Binding as an A'-phenomenon?: Some remarks from Turkish

    Get PDF
This article argues against the morpheme speci#city of Binding "eory conditions in terms of pronoun-anaphor complementarity and proposes a tripartite system for the language at issue, Turkish. Focusing on the locality-based problems of Condition A and B in terms of anaphor and pronoun binding, the article claims that binding of an anaphor can be explained as an A’-phenomenon. "e empty topic operator merges with the anaphor and moves to the C-domain. "e stranded anaphor inside the clause is licensed by the empty operator via an A’-chain and the lexical antecedent of the anaphor plays no licensing role

DergiPark: 819528tmsjMicrovascular angina is a non-obstructive coronary syndrome which presents itself as anginal chest pain with different features compared to other causes of angina pectoris. Although, it occurs through a similar mechanism with the better-understood variant (prinzmetal) angina, unlike the former, microvascular angina affects the subendocardial thin, therefore less compliant vessels. It is essential for every medical practitioner to recognize a patient with microvascular angina, as the disease has some characteristic presentations, does not respond well to the classical treatments for angina pectoris, and eventually may result in serious complications later

Poetry Translation and Translation Criticism in Translation Journals of the Republican Period

    Get PDF
With a linguistic point of view, this article investigates the various aspects of poetry translation in Turkish Literature within the Republican Period. Our aim is to discuss the various manifestations of poetry translation in terms of the translation criticism and our discussion is based on the data taken from the three journals of translation published in the Republican era: Tercüme (1940-1966), Yazko Çeviri (1982-1984) and Metis Çeviri (1989-1992). Our findings indicate that literary clerk put a great emphasis on the poetry translation and express their views on translation via these journals. Accordingly, the poetry translation requires a distinct semiotic mechanism in order to transfer the linguistic material which is a combination of semantic, pragmatic, stylistic and rhetoric features from the source text into the target text. Our findings also show that the main point of discussion in the journals in terms of translation criticism is the (lack of) equivalence between the source text and target text, the specific linguistic devices to be used in the translation and the translation of stylistic features. It is evident from the discussions that the translation criticism in this period has limited contribution to the field due to fact that it approaches to the translation not as a linguistic process but an end product. Key words Translation, translation criticism, poetry translation, Tercüme, Yazko Çeviri, Metis Çevir

Employment of nanomaterials in polymerase chain reaction: insight into the impacts and putative operating mechanisms of nano-additives in PCR

    Get PDF
The unique ability to rapidly amplify low copy number DNA has made in vitro Polymerase Chain Reaction one of the most fundamental techniques in modern biology. In order to harness this technique to its full potential, certain obstacles such as nonspecific by-products, low yield and complexity of GC rich and long genomic DNA amplification need to be surmounted. As in vitro PCR does not have any regulatory mechanisms unlike its counterpart in vivo DNA replication machinery, scientists often use a number of additives like glycerol, betaine, dimethyl sulphoxide and formamide in order to achieve the perfection of in vivo systems. In the last two decades nanotechnology has provided excellent solutions to many classical problems in various scientific fields including biotechnology and recently the PCR technique has begun to benefit from this so called “Nano Era”. In this review, the impacts of several nanomaterials on PCR efficiency, specificity and fidelity are described in accordance with the recent literature. Putative interaction mechanisms between nanomaterials and primary PCR components are also addressed in a comprehensive manner

Since anticoagulation performed by affecting hematological parameters has serious complications such as bleeding, studies are also conducted to benefit from diets instead of prophylactic anticoagulants in order to reduce the risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE). Our aim is to review the benefits of the Mediterranean diet in the prophylaxis and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), although the current studies have yet to be conclusive. The Mediterranean diet is characterized by the consumption of plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes and unprocessed cereals, and seafood such as fish. The consumption of meat and meat products is low in this diet. The consumption of dairy products is also low. Fruits, vegetables and juices in the Mediterranean diet contain a significant amount of flavonoids. In addition, olive oil, which is one of the basic elements of the Mediterranean diet, has antioxidant properties due to its essential polyphenolic compounds. It has been reported that the low consumption of vegetables contributes to the increase of VTE incidence in Thai society. On the contrary, a diet with plenty of herbal food, fish and a small amount of red meat (Mediterranean diet) has been reported to reduce the risk of VTE. We think that the Mediterranean diet, which is beneficial for our health, may also decrease the risk of DVT. However, medical therapy is required for the treatment of patients with DVT. Nutritional approaches, including the Mediterranean diet, should be considered as supplement

A new test for the homogeneity of inverse gaussian scale parameters based on computational approach test

    Get PDF
In this paper, we focused on testing homogeneity of scale parameters of k Inverse Gaussian distributions (IGDs) since this distribution is one of the most common distribution for analyzing nonnegative right-skewed data. We have proposed a new test statistic based on the Computational Approach Test (CAT), which is a type of parametric bootstrap method, for testing homogeneity of scale parameters of k IGDs. Simulation results have been presented to compare the performances of the proposed method and existing methods such as the likelihood ratio test, modified likelihood ratio test and generalized likelihood ratio test in terms of type I error rate and power. The results showed that the proposed CAT is better than the others in terms of the type I error rates and powers in some cases
