Fine Structure Discussion of Parity-Nonconserving Neutron Scattering at Epithermal Energies
The large magnitude and the sign correlation effect in the parity
non-conserving resonant scattering of epithermal neutrons from Th is
discussed in terms of a non-collective local doorway model. General
conclusions are drawn as to the probability of finding large parity violation

The effect of the annealing temperature on the local distortion of LaCaMnO thin films
Mn -edge fluorescence data are presented for thin film samples (3000~\AA)
of Colossal Magnetoresistive (CMR) LaCaMnO: as-deposited,
and post-annealed at 1000 K and 1200 K. The local distortion is analyzed in
terms of three contributions: static, phonon, and an extra,
temperature-dependent, polaron term. The polaron distortion is very small for
the as-deposited sample and increases with the annealing temperature. In
contrast, the static distortion in the samples decreases with the annealing
temperature. Although the local structure of the as-deposited sample shows very
little temperature dependence, the change in resistivity with temperature is
the largest of these three thin film samples. The as-deposited sample also has
the highest magnetoresistance (MR), which indicates some other mechanism may
also contribute to the transport properties of CMR samples. We also discuss the

Light-Weight Containment for High Energy, Rotating Machines
Developed a lightweight containment system for high-speed composite rotors. The containment device, consisting of a rotatable, composite structure, has been demonstrated to contain the high-energy release from a rotor burst event and is applicable to composite rotors for pulsed power applications. The most important aspect of this design is that the free-floating containment structure dissipates the major loads (radial, torque, and axial) encountered during the burst event, greatly reducing the loads that pass through the stator structure to its attachments. The design results in significant system-level weight savings for the entire rotating machine when compared to a system with an all-metallic containment. Of equal interest to the containment design, the experimental design and instrumentation was very challenging and resulted in significant lessons learned. This paper describes the containment system design, rotor burst test setup, instrumentation for measuring loads induced by the burst event, and a detailed explanation of the successful containment test results and conclusions.Center for Electromechanic
Coping with the effects of fear of failure in young elite athletes
Coping with stress is an important element in effective functioning at the elite level in sports, and fear of failure (FF) is an example of a stressor that athletes experience. Three issues underpin the present preliminary study. First, the prevalence of problems attributed to FF in achievement settings. Second, sport is a popular and significant achievement domain for children and adolescents. Third, there is a lack of research on FF in sport among this population. Therefore, the objectives of the study were to examine the effects of FF on young athletes and to find out their coping responses to the effects of FF. Interviews were conducted individually with nine young elite athÂletes (5 males, 4 females; ages 14-17 years). It was inferred from the data that FF affected the athletes' well-being, interpersonal behavior, sport performance, and schoolwork. The athletes employed a combination of problem-focused, emotion-foÂcused, and avoidance-focused coping strategies, with avoidance strategies being the most frequently reported

Design and analysis of a 20 MW propulsion power train
The electric ship research program at the University of Texas at Austin focuses on the development of power system technology for future electric ships. The main goal of the on-going research activity is to identify critical, high pay-off technology development needed to enable major improvement, in size and functionality, of navy ships power systems. Initial efforts were directed towards the establishment of a baseline power train which highlights various constraints and provides a basis for later optimization efforts. A 20 MW power train system was chosen for such a baseline, and all components, from fuel to propulsion motor, were considered and their impact on the whole power system assessed. The baseline design consists of a 25 MVA/3600 rpm radial flux permanent magnet generator, a 22 MVA PWM converter, and a 20 MW/150 rpm radial flux permanent magnet motor, along with the amount of fuel sized for an assumed mission profile, and the widely used LM2500 gas turbine. The analysis shows that fuel is by far the dominant component contributing to weight and volume and, consequently, overall efficiency of power train components is the most relevant parameter to reduce weight and volume. The 3600 rpm generator is the smallest component. The 150 rpm motor is the heaviest component, other than fuel, weighing close to 100 tonnes.Center for Electromechanic

Vibrational and rotational sequences in 101 Mo and 103,4 Ru studied via multinucleon transfer reactions
The near yrast states of 101 Mo and 103,104 Ru have been studied following their population via heavy ion multinucleon transfer reactions between a 136 Xe beam and a thin, self supporting 100 Mo target. The ground state sequence in 104 Ru can be understood as demonstrating a simple evolution from a quasi vibrational structure at lower spins to statically deformed, quasi rotational excitation involving the population of a pair of low Omega h11 2 neutron orbitals. The effect of the decoupled h11 2 orbital on this vibration to rotational evolution is demonstrated by an extension of the E GOS prescription to include odd A nuclei. The experimental results are also compared with self consistent Total Routhian Surface calculations which also highlight the polarising role of the highly aligned neutron h11 2 orbital in these nucle
Scaling Tests of the Cross Section for Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering
We present the first measurements of the \vec{e}p->epg cross section in the
deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region.
The Q^2 dependence (from 1.5 to 2.3 GeV^2) of the helicity-dependent cross
section indicates the twist-2 dominance of DVCS, proving that generalized
parton distributions (GPDs) are accessible to experiment at moderate Q^2. The
helicity-independent cross section is also measured at Q^2=2.3 GeV^2. We
present the first model-independent measurement of linear combinations of GPDs

Exclusive Neutral Pion Electroproduction in the Deeply Virtual Regime
We present measurements of the ep->ep pi^0 cross section extracted at two
values of four-momentum transfer Q^2=1.9 GeV^2 and Q^2=2.3 GeV^2 at Jefferson
Lab Hall A. The kinematic range allows to study the evolution of the extracted
hadronic tensor as a function of Q^2 and W. Results will be confronted with
Regge inspired calculations and GPD predictions. An intepretation of our data
within the framework of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering has also been
attempted
