Desire to belong : contesting the view of Irish travellers as Deleuzian and Guattarian nomads
In my thesis I have discussed whether Irish Travellers could be considered to be Nomads in a way that French theorists Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari have developed the concept. Nomads in this context challenge and object the normative order set by the state and the mainstream society. My research is constructed around the concept of ethnicity and namely what Irish Travellers hope to gain with the ethnic status and how this relates to the ways how Travellers are controlled by the state. As a primary material I have used a report made by a Traveller support group which discusses the challenges which Irish Travellers are facing in todayâs Ireland and as a method I have used critical discourse analysis.
In my thesis I have discussed how physical nomadism plays a key role constructing Traveller identity and how physical nomadism relates to Deleuze's and Guattari's ideas about Nomadism. According to my findings Irish Travellers have a strong desire to be accepted by the mainstream society and to have an access to the resources controlled by the state. Irish Travellers want to be a part of the mainstream society hence keeping their own culture and be a part of the political process of the state. In the main chapters of my thesis I employ also other Deleuzian and Guattarian concepts like Faciality, Minority and Becoming in order to outline Travellers' relationship to Nomadism.
The conclusion in my thesis is that Irish Travellers cannot be considered Deleuzian and Guattarian Nomads. I have based this argument on my findings that according to my primary material Travellers have a strong desire to be included to the structures of the state and be respected by the main society. These require that Irish Travellers follow the rules set by the state and the mainstream society. There is however a possibility for Travellers to change the system in the context of becoming; by challenging the normative order by entering the state structures and the mainstream society
AsuinympÀristön laatu, terveys ja turvallisuus: internetpohjainen tiedonkeruu ja palautejÀrjestelmÀ (ALTTI)
Tutkimuksessa kehitettiin kattava tiedonkeruu- ja palautejÀrjestelmÀ, jonka tavoitteena
on hyvÀn, terveellisen ja turvallisen asuinympÀristön edistÀminen. Tutkimusprotokolla
kÀsitteli keskeisiÀ asuinympÀristön laatuongelmia (mm. sisÀilman laatu, ympÀristön
epÀpuhtaudet, kosteus- ja homevauriot, lÀmpö-, melu- ja ÀÀniolot, ilmanvaihdon riittÀvyys,
sekÀ asukkaiden kokemat terveys-, turvallisuus- ja viihtyvyyshaitat). KerÀtyn tietokannan
avulla voidaan arvioida Suomen asuinrakennuskannan laatua asumisterveyden
Vastausten perusteella heille annettiin mahdollisuus ottaa vastaan yksilöityÀ palautetta
asuinympÀristön terveys- ja turvallisuusnÀkökulmasta huomioitavista seikoista.
YhteensÀ 1312 henkilöÀ vastasi kyselyyn (vastausprosentti 44 %), mutta heistÀ ainoastaan
80 vastasi internetin kautta. TÀstÀ voidaan pÀÀtellÀ, ettÀ kerÀÀmÀllÀ satunnaisotantaan
perustuvaa aineistoa pelkÀstÀÀn internetin vÀlityksellÀ ei vÀlttÀmÀttÀ tÀnÀ
pÀivÀnÀ saavuteta hyvÀÀ vastausprosenttia. Vastaajista 433 (33 %) halusi palautetta vastauksiinsa
liittyen. Vaikuttaa siltÀ, ettÀ palautteen saantimahdollisuus houkuttelee osaa
ihmisistÀ vastaamaan ja hakemaan lisÀtietoa asumiskysymyksissÀ.
YhdistÀmÀllÀ vÀestörekisterikeskukselta saatu aineisto ja kyselyaineisto saatiin
kootuksi laaja asumistietoaineisto, joka sisÀltÀÀ myös paikkatiedon. Jatkossa tÀtÀ aineistoa
voidaan hyödyntÀÀ tutkittaessa asumiseen liittyvien tekijöiden suhdetta asukkaiden
raportoimiin terveys-, turvallisuus- ja viihtyvyyshaittoihin. JÀrjestelmÀÀ voidaan edelleen
kehittÀÀ jatkuvatoimiseksi tietojÀrjestelmÀksi niin poikkileikkaus- kuin pitkittÀistarkasteluissakin.

Energy Retrofits in Multi-family Buildings in North-east Europe: The Impacts on Thermal Conditions
AbstractWe have conducted a project to develop a common protocol for indoor environmental quality (IEQ) assessment and to assess the effects of energy retrofits on IEQ. This paper focuses on thermal comfort, which was first assessed based on 2-month continuous monitoring in 16 multi-family buildings (94 apartments) in Finland and 20 buildings (96 apartments) in Lithuania during heating season before retrofits. In addition, corresponding data after retrofits were available from three buildings (17 apartments) from Finland and seven (30 apartments) from Lithuania. Two data loggers per apartment were placed to evaluate Tw and RHw (warm area), and Tc and RHc (coldest spot). Questionnaire data regarding housing quality and health were collected from the occupants. The results before retrofits indicated high Tw (>23°C) for a large proportion of time in Finnish apartments, whereas opposite trend was observed in Lithuania. After retrofits, proportion of time with high Tw was higher while proportion of apartments with low RHw was lower in Finland, whereas in Lithuania, about one fourth of the apartments had higher Tw and RHw, hence fulfilling the national guidelines. The average absolute humidity was higher after retrofits in both countries, especially in Lithuania (by 15%). Occupant responses indicated improved thermal comfort. Therefore, potential effects of energy retrofits on occupantsâ thermal environment and satisfaction were demonstrated, and simply adjusting indoor temperature could help to save energy. Further analysis is needed to include the effects of outdoor conditions, as well as overall IEQ to the assessment
