures research skills and attainment at 1) clinician, and 2) organisational level. The SCORR Tool was initially developed to assess levels of research attainment and to promote discussion during annual appraisals for podiatrists working across secondary and community care in a northern region of England. The levels (1 to 5) of attainment recognise UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration requirements for chiropodists/podiatrists (Standards 12 to 14). Following testing and feedback, research levels were adapted (Levels 0 to 5) to accommodate all healthcare professionals (with the exception of doctors and dentists). The SCORR Tool may be used individually by clinicians, or in collaboration with their manager, to better understand the level of research attainment and to prompt discussion to increase research activity. It may also be used across a workforce (e.g. during an appraisal) to understand the organisational research readiness. The SCORR Tool requires additional testing and evaluation to validate it as a tool for use across a variety of organisational environments

    Quantum phase space picture of Bose-Einstein Condensates in a double well: Proposals for creating macroscopic quantum superposition states and a study of quantum chaos

    We present a quantum phase space model of Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a double well potential. In a two-mode Fock-state analysis we examine the eigenvectors and eigenvalues and find that the energy correlation diagram indicates a transition from a delocalized to a fragmented regime. Phase space information is extracted from the stationary quantum states using the Husimi distribution function. It is shown that the quantum states are localized on the known classical phase space orbits of a nonrigid physical pendulum, and thus the novel phase space characteristics of a nonrigid physical pendulum such as the π\pi motions are seen to be a property of the exact quantum states. Low lying states are harmonic oscillator like libration states while the higher lying states are Schr\"odinger cat-like superpositions of two pendulum rotor states. To study the dynamics in phase space, a comparison is made between a displaced quantum wavepacket and the trajectories of a swarm of points in classical phase space. For a driven double well, it is shown that the classical chaotic dynamics is manifest in the dynamics of the quantum states pictured using the Husimi distribution. Phase space analogy also suggests that a π\pi phase displaced wavepacket put on the unstable fixed point on a separatrix will bifurcate to create a superposition of two pendulum rotor states - a Schr\"odinger cat state (number entangled state) for BEC. It is shown that the choice of initial barrier height and ramping, following a π\pi phase imprinting on the condensate, can be used to generate controlled entangled number states with tunable extremity and sharpness.Comment: revised version, 13 pages, 13 figure

    The research reported here was part of a large study of the impact of age, disability, race and sex on the teaching profession in England. The basic question asked in this research was how do these factors interact with career aspirations and achievements of classteachers, promoted teachers and headteachers? There were three different data sources: a large postal survey drawn from diverse geographic regions across England with over 2000 respondents; face‐to‐face individual interviews with over 100 teachers in 18 case study schools from across all of the main regions of England; discussions with special interest groups of teachers. Not surprisingly, the answer to the above question was complex. Nonetheless, the paper's conclusion highlights some of the noteworthy themes across this broad sample of teachers from primary, secondary and special schools

    Prescription Drug Diversion: Predictors of Illicit Acquisition and Redistribution in Three U.S. Metropolitan Areas

    Objective: Prescription drug diversion, the transfer of prescription drugs from lawful to unlawful channels for distribution or use, is a problem in the United States. Despite the pervasiveness of diversion, there are gaps in the literature regarding characteristics of individuals who participate in the illicit trade of prescription drugs. This study examines a range of predictors (e.g., demographics, prescription insurance coverage, perceived risk associated with prescription drug diversion) of membership in three distinct diverter groups: individuals who illicitly acquire prescription drugs, those who redistribute them, and those who engage in both behaviors. Methods: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional Internet 763 AIMS Public Health Volume 2, Issue 4, 762-783. study (N = 846) of prescription drug use and diversion patterns in New York City, South Florida, and Washington, D.C.. Participants were classified into diversion categories based on their self-reported involvement in the trade of prescription drugs. Group differences in background characteristics of diverter groups were assessed by Chi-Square tests and followed up with multivariate logistic regressions. Results: While individuals in all diversion groups were more likely to be younger and have a licit prescription for any of the assessed drugs in the past year than those who did not divert, individuals who both acquire and redistribute are more likely to live in New York City, not have prescription insurance coverage, and perceive fewer legal risks of prescription drug diversion. Conclusion: Findings suggest that predictive characteristics vary according to diverter group

    Preparation and PET/CT imaging of implant directed 68Ga-labeled magnetic nanoporous silica nanoparticles

    Background: Implant infections caused by biofilm forming bacteria are a major threat in orthopedic surgery. Delivering antibiotics directly to an implant affected by a bacterial biofilm via superparamagnetic nanoporous silica nanoparticles could present a promising approach. Nevertheless, short blood circulation half-life because of rapid interactions of nanoparticles with the host’s immune system hinder them from being clinically used. The aim of this study was to determine the temporal in vivo resolution of magnetic nanoporous silica nanoparticle (MNPSNP) distribution and the effect of PEGylation and clodronate application using PET/CT imaging and gamma counting in an implant mouse model. Methods: PEGylated and non-PEGylated MNPSNPs were radiolabeled with gallium-68 (68Ga), implementing the chelator tris(hydroxypyridinone). 36 mice were included in the study, 24 mice received a magnetic implant subcutaneously on the left and a titanium implant on the right hind leg. MNPSNP pharmacokinetics and implant accumulation was analyzed in dependence on PEGylation and additional clodronate application. Subsequently gamma counting was performed for further final analysis. Results: The pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of all radiolabeled nanoparticles could clearly be visualized and followed by dynamic PET/CT imaging. Both variants of 68Ga-labeled MNPSNP accumulated mainly in liver and spleen. PEGylation of the nanoparticles already resulted in lower liver uptakes. Combination with macrophage depletion led to a highly significant effect whereas macrophage depletion alone could not reveal significant differences. Although MNPSNP accumulation around implants was low in comparison to the inner organs in PET/CT imaging, gamma counting displayed a significantly higher %I.D./g for the tissue surrounding the magnetic implants compared to the titanium control. Additional PEGylation and/or macrophage depletion revealed no significant differences regarding nanoparticle accumulation at the implantation site. Conclusion: Tracking of 68Ga-labeled nanoparticles in a mouse model in the first critical hours post-injection by PET/CT imaging provided a better understanding of MNPSNP distribution, elimination and accumulation. Although PEGylation increases circulation time, nanoparticle accumulation at the implantation site was still insufficient for infection treatment and additional efforts are needed to increase local accumulation
