Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease Risk Factors related to Colorectal Cancer
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have an increasing risk for colorectal cancer which is believed to begin from no dysplasia progressing to indefinite dysplasia, low-grade dysplasia, high-grade dysplasia and finally to invasive adenocarcinoma, although colorectal cancer can arise without proceeding through each of these steps. As regards to the risk factors predisposing to colorectal cancer in the setting of inflammatory bowel disease, it seems that the risk increases with longer duration and greater anatomic extent of colitis, the degree of inflammation, and the presence of primary sclerosing cholangitis and family history of colorectal cancer. Concerning the mechanisms of carcinogenesis, it is now well established that the molecular alterations responsible for sporadic colorectal cancer, elucidated namely chromosomal instability, microsatellite instability, and hypermethylation, also play a role in colitis-associated colon carcinogenesis. Chemoprevention strategies include the management of medicaments such as aminosalicylates, ursodeoxycholic acid, and possibly folic acid, the exact role of which remains to be elucidated.Keywords: bowel disease, inflammation, patients, dysplasia, cytokines, cancer, smoking, chemoprevention, etc.

Tools to Assess Behavioral and Social Science Competencies in Medical Education
PurposeBehavioral and social science (BSS) competencies are needed to provide quality health care, but psychometrically validated measures to assess these competencies are difficult to find. Moreover, they have not been mapped to existing frameworks, like those from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This systematic review aimed to identify and evaluate the quality of assessment tools used to measure BSS competencies.MethodThe authors searched the literature published between January 2002 and March 2014 for articles reporting psychometric or other validity/reliability testing, using OVID, CINAHL, PubMed, ERIC, Research and Development Resource Base, SOCIOFILE, and PsycINFO. They reviewed 5,104 potentially relevant titles and abstracts. To guide their review, they mapped BSS competencies to existing LCME and ACGME frameworks. The final included articles fell into three categories: instrument development, which were of the highest quality; educational research, which were of the second highest quality; and curriculum evaluation, which were of lower quality.ResultsOf the 114 included articles, 33 (29%) yielded strong evidence supporting tools to assess communication skills, cultural competence, empathy/compassion, behavioral health counseling, professionalism, and teamwork. Sixty-two (54%) articles yielded moderate evidence and 19 (17%) weak evidence. Articles mapped to all LCME standards and ACGME core competencies; the most common was communication skills.ConclusionsThese findings serve as a valuable resource for medical educators and researchers. More rigorous measurement validation and testing and more robust study designs are needed to understand how educational strategies contribute to BSS competency development
Catalogue of solar-like oscillators observed by TESS in 120-second and 20-second cadence
© The Authors 2023.Context. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission has provided photometric light curves for stars across nearly the entire sky. This allows for the application of asteroseismology to a pool of potential solar-like oscillators that is unprecedented in size. Aims. We aim to produce a catalogue of solar-like oscillators observed by TESS in the 120-s and 20-s cadence modes. The catalogue is intended to highlight stars oscillating at frequencies above the TESS 30-min cadence Nyquist frequency with the purpose of encompassing the main-sequence and subgiant evolutionary phases. We aim to provide estimates for the global asteroseismic parameters vmax and -v. Methods. We applied a new probabilistic detection algorithm to the 120-s and 20-s light curves of over 250 000 stars. This algorithm flags targets that show characteristic signatures of solar-like oscillations. We manually vetted the resulting list of targets to confirm the presence of solar-like oscillations. Using the probability densities computed by the algorithm, we measured the global asteroseismic parameters vmax and -v. Results. We produce a catalogue of 4177 solar-like oscillators, reporting -v and vmax for 98% of the total star count. The asteroseismic data reveal a vast coverage of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, populating the red giant branch, the subgiant regime, and extending towards the main sequence. Conclusions. A crossmatch with external catalogues shows that 25 of the detected solar-like oscillators are a component of a spectroscopic binary, and 28 are confirmed planet host stars. These results provide the potential for precise, independent asteroseismic constraints on these and any additional TESS targets of interest
