    On the interactions between molecules in an off-resonant laser beam:Evaluating the response to energy migration and optically induced pair forces

    Electronically excited molecules interact with their neighbors differently from their ground-state counterparts. Any migration of the excitation between molecules can modify intermolecular forces, reflecting changes to a local potential energy landscape. It emerges that throughput off-resonant radiation can also produce significant additional effects. The context for the present analysis of the mechanisms is a range of chemical and physical processes that fundamentally depend on intermolecular interactions resulting from second and fourth-order electric-dipole couplings. The most familiar are static dipole-dipole interactions, resonance energy transfer (both second-order interactions), and dispersion forces (fourth order). For neighboring molecules subjected to off-resonant light, additional forms of intermolecular interaction arise in the fourth order, including radiation-induced energy transfer and optical binding. Here, in a quantum electrodynamical formulation, these phenomena are cast in a unified description that establishes their inter-relationship and connectivity at a fundamental level. Theory is then developed for systems in which the interplay of these forms of interaction can be readily identified and analyzed in terms of dynamical behavior. The results are potentially significant in Förster measurements of conformational change and in the operation of microelectromechanical and nanoelectromechanical devices. © 2009 American Institute of Physics

    Parliamentary web presence: a comparative review

    Parliamentary web presence is seen as a tool designed to buttress a range of key parliamentary functions operating within an overarching democratic framework. Many governments have embarked upon ambitious e-government programmes in the hope of increasing participation. However, there is now a growing realisation that e-government strategies have not achieved the hoped-for success and there is an increasing body of research concerned with analysing these problems. This paper seeks to add to this body of research and draws upon insights provided by usability studies developed to provide an analysis of various parliament websites. It also compares how parliaments of several countries use ICT to increase transparency and to facilitate participation of citizens. As such it is the first of its kind to undertake work of this nature. The paper concludes by arguing for a usability framework for analysing the effectiveness of e-parliaments. This could be used by e-government web designers and architects alike to identify weaknesses, within a specific area, of both the form and content of their parliament and other e-government websites

    Distance-generalized Core Decomposition

    The kk-core of a graph is defined as the maximal subgraph in which every vertex is connected to at least kk other vertices within that subgraph. In this work we introduce a distance-based generalization of the notion of kk-core, which we refer to as the (k,h)(k,h)-core, i.e., the maximal subgraph in which every vertex has at least kk other vertices at distance h\leq h within that subgraph. We study the properties of the (k,h)(k,h)-core showing that it preserves many of the nice features of the classic core decomposition (e.g., its connection with the notion of distance-generalized chromatic number) and it preserves its usefulness to speed-up or approximate distance-generalized notions of dense structures, such as hh-club. Computing the distance-generalized core decomposition over large networks is intrinsically complex. However, by exploiting clever upper and lower bounds we can partition the computation in a set of totally independent subcomputations, opening the door to top-down exploration and to multithreading, and thus achieving an efficient algorithm

    It takes one to know one: Relationship between lie detection and psychopathy

    We investigated primary and secondary psychopathy and the ability to detect high-stakes, real-life emotional lies in an on-line experiment (N = 150). Using signal detection analysis, we found that lie detection ability was overall above chance level, there was a tendency towards responding liberally to the test stimuli, and women were more accurate than men Further, sex moderated the relationship between psychopathy and lie detection ability; in men, primary psychopathy had a significant positive correlation with the ability to detect lies, whereas in women there was a significant negative correlation with deception detection. The results are discussed with reference to evolutionary theory and sex differences in processing socio-emotional information

    We generalize the surface growth model of Gates and Westcott to arbitrary inclination. The exact steady growth velocity is of saddle type with principal curvatures of opposite sign.     Upper critical dimension, dynamic exponent and scaling functions in the mode-coupling theory for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

    We study the mode-coupling approximation for the KPZ equation in the strong coupling regime. By constructing an ansatz consistent with the asymptotic forms of the correlation and response functions we determine the upper critical dimension d_c=4, and the expansion z=2-(d-4)/4+O((4-d)^2) around d_c. We find the exact z=3/2 value in d=1, and estimate the values 1.62, 1.78 for z, in d=2,3. The result d_c=4 and the expansion around d_c are very robust and can be derived just from a mild assumption on the relative scale on which the response and correlation functions vary as z approaches 2.Comment: RevTex, 4 page

    Numerical Results for the Ground-State Interface in a Random Medium

    The problem of determining the ground state of a dd-dimensional interface embedded in a (d+1)(d+1)-dimensional random medium is treated numerically. Using a minimum-cut algorithm, the exact ground states can be found for a number of problems for which other numerical methods are inexact and slow. In particular, results are presented for the roughness exponents and ground-state energy fluctuations in a random bond Ising model. It is found that the roughness exponent ζ=0.41±0.01,0.22±0.01\zeta = 0.41 \pm 0.01, 0.22 \pm 0.01, with the related energy exponent being θ=0.84±0.03,1.45±0.04\theta = 0.84 \pm 0.03, 1.45 \pm 0.04, in d=2,3d = 2, 3, respectively.     Treating hummingbirds as feathered bees : a case of ethological cross-pollination

    Hummingbirds feed from hundreds of flowers every day. The properties of these flowers provide these birds with a wealth of information about colour, space and time to guide how they forage. To understand how hummingbirds might use this information, researchers have adapted established laboratory paradigms for use in the field. In recent years, however, experimental inspiration has come less from other birds, and more from looking at other nectar-feeders, particularly honeybees and bumblebees, which have been models for foraging behaviour and cognition for over a century. In a world in which the cognitive abilities of bees regularly make the news, research on the influence of ecology and sensory systems on bee behaviour is leading to novel insights in hummingbird cognition. As methods designed to study insects in the laboratory are being applied to hummingbirds in the field, converging methods can help us identify and understand convergence in cognition, behaviour and ecology.PostprintPeer reviewe
