Introduction. In recent years the volume of electronic information has grown exponentially. This phenomenon improves data exchange and communication but introduces new troubles in relation to information access and searching.
Aim. This paper proposes an exhaustive review of the different models, methods and algorithms that can be used to develop Visual Interfaces for Information Retrieval. The methods are classified on the basis of the stage of the process in which they take part: data analysis and transformation, application of classification and visual distribution algorithms, and application of visual transformation techniques.
Methodology. Based on the analysis, we compare the different methods that can be used in each stage of the production process. We also determine which combinations of methods and algorithms are most suitable at different stages.
Results. In the first section, data analysis and transformation, we analyse content mining, structure mining and use mining. In the second section, visual classification algorithm, we shown the hierarchical, network, scattering and map representations. In the last section, visual transformation techniques, we present the distortion (Focus+Context) and non-distortion techniques.
Conclusion. The results aim to become useful tools for other researchers when choosing a methodological combination for the development of specific proposals for visual interfaces for information retrieval, as well as suggest implications to be considered on the research of new visual transformation techniques

In this paper we aim to investigate the use of web sites. We add an
explanatory model from the perspective of design impact in the end-user
satisfaction. In this model we identify seven main design factors: functionality, accessibility, findability, usefulness, aesthetics, credibility and usability. They have been categorized as hygienic or motivator according to
their orientation towards the prevention of the frustration of use or the satisfaction of use they cause. The usability is the more important of those factors because it has a transversal function in the model: the usability interrelates the rest of design factors. We discuss the importance of each factor in the user experience, depending on the interactive context, and also the utility of analysing satisfaction from both hygienic-motivator dimensions

SCImago Graphica: a new tool for exploring and visually communicating data
Despite the increasing number of data visualization authoring systems in recent years, it remains a challenge to simultaneously achieve high expressive power and ease of use in a single tool. In this paper we present SCImago Graphica, a no-code tool which allows the creation of complex visualizations by simple drag-and-drop interactions. Users bind the data variables to the different encoding channels, and specify the settings of each binding, from which the tool generates the interactive graphical display. Due to its efficiency of use, SCImago Graphica is not only suitable for visually communicating data, but also for exploratory data analysis. We evaluate the expressiveness and ease of use of SCImago Graphica through various examples of chart construction and a catalog of visualizations. The results show that SCImago Graphica makes it possible to create a wide variety of data visualizations quickly and easily
Graphical interface of the SCImago Journal and Country Rank: An interactive approach to accessing bibliometric information
A graphical interface designed to access the bibliometric indicators database of the SCImago Journal & Country Rank portal (http://scimagojr.com/shapeofscience) is described. The map was generated from the relational matrix based on the citation, co-citation, and bibliographic coupling formed by the nearly 20,000 publications (journals and conference proceedings) registered in Scopus. The map layout is based on a variant of a force-directed algorithm using Noack’s proposal of an edge-repulsion energy model. The interface allows the publications’ bibliometric indicators and the cluster structures that they form to be displayed based on their shared use by the authors of the documents. To facilitate navigation, the interface automatically positions the reference areas and subject categories which are viewable via zoom-and-pan. The interface may be found to constitute a useful tool for analyses of the Scopus publications’ presence in different scientific domains, and of the global distribution of the publishing capacity of different countries and regions. It uses the method of overlaying maps to locate subsets of selected publications in the context of the global publication structure
Web 2.0 and folksonomies in a library context
This is the post-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2011 ElsevierLibraries have a societal purpose and this role has become increasingly important as new technologies enable organizations to support, enable and enhance the participation of users in assuming an active role in the creation and communication of information. Folksonomies, a Web 2.0 technology, represent such an example. Folksonomies result from individuals freely tagging resources available to them on a computer network. In a library environment folksonomies have the potential of overcoming certain limitations of traditional classification systems such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Typical limitations of this type of classification systems include, for example, the rigidity of the underlying taxonomical structures and the difficulty of introducing change in the categories. Folksonomies represent a supporting technology to existing classification systems helping to describe library resources more flexibly, dynamically and openly. As a review of the current literature shows, the adoption of folksonomies in libraries is novel and limited research has been carried out in the area. This paper presents research into the adoption of folksonomies for a University library. A Web 2.0 system was developed, based on the requirements collected from library stakeholders, and integrated with the existing library computer system. An evaluation of the work was carried out in the form of a survey in order to understand the possible reactions of users to folksonomies as well as the effects on their behavior. The broad conclusion of this work is that folksonomies seem to have a beneficial effect on users’ involvement as active library participants as well as encourage users to browse the catalogue in more depth

Introduction.
