    The role of crop production clubs in technology transfer

    Non-Peer ReviewedThis study was undertaken to determine if crop production club members represent an adopter category of the adoption diffusion theory as outlined by the literature, to obtain a more detailed description of the characteristics of the crop production club members and how they relate to the adopter categories and to determine the role crop production clubs play in the technology transfer process. A telephone survey was conducted using two groups, one selected from crop production clubs that had been organized for more than five years and the other a stratified random sample of non-club farmers in the surrounding area to the clubs. The questionnaire was designed to obtain information about innovative cropping practices, as well as demographic data, personal characteristics and communication behavior. A total of 38 crop production club members and 28 non-club farmers were contacted between April 22 and May 10, 1991. The results of the study found that the characteristics exhibited by crop production club members were similar to those outlined in the adoption-diffusion theory for early adopters. Therefore crop production club members fit into the adoption-diffusion process as early adopters. Crop clubs use demonstrations as a way of introducing new innovations to their club members. Both groups indicated that they used neighbors often as a source of information and therefore, crop production clubs members likely transfer information to others through this and other channels. They transfer technology through the adoption diffusion process as early adopters. From this study it can be concluded that crop production clubs do play a role in the technology transfer process

    Deuterium-deuterium nuclear cross-sections in insulator and metallic environments

    The three-dimensional Thomas-Fermi (TF) model is used to simulate the variation of the d+d to t + p cross-section at low impact energies, when the target deuterium nucleus is embedded in metallic or insulator environments. Comparison of the computational results to recent experiments demonstrates that even though the TF model can explain some increase in the low energy cross section for metallic host, a full explanation of the experimental results is still lacking. Data on the use of punitive behavior management techniques was gathered before, during, and after staff training in the use of more positive approaches to responding to disruptive behavior. Staff members use of punitive techniques as physical restraint and suspensions was greatly reduced following the training

    The effect of sad facial expressions on weight judgment

    Although the body weight evaluation (e.g., normal or overweight) of others relies on perceptual impressions, it also can be influenced by other psychosocial factors. In this study, we explored the effect of task-irrelevant emotional facial expressions on judgments of body weight and the relationship between emotion-induced weight judgment bias and other psychosocial variables including attitudes towards obese person. Forty-four participants were asked to quickly make binary body weight decisions for 960 randomized sad and neutral faces of varying weight levels presented on a computer screen. The results showed that sad facial expressions systematically decreased the decision threshold of overweight judgments for male faces. This perceptual decision bias by emotional expressions was positively correlated with the belief that being overweight is not under the control of obese persons. Our results provide experimental evidence that task-irrelevant emotional expressions can systematically change the decision threshold for weight judgments, demonstrating that sad expressions can make faces appear more overweight than they would otherwise be judged

    The Computational Complexity of Knot and Link Problems

    We consider the problem of deciding whether a polygonal knot in 3-dimensional Euclidean space is unknotted, capable of being continuously deformed without self-intersection so that it lies in a plane. We show that this problem, {\sc unknotting problem} is in {\bf NP}. We also consider the problem, {\sc unknotting problem} of determining whether two or more such polygons can be split, or continuously deformed without self-intersection so that they occupy both sides of a plane without intersecting it. We show that it also is in NP. Finally, we show that the problem of determining the genus of a polygonal knot (a generalization of the problem of determining whether it is unknotted) is in {\bf PSPACE}. We also give exponential worst-case running time bounds for deterministic algorithms to solve each of these problems. These algorithms are based on the use of normal surfaces and decision procedures due to W. Haken, with recent extensions by W. Jaco and J. L. Tollefson.Comment: 32 pages, 1 figur

    Deep far infrared ISOPHOT survey in "Selected Area 57", I. Observations and source counts

    We present here the results of a deep survey in a 0.4 sq.deg. blank field in Selected Area 57 conducted with the ISOPHOT instrument aboard ESAs Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) at both 60 um and 90 um. The resulting sky maps have a spatial resolution of 15 x 23 sq.arcsec. per pixel which is much higher than the 90 x 90 sq.arcsec. pixels of the IRAS All Sky Survey. We describe the main instrumental effects encountered in our data, outline our data reduction and analysis scheme and present astrometry and photometry of the detected point sources. With a formal signal to noise ratio of 6.75 we have source detection limits of 90 mJy at 60 um and 50 mJy at 90 um. To these limits we find cumulated number densities of 5+-3.5 per sq.deg. at 60 um and 14.8+-5.0 per sq.deg.at 90 um. These number densities of sources are found to be lower than previously reported results from ISO but the data do not allow us to discriminate between no-evolution scenarios and various evolutionary models.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic
