    Global patterns in seagrass herbivory: Why, despite existing evidence, there are solid arguments in favor of latitudinal gradients in seagrass herbivory

The ecological paradigm that biological interactions are more intense in the tropics than in temperate or polar regions has existed since the mid-twentieth century, but several recent meta-analyses have provided scant evidence for latitudinal gradients in the intensity of herbivory. This contradictory evidence led us to carefully review the data and results of several of those papers that failed to find latitudinal gradients in rates of seagrass herbivory. To re-evaluate the arguments around the presence or absence of latitudinal gradients in herbivory in seagrass, we began by expanding the selection criteria to include more studies to compare the published latitudinal range of seagrass occurrences with the latitudes in which seagrass herbivory has been studied. We also compared the latitudinal range of known seagrass herbivores with the distribution of studies on seagrass herbivory. Finally, we investigated studies that provided seasonal data on net primary production and standing stock of seagrasses, which allowed an assessment of the relative amounts of production that could enter the seagrass grazing food web among latitudes and climatic regimes. Consistent with recent meta-analyses, we found little latitudinal effect on grazing rates. However, we argue that the following factors are likely to confound these findings and potentially mask latitudinal trends in seagrass herbivory: (1) the paucity of data available to test latitudinal trends in grazing rates at high latitudes; (2) the mismatch between the geographic distribution of important grazers and studies on seagrass herbivory; (3) the paucity of experimental studies from areas with little or no herbivory because few researchers would initiate a study on something not observed to be occurring; (4) the high level of seasonality in seagrass production in high latitudes, where seagrass production is very low or nonexistent in winter months; (5) the fact that temperate areas with Mediterranean climates behave very differently than temperate areas at similar latitudes with much greater seasonality, thereby making latitude a much less informative independent variable than annual range in temperature; and (6) anthropogenic disturbances, including the overharvesting to functional extinction of large seagrass herbivores in both temperate and tropical regions. Thus, while we currently cannot discount the lack of a latitudinal gradient in grazing intensity, we argue that the intensity of grazing is likely to be greater in the tropics than high-latitude regions where the carrying capacity of seagrass meadows is far less stable. Either way, there are clear gaps in our knowledge and ability to evaluate the role of grazing in seagrass ecosystems and inform future efforts to conserve and restore these extraordinarily valuable ecosystems

    Plantas medicinais utilizadas pelos octogenários e nonagenários de uma vila periférica de Rio Grande/RS, Brasil.

    Objetivo: resgatar o conhecimento de práticas de utilização de plantas medicinais de uma população idosa de Rio Grande/RS. Metodologia: estudo qualitativo, vinculado ao projeto ?Plantas bioativas de uso humano por famílias de agricultores de base ecológica na região Sul (RS)?, submetido ao Comitê de Ética da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal de Pelotas, protocolo 072/2007. A coleta de dados ocorreu de abril a julho de 2010. Os sujeitos foram selecionados através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas pela equipe de Saúde da Família, ambos da periferia de Rio Grande/RS. Apenas 12 dos 36 octogenários e nonagenários entrevistados haviam desenvolvido atividades agrícolas. Resultados: foram citadas 34 plantas medicinais, muitas delas são para curar resfriados. Em 28 observações, a folha foi a parte mais citada. Conclusão: é importante resgatar estas informações dos idosos, pois elas podem perder-se caso eles venham a falecer e não relatem estes saberes

    Fermion Quasi-Spherical Harmonics

    Spherical Harmonics, Ym(θ,ϕ)Y_\ell^m(\theta,\phi), are derived and presented (in a Table) for half-odd-integer values of \ell and mm. These functions are eigenfunctions of L2L^2 and LzL_z written as differential operators in the spherical-polar angles, θ\theta and ϕ\phi. The Fermion Spherical Harmonics are a new, scalar and angular-coordinate-dependent representation of fermion spin angular momentum. They have 4π4\pi symmetry in the angle ϕ\phi, and hence are not single-valued functions on the Euclidean unit sphere; they are double-valued functions on the sphere, or alternatively are interpreted as having a double-sphere as their domain.Comment: 16 pages, 2 Tables.     New attempts to understand nanodiamond stardust

    We report on a concerted effort aimed at understanding the origin and history of the pre-solar nanodiamonds in meteorites including the astrophysical sources of the observed isotopic abundance signatures. This includes measurement of light elements by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), analysis of additional heavy trace elements by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and dynamic calculations of r-process nucleosynthesis with updated nuclear properties. Results obtained indicate: a) there is no evidence for the former presence of now extinct 26Al and 44Ti in our diamond samples other than what can be attributed to silicon carbide and other "impurities"; this does not offer support for a supernova (SN) origin but neither does it negate it; b) analysis by AMS of platinum in "bulk diamond" yields an overabundance of r-only 198Pt that at face value seems more consistent with the neutron burst than with the separation model for the origin of heavy trace elements in the diamonds, although this conclusion is not firm given analytical uncertainties; c) if the Xe-H pattern was established by an unadulterated r-process, it must have been a strong variant of the main r-process, which possibly could also account for the new observations in platinum.Comment: Workshop on Astronomy with Radioactvities VII; Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, accepte

    Human primary endothelial cells are impaired in nucleotide excision repair and sensitive to benzo[a]pyrene compared with smooth muscle cells and pericytes

    The endothelium represents the inner cell layer of blood vessels and is supported by smooth muscle cells and pericytes, which form the vessel structure. The endothelium is involved in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including the development of atherosclerosis. Due to direct blood contact, the blood vessel endothelium is inevitably exposed to genotoxic substances that are systemically taken up by the body, including benzo[a]pyrene, which is a major genotoxic component in cigarette smoke and a common environmental mutagen and human carcinogen. Here, we evaluated the impact of benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide (BPDE), which is the reactive metabolite of benzo[a]pyrene, on the three innermost vessel cell types. Primary human endothelial cells (HUVEC), primary human smooth muscle cells (HUASMC) and primary human pericytes (HPC) were treated with BPDE, and analyses of cytotoxicity, cellular senescence and genotoxic effects were then performed. The results showed that HUVEC were more sensitive to the cytotoxic activity of BPDE than HUASMC and HPC. We further show that HUVEC display a detraction in the repair of BPDE-induced adducts, as determined through the comet assay and the quantification of BPDE adducts in post-labelling experiments. A screening for DNA repair factors revealed that the nucleotide excision repair (NER) proteins ERCC1, XPF and ligase I were expressed at lower levels in HUVEC compared with HUASMC and HPC, which corresponds with the impaired NER-mediated removal of BPDE adducts from DNA. Taken together, the data revealed that HUVEC exhibit an unexpected DNA repair-impaired phenotype, which has implications on the response of the endothelium to genotoxicants that induce bulky DNA lesions, including the development of vascular diseases resulting from smoking and environmental pollution

    Modeling of mode-locking in a laser with spatially separate gain media

    We present a novel laser mode-locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers three significant benefits: the light that is amplified in each medium is continuous wave, thereby avoiding issues related to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects that can perturb the pulse shape. The set of frequencies on which the laser oscillates, and therefore the pulse repetition rate, is controlled by the geometry of resonator-internal optical elements, not by the cavity length. Finally, the bandwidth of the laser can be controlled by switching gain modules on and off. This scheme offers a route to mode-locked lasers with high average output power, repetition rates that can be scaled into the THz range, and a bandwidth that can be dynamically controlled.     Transducer Placement for Broadband Active Vibration Control Using a Novel Multidimensional QR Factorization

    Introduction Active vibration control represents the state of the art in reducing unwanted vibrations in structures. A current focus of research in the area is the development of smart materials that can automatically sense and then control vibrations induced from external disturbances. Smart materials for vibration control applications typically consist of embedded sensors, actuators, communication channels, and processors that have been programmed to implement the prescribed control law with the available transducers. However, current control algorithms cannot effectively deal with large system configurations (many sensors and actuators resulting in too many interconnections). Thus, subsets of transducers are often employed to achieve the desired control. Many of these presume the existence of a control configuration (i.e., layout of the sensors and actuators and the interconnections between them) or use ad-hoc methods to specify one, and focus instead on the design of the best control law. This is in spite of the fact that the complexity and performance of a control system are largely determined by the underlying control configuration Recent work in transducer selection algorithms can be broadly grouped into two approaches.
