Relativistic Burgers equations on curved spacetimes. Derivation and finite volume approximation

Within the class of nonlinear hyperbolic balance laws posed on a curved spacetime (endowed with a volume form), we identify a hyperbolic balance law that enjoys the same Lorentz invariance property as the one satisfied by the Euler equations of relativistic compressible fluids. This model is unique up to normalization and converges to the standard inviscid Burgers equation in the limit of infinite light speed. Furthermore, from the Euler system of relativistic compressible flows on a curved background, we derive, both, the standard inviscid Burgers equation and our relativistic generalizations. The proposed models are referred to as relativistic Burgers equations on curved spacetimes and provide us with simple models on which numerical methods can be developed and analyzed. Next, we introduce a finite volume scheme for the approximation of discontinuous solutions to these relativistic Burgers equations. Our scheme is formulated geometrically and is consistent with the natural divergence form of the balance laws under consideration. It applies to weak solutions containing shock waves and, most importantly, is well-balanced in the sense that it preserves steady solutions. Numerical experiments are presented which demonstrate the convergence of the proposed finite volume scheme and its relevance for computing entropy solutions on a curved background.Comment: 19 page

Direct simulation for a homogenous gas

A probabilistic analysis of the direct simulation of a homogeneous gas is given. A hierarchy of equations similar to the BBGKY hierarchy for the reduced probability densities is derived. By invoking the molecular chaos assumption, an equation similar to the Boltzmann equation for the single particle probability density and the corresponding H-theorem is derived

Motivasi, Kepuasan, Karakteristik, Kepemimpinan dan Keadilan Terhadap Komitmen Organisasi. Dilaksanakannya penelitian ini adalah untuk memberikan analisa serta pengaruh motivasi, kepuasan, karakteristik kepemimpinan, dan keadilan dalam organisasi serta komitmen dalam organisasi bagi karyawan bank swasta dengan jumlah pekerja yang cukup banyak. Penelitian ini terfokus pada karakterisitk kerja, kepemimpinan serta keadilan suatu organisasi sehingga memberikan pengaruh dalam komitmen organisasi. Untuk sampel yang dilakukan adalah sebanyak 200 karyawan yang diambil dari 5 (lima) bank swasta yang terdapat di Batam. Sampel yang bisa digunanakan sebanyak 124, serta mempergunakan PLS (Partial Least Squares). Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya pengaruh yang signifikan antara motivasi kerja, hasil kepuasan kerja dan pengaruh non-signifikan karakteristik kerja, kepemimpinan serta keadilan suatu organisasi berpengaruh bagi komitmen organisasi

Memoria colonial y etnohistoria de la mirada. Las fotografías de la Misión Dakar-Djibouti (1931-1933)

Desde los años noventa del pasado siglo se debate en Francia sobre la identidad de las minorías étnicas pertenecientes a los países colonizados antaño por los franceses. Sociólogos, historiadores y etnólogos aluden a las imágenes exóticas -en forma de fotografías, cartas postales y paneles publicitarios producidos y difundidos principalmente durante los últimos años del siglo XIX y principios del xx-como una de las causas que explican el imaginario colonial. Sin embargo, creo que hay un error en el que no se debe incurrir: pensar que las imágenes base de la construcción de ese imaginario son únicamente las representaciones exóticas anteriores al periodo fundacional de la etnología francesa como disciplina científica. O dicho de otra manera: cabe descartar que tal responsabilidad recaiga sólo en las representaciones anteriores al momento en que la figura del etnógrafo y la del etnólogo se fusionaron en una misma persona, cuando se pensó que una mirada distante y alejada de todo tipo de prejuicios permitiría conocer la alteridad de forma objetiva. Como trataré de mostrar mediante el análisis del trabajo fotográfico de la Misión Dakar-Djibouti (1931- 1933) -dirigida por Maree! Griaule y considerada una de las primeras investigaciones sobre el terreno de la etnografía francesa- la imagen legitimada por principios presuntamente científicos pone de manifiesto nuevos problemas de representación que condujeron a nuevos estereotipos antropológicos. Si la fotografía antropológica durante el siglo XIX y principios del xx sirvió en numerosos casos para legitimar las teorías evolucionistas, las fotografías de la Dakar-Djibouti servirán para legitimar las tesis culturalistas, convirtiendo la alteridad en «objeto» de estudio. Pero además, al analizar el trabajo fotográfico de la DakarDjibouti en su totalidad, puede verse la reproducción de numerosos cánones de representación fotográfica de los que desde un primer momento trató de distanciarse. Al fin y al cabo, pues, la etnografía como disciplina científica en sus orígenes no fue una ciencia tan «humana» como pretendía. En definitiva, este análisis se presenta como un trabajo de etnohistoria de la mirada que responde al interés por revalorizar las imágenes como documentos, por sus límites y su utilidad a la hora de analizar la forma en que los etnólogos entendieron el trabajo etnográfico y la relación con la alteridad

¿Fotografía antropológica o antropologizada? : de la fototeca del Museo del Hombre a la iconoteca del Museo du Quai Branly

La fotografía y la antropología como ciencia reconocida nacieron a mediados del siglo XIX, siendo ya habitual la utilización de la fotografía como herramienta metodológica para el conocimiento de la alteridad exótica. Es en los años treinta del siglo XX, con las expediciones que fundaron la etnología francesa, cuando el interés de destacados antropólogos hizo surgir en los museos etnográficos departamentos especializados en el tratamiento de imágenes, que en su periplo archivístico adquirían así carácter antropológico. As photography, anthropology was also born at the mid of the nineteenth century, being then usual its use as a tool to get to know the other as exotic. It was during the thirties of the past century, along with the expeditions that found French ethnology, when the interest of important anthropologists made it possible the appearance of specialised photography departments in some ethnological museums, thus giving pictures its anthropological value

Involvement of the α/β Isoform of p38 MAP Kinase in Chemotactic Responses of Human Eosinophils to Eotaxin (CCL11) and RANTES (CCL5)

Eosinophils are the principal effector cells for allergic inflammation in a variety of diseases, in which they contribute to tissue damage and remodelling processes via the secretion of cytotoxic granular proteins and cytokines. The intracellular mechanisms that control the activation, recruitment and survival of eosinophils are fundamental in understanding these disease processes. Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) has been shown previously to be essential for eosinophil chemotactic responses to some stimuli but not others. Human blood neutrophils have been shown to utilize two antagonistic signalling pathways for chemotaxis: PI3K and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK). In the present study, the role of p38 MAPK in chemotactic responses of an eosinophildifferentiated myeloid leukaemia cell line (EOL-1) and human peripheral blood eosinophils to a range of stimuli - platelet-activating factor (PAF), eotaxin 1 (CCL11), RANTES (CCL5), interleukin 8 (IL8, CXCL8) and IL16 - was explored through the use of the p38 MAPK α/β isoform inhibitor, SB 203580. SB 203580 caused significant inhibition of chemotactic responses of both EOL-1 cells and blood eosinophils to eotaxin 1 and RANTES (≥75% inhibition at 1 µM SB 203580, p<0.01) but had no effect on the migration induced by PAF and IL16 (<25%) and little or no effect on responses to IL8. Responses to PAF - but not eotaxin - have been shown previously to be suppressed by PI3K inhibition. The complementary pattern of inhibition observed in the present study provides evidence that distinct PI3K-dependent and p38 MAPK-dependent chemoattractants may also exist for eosinophils
