Mrs. Haygood is a black, middle-aged wife and mother who came to Savannah when segregation was at its height. I remember the time when the boycott was on Broughton Street we would have sit-ins there and a lot of my people was hurt. A lot of police here were brutal to them. And I didn\u27t like the idea of them putting gas and water hoses on our people.https://digitalcommons.georgiasouthern.edu/happiness-lane/1010/thumbnail.jp

TRADITIONALLY EXCLUSIVE LIMITATIONS IN THE DIGITAL ERA:THE LIMITATIONS ON THE STATE ACTION DOCTRINE AND ITS INABILITY TO PROTECT PERSONAL FREEDOMS FROM BIG TECH

    Get PDF
The intersection of censorship, free speech, and big tech is area of growing concern and interest. Every year, millions of users turn to social media platforms for myriad reasons, whether it be for the latest headline news, to pick up a recipe for dinner, or to share thoughts, feelings, or opinions. Yet despite the prevalence and importance of both Big Tech and social media platforms within our daily lives, there is very little anyone can do when their voice is silenced in the digital world. This Article focuses on one method claimants have attempted to use in order to find judicial redress for their stifled speech, the state action doctrine, and then explains why it is ultimately an inadequate methodology that is. The first part of this Article focuses on the historical applications of the state action doctrine and attempts to explain the judicial limitations the Court has imposed on it. The second part of this Article looks at modern cases that have attempted to use the state action doctrine as a means of redressing perceived harms inflicted by Big Tech along with how the same judicial constraints found in traditional cases prevent its modern application. The third part of this article suggests an administrative remedy along with a revival and modern application of the fairness doctrine. Alternatively, in the absence of direct congressional action, this Article finally suggests the creation of a private cause of action similar to that found in the Fair Debt Collections Practice Act

The Battle To Authenticate \u27The Gospel of Thomas\u27

    Get PDF
Many early Christian sects were aware of and accepted The Gospel of Thomas as authentic Christian scripture, despite its unorthodox, radical doctrine, igniting an ideological battle in and around the Thomasine communities of the ancient world. This ideological war is still raging and conflict renewed and amplified with the discoveries of the Greek and Coptic texts of The Gospel of Thomas in the first half of the 20th Century. Since it’s discovery, The Gospel of Thomas has presented scholars with ferocious debate, as serious probability exists that Thomas preserves an older tradition of the historical Jesus than that of the Synoptic Gospels. Though the fierce theological battle of religious scholars in the 1990s hardly sparked The Gospel of Thomas debate, their combined research has renewed questions of how to validate Thomas, and thus, Jesus scholarship over the last half century has been restrained in the use and acceptance of Thomas. Failure of modern scholars to develop a shared understanding of the proper role of The Gospel in reconstructing Christian origins underscores the importance of accurately dating documents from antiquity. Progress in Thomasine studies requires exploration of how texts and traditions were transmitted and appropriated in the ancient world. The greatest contribution of Thomas’ discovery will be to deepen knowledge and understanding of early Christianity. The Gospel clearly bares witness to an independent branch within early Christianity and is a prime example of the diversity of the early Christian Church.

The Experiences of Black Women Pursuing Advanced Degrees in STEM

    Get PDF
Black women are severely underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. While the underrepresentation of professional Black women in STEM has been well-researched, the pipeline problem of the education of Black women in STEM has been overlooked. The number of Black women pursuing STEM degrees dramatically decreases as the level of education increases. This gap in the literature is problematic, because Black women are still severely underrepresented in STEM-focused advanced degree programs. A small but growing literature indicates that Black women tend to experience frequent forms of discrimination, feelings of isolation and less satisfaction with their graduate programs, and devaluation from their peers and faculty. Recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and national social unrest are exacerbating and introducing new stressors and institutional barriers for Black women graduate students in STEM projects. The purpose of this exploratory interview study is to identify the challenges that Black women graduate students in STEM fields are facing in their program studies while navigating life and school through the COVID-19 pandemic and massive racial injustice and social unrest. Featuring a short online survey and in-depth interviews, this study aims to identify how universities and faculty can better support Black women graduate students. This research is still in progress so preliminary results will be provided

Creating, Planning, and Implementing Community Arts Programs for the 21st Century Adolescent from a Nonprofit Perspective

    Get PDF
This thesis examined adolescent behaviors, attitudes, and habits as motivators for creating nonprofit youth programs in the 21 51 century. A literature review, interviews with arts leaders, and a case study showed that children ages 10 to18 have access to a variety of after-school programming in local and national organizations. Three local leaders provided insight into the strengths and weaknesses of programs they directed in Charlotte, North Carolina. The youth forums presented in the case study were designed to provide an environment of trust, stability, and structure. The literature review, the interviews, and the case study all showed that the main challenges for these programs came from funding sources, program locations, and community involvement. The study indicated the need for today\u27s arts organizations, coordinators, and schools to come together in order to create programs that address, assess, and serve the needs of 21st century adolescents

Throughout the world, obesity is increasing as a public health issue. Specifically, in Spain, which is on the rise for childhood obesity. It is reported that around 1/3 of children in Spain have an excess of weight. Part of this high rate of obesity can be attributed to the high income status. This exposes the population to activities and habits that may lead to poor lifestyle choices. For example, the access to television can decrease activity in children as well as access to fast food can allow for poor nutritional habits
