    A QM/MM approach for the study of monolayer-protected gold clusters

    We report the development and implementation of hybrid methods that combine quantum mechanics (QM) with molecular mechanics (MM) to theoretically characterize thiolated gold clusters. We use, as training systems, structures such as Au25(SCH2-R)18 and Au38(SCH2-R)24, which can be readily compared with recent crystallographic data. We envision that such an approach will lead to an accurate description of key structural and electronic signatures at a fraction of the cost of a full quantum chemical treatment. As an example, we demonstrate that calculations of the 1H and 13C NMR shielding constants with our proposed QM/MM model maintain the qualitative features of a full DFT calculation, with an order-of-magnitude increase in computational efficiency.Comment: Journal of Materials Science, 201

    First enantioseparation and circular dichroism spectra of Au38 clusters protected by achiral ligands

    Bestowing chirality to metals is central in fields such as heterogeneous catalysis and modern optics. Although the bulk phase of metals is symmetric, their surfaces can become chiral through adsorption of molecules. Interestingly, even achiral molecules can lead to locally chiral, though globally racemic, surfaces. A similar situation can be obtained for metal particles or clusters. Here we report the first separation of the enantiomers of a gold cluster protected by achiral thiolates, Au38(SCH2CH2Ph)24, achieved by chiral high-performance liquid chromatography. The chirality of the nanocluster arises from the chiral arrangement of the thiolates on its surface, forming 'staple motifs'. The enantiomers show mirror-image circular dichroism responses and large anisotropy factors of up to 4×10−3. Comparison with reported circular dichroism spectra of other Au38 clusters reveals that the influence of the ligand on the chiroptical properties is minor

    Synthesis and Visible-Light Photocatalytic Property of Bi2WO6Hierarchical Octahedron-Like Structures

    A novel octahedron-like hierarchical structure of Bi2WO6has been fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method in high quantity. XRD, SEM, TEM, and HRTEM were used to characterize the product. The results indicated that this kind of Bi2WO6crystals had an average size of ~4 μm, constructed by quasi-square single-crystal nanosheets assembled in a special fashion. The formation of octahedron-like hierarchical structure of Bi2WO6depended crucially on the pH value of the precursor suspensions. The photocatalytic activity of the hierarchical Bi2WO6structures toward RhB degradation under visible light was investigated, and it was found to be significantly better than that of the sample fabricated by SSR. The better photocatalytic property should be strongly associated with the high specific surface area and the abundant pore structure of the hierarchical octahedron-like Bi2WO6

    Psychosocial interventions for patients with advanced cancer – a systematic review of the literature

    Advanced cancer is associated with emotional distress, especially depression and feelings of sadness. To date, it is unclear which is the most effective way to address these problems. This review focuses on the effects of psychosocial interventions on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with advanced cancer. It was hypothesised that patients will benefit from psychosocial interventions by improving QoL, especially in the domain of emotional functioning. The review was conducted using systematic review methodology involving a systematic search of the literature published between 1990 and 2002, quality assessment of included studies, systematic data extraction and narrative data synthesis. In all, 10 randomised controlled studies involving 13 trials were included. Overall interventions and outcome measures across studies were heterogeneous. Outcome measures, pertaining to the QoL dimension of emotional functioning, were most frequently measured. A total of 12 trials evaluating behaviour therapy found positive effects on one or more indicators of QoL, for example, depression. The results of the review support recommendation of behaviour therapy in the care of patients with advanced cancer

    Effects of cultivation on soil and soil water under different fertiliser regimes

    Nutrient exports from agriculture are an important environmental issue in many countries. In some production systems phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) accumulate at or near the soil surface and cultivation is one option for addressing the legacies of previous nutrient applications. This study aimed to compare the effects of cultivation (mouldboard ploughing), pasture type (ryegrass or ryegrass-clover) and P fertiliser application rate (10, 35 or 100. kg P/ha per annum) on P and N in soil and soil water from dairy pastures over a three year period. The results are generally consistent with inversion of organic matter and P rich surface soil (i.e. 0-140. mm). Cultivation lowered surface soil (0-20. mm) P and N concentrations. Surface soil P concentrations also increased with increasing P fertiliser rate but organic matter and P buffering did not. The effects of vegetation were more equivocal. Ploughing lowered most P and N species in surface soil water. The concentrations of P in soil water increased with increasing fertiliser rates as did ammonia concentrations where pastures included clovers. Analyses of trends with time suggests that, for pasture re-establishment, cultivation reduced the risk of N exports through surface pathways. Moreover, analyses of P export risk measured as the dissolved reactive P concentration in surface soil water (0-20. mm) suggests that where there is no predisposition to erosion, mouldboard ploughing not only reduces the risks of P exports, but that effect is likely to be more enduring where paddocks are in positive P balance. It follows that the use of cultivation as part of pasture renovation activities may reduce catchment-scale P exports, particularly in critical source areas where the risks of erosion and subsurface exports of N are low. © 2014 Elsevier B.V

    Physicochemical properties and trace organic compounds in a dairy processor's aerobic bioreactor

    Wastewater samples were taken from an aerobic bioreactor, operated by a dairy processor in southeastern Australia to reduce nutrient and pollutant loads. Samples were taken over a two-year period, to determine whether trace organic compounds or physicochemical analyses of the wastewater could be used to discriminate the water taken before, during and after processing of the wastewater in the bioreactor. Multivariate analyses of the physicochemical data suggested that nitrate, pH and total dissolved nitrogen best described the infeed wastewater entering the bioreactor, while organic and particulate phosphorus concentrations where predominantly responsible for describing the composition of the content of the bioreactor. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry data of organic compounds within the wastewater samples were also analysed via multivariate analyses. The analyses found that the compound 4-nitrophenol was associated with ammonia concentrations and mixed liquor wastewater. Therefore, 4-nitrophenol may possibly be used to act as an indicator of anaerobicity in aerobic bioreactors
