Matemáticas, a prática e a segregação social. Efeitos de um sistema escolar estratificado
This article aims at investigating the form of mathematical knowledge that is transmitted in a secondary school in a context of social and institutional segregation. This article follows the premise that schools are actors in the differential distribution of different forms of knowledge to different social groups. Based on Bernstein's sociology of education, this article develops an analysis of classroom interaction and discusses it within the frames of the organisation of the school system and its socio-political relations. This methodology allows for making visible how the structuring of mathematical instruction affects the social regulation of students. The analysis reveals that the pedagogic practice is likely to lead students into a pedagogic cul-de-sac: students are deprived any form of mathematical consciousness, in esoteric as well as in mundane form. The conclusion suggests the importance of transmitting specialised knowledge in relation to its internal structure, also in contexts of intense segregationEste artículo tiene como objetivo investigar cómo se transmite el conocimiento matemático en una escuela secundaria en un contexto de segregación social e institucional.
Preface: The disorder of mathematics education, Part II. Critique, imagination and play
The idea of conceiving mathematics education as a disorder evolved at a small conference held at the Freie Universität Berlin from January 15th to 17th in 2015. The conference aimed at destabilizing taken-for-granted truths that lay at the heart of mathematics education as a research field. While the socio-political branch proclaims a critique of mainstream mathematics education to be at the core of its collective identity , the common premise of the participants of the meeting was that the radicality of this critique is more often than not domesticized for the sake of ordering its object in a way that it suits well the storylines that are commonly narrated. The conference and the book that resulted from that conference (The disorder of mathematics education; Straehler-Pohl, Bohlmann & Pais 2017) had a clear focus: developing a critique of the status quo of mathematics education research, including, and perhaps more importantly, research within a sociopolitical vein
During the last 20 years, increasing attention has been placed on social inequalities in mathematics achievement. Micro-sociological perspectives in research on mathematics education point to the particularities of classroom cultures and to the patterns, but also contingencies, prevalent in the construction of meaning in the mathematics classroom. With the aim of generating a sociology of mathematics instruction, the empirical focus of our research is directed at those micro-sociological patterns of classroom interaction that are related to the construction of a hierarchy of achievement in school mathematics. Applying Basil Bernstein’s theoretical framework proves to be useful in exploring these interactional patterns. As we are interested in elaborating on this framework, the purpose of the present paper is twofold: given the results of our empirical study, we will firstly present a list of interactional mechanisms that affect a stratification of students’ achievement in mathematics. Afterwards, we will reflect on the boundaries of Bernstein’s theory that we perceived in our work, opening up desiderata for further theorizing and research. In doing so, we will focus upon corporeality, normativity and pedagogic rights and illustrate their still predominantly neglected impact. Dancing on the junction of mathematics and bodily experience
In this experimental paper, we document an experience of artistic research, initiated by searching an answer for the question Is it possible to learn mathematics through dance? . We reflect on three different pathways towards experiencing mathematics in dance: theory, methodology and artistic experience. Following these pathways requires us to challenge established assumptions about mathematics and research and finally allows for exploring the dancing body itself as the potential space of mathematical knowledge. While we remain far from our initial aim of being able to make concrete suggestions about how to integrate dance as an integral part of school mathematics, this article reveals the emancipatory potential of dancing mathematics, facilitating positive experiences with mathematics that hitherto appeared impossible to us

pedagogic device in Mikro-Interaktionen nachzeichnen.
Mathematics classrooms offer students different opportunities to acquire and
accumulate mathematical knowledge and consciousness. Thereby, mathematics
classrooms affect students' prospects for their social and vocational
participation as adults. The thesis is based on the premise that such
differences do not arise due to varying cognitive potentials, but that they
are socially constructed along sociological variables, such as class or
migration. The focus is particularly on expectations that affect how
mathematics is recontextualised differently for different social groups. This
means that according to apparent charateristics and needs of the students,
mathematical knowledge is structured differentially, and different didactical
and pedagogic strategies are chosen. The thesis builds on BASIL BERNSTEIN's
sociology of education, particularly the theory of the pedagogic device, in
order to substantiate these assumptions. The thesis empirically reconstructs
the theory of the pedagogic device by means of interactional analyses of
mathematics classrooms. These analyses are refined by integration of concepts
from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). In this way, the workings of the
pedagogic device could be retraced through investigations of mathematics
classrooms in a school situated in a deprived area in Barcelona. This school
streams students according to their supposed mathematical abilities. The
analysis reveals how supposedly weak students are prepared for mundane and
manual activities while also the mathematical knowledge is structured
accordingly. In the group of supposedly stronger students, the teacher employs
teaching strategies that make knowledge and learning adaptable for the
acquisition of a rather intellectually driven form of mathematics. In this
way, school produces subjects who are specialised according to the division of
labour. Quite contrarily, in a Hauptschule in a deprived area in Berlin, the
analysis reveals mathematical instructions that appear not to create a
trajectory towards any form of specialised knowledge or specialised activity.
In fact, instructions unfold an impact that is solely directed towards the
social regulation of the students' behaviours. Taking into account SLAVOJ
ŽIŽEK's ideology critique, it can be shown how this finding does not
contradict the general workings of the pedagogic device, but rather points
towards its constitutive moment. The analysis reveals how the production of
subjects who are "disposable" for the division of labour is not only
characteristic but constitutive of a school system whose general function is
to ensure the operation of the division of labour. The interaction of the
different theories enables the thesis to point far beyond an explanation for
the phenomenon of marginalising effects of class mediated low expectations. In
this way the thesis makes a feasible contribution to the development of a
general sociology of instruction

The conclusion suggests the importance of transmitting specialised knowledge in relation to its internal structure, also in contexts of intense segregation.
