Liquid Adsorption Model 6fPhenol Via Activated Carbon

    Get PDF
Every industrial process create products and waste streams that must be treated before they can bemarketed (products) or safely discharged (waste). Phenol is one of the compounds found in petrochemical wastewater that have attracted public attention due to its possible link with health even at low concentration. Adsorption via activated carbon is known as one of the most efficient methods for removal of petrochemical wastefrom aqueous solution. Conventionally, pilot scale evaluations on adsorption unit require huge investment; provide limited knowledge ontheadsorption behavior and exposes testing personnel to hazardous environment during evaluation. Hence, prediction using adsorption mathematical model is a better option. The objectives of this project areto develop a mathematical model which represents the behavior of the adiabatic-constant-velocity (ACV) adsorption process and to simulate dynamic concentration and temperature profiles of phenol-activated carbon adsorption using stage method and MATLAB. The adsorption mathematical model was developed by using Freundlich isotherm based on the differential mass and heat balances for adiabaric adsorption column. Numerical method of lines (NUMOL) serves as the core mathematical solution for stage method. EquiHbrium data from Abdul Hameed REHAN, Pakistan Institute of NuclearScienceand Technology (1998) were used to simulatethe ACVmodel. Simulation results on the concentration and temperature using the ACV model give reasonably not very accurate predictions when compared to the predicted breakthrough curves of adsorption of phenol (Frank L.Slejko, 1985). The possibilities cause of the errors was discussed. It is observed that at hightemperature, the adsorbed loading tends to be lowered and mass transfer is impeded. Lastly, the simulation results show that the prediction of concentration is more sensitive to mesh size than temperature predictions

A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology, Johannesburg, 2016Postoperative residual curarisation (PORC) resulting from the use of non depolarising muscle relaxants continues to be a significant problem. It is associated with an increase in morbidity and may delay discharge from the recovery room, increasing financial costs. An objective measurement of neuromuscular functioning using an accelerometer is recommended to ensure patient safety. The aim of this study was to describe the occurrence of PORC in the recovery room in patients who have received intermediate acting NDMRs intraoperatively at CHBAH. This was a prospective, contextual and descriptive study. The study sample included ASA 1 to 3 adult patients who had received an intermediate acting NDMR during elective surgery and had given pre operative consent to participate in the study. Neuromuscular function was monitored using acceleromyography. A TOF ratio < 0.9 was defined as having PORC. Data collection took place during December 2014 to February 2015. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study sample consisted of 55 patients. Twenty five patients had a TOF ratio < 0.9 on arrival in the recovery room. The occurrence of PORC was therefore 45.46%. Intraoperative neuromuscular monitoring was documented to have been done in 3 (5.45%) of the patients. The most frequently used NDMRs were rocuronium 31 (56.36%) and cisatracurium 9 (16.36%). There was no statistically significant differences in the occurrence of PORC relating to the NDMR used (p=0.72) but higher percentages were observed with cisatracurium 5 (55.56%). An anticholinesterase as reversal agent was used in 48 (87.27%) of the patients. PORC was significantly more frequent in patients who did not receive an anticholinesterase (85.71 vs. 39.58%, p=0.03). Three patients presented with a temperature < 35 °C. Incomplete neuromuscular recovery was more frequent in patients with a temperature < 35 °C, 2 (66.67%) compared to the patients with a temperature ≥ 35 °C 23 (44.23%) PORC remains a clinical problem in the recovery room. To ensure patient safety objective neuromuscular monitoring needs to be performed.MT201

Evaluating the Impact of Grafting on Local Tomato Production in Nebraska

Vegetable grafting has been known to improve plant production under both biotic and abiotic stresses. With an increase in interest among local growers towards grafting production, it is important to provide enough vegetable grafting information. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess the impact of grafting, rootstock cultivar, and local conditions and management on the yield and quality of tomato across the diverse growing and environmental conditions, specifically in Nebraska. Three open-field and one limited growing condition study were conducted between 2018 and 2019 across Nebraska. In the open-field trial, two determinant fresh market tomatoes, ‘Nebraska Wedding’ and ‘BHN-589’, were grafted onto one of two rootstocks, ‘Estamino’ and ‘Maxifort,’ with the nongrafted scion cultivars as controls. In 2019, a fertilizer treatment was introduced at all three locations with two different Nitrogen (N) rates (0 and 50 kg N ha-1). In the limited growing condition trial that took place in a greenhouse at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, ‘BHN-589’ were grafted onto ‘Estamino’ and ‘Maxifort,’ with the nongrafted scion cultivars as controls. Nitrogen (N) fertilizer treatments were implemented at 0.5 X, 1.0 X, and 1.5 X of 120 ppm of N, and water treatment was divided into high (above field capacity) and low (below field capacity). Overall, grafting did not provide consistent yield benefits under both trials. Under the open field condition, in 2018, nongrafted ‘BHN-589’ increased the number of marketable fruits by 54%. Whereas, in 2019, ‘BHN-589’ grafted onto ‘Maxifort’ increased total yield by 24%. Under the limited growing condition trial, ‘Estamino’ improved % of fruits marketability by 28% compared to the nongrafted plants, especially under 1.5 X of N fertility treatment. However, there were no significant differences in total and marketable yield between grafted and nongrafted plants. Moreover, there was no interaction effect between grafting and fertilizer treatment under both trials. Results from this study suggest the need for more assessment on the impact of field tomato grafting under different environmental conditions. Advisor: Sam Wortma
