    Investigating Female Indigenous Leadership in Latin America

    This project investigates gender constructs and the complex assigned gender roles in settings of female indigenous leadership in Latin America. It examines two distinct indigenous communities, including the BriBri society in Yorkín, Costa Rica and the Maya peoples in Santa Anita, Guatemala that demonstrate the circumstantial spectrum in which women can obtain leadership roles and what actors directly influence this process. Each case study explores the fluidity of gender identities in which concepts of masculinity often guide female empowerment and liberation. With Costa Rica abolishing their military in 1948 and Guatemala experiencing a 36-year civil war (1960-1996) and a major genocide targeted at Maya peoples during the war-torn period, the governmental stability of both nations are developmentally counterparts. This research looks at the democratic success story of Costa Rica and questions what circumstances have fostered female leadership within the Yorkín community in contrast with the instable and stagnant democracy that surrounds rural Guatemalan communities like Santa Anita. Moreover, my project aims to discuss the root causes of the cases’ historical differences and reaffirm how each of their social constructions of gender impacts opportunities for women. This investigation is based on onsite interviews conducted in both communities and a series of observations that encouraged further examination of historical, cultural, and sociopolitical factors that have promoted or inhibited female empowerment and female dominated management in community development projects

    Dislocation constriction and cross-slip in Al and Ag: an ab initio study

    A novel model based on the Peierls framework of dislocations is developed. The new theory can deal with a dislocation spreading at more than one slip planes. As an example, we study dislocation cross-slip and constriction process of two fcc metals, Al and Ag. The energetic parameters entering the model are determined from ab initio calculations. We find that the screw dislocation in Al can cross-slip spontaneously in contrast with that in Ag, which splits into partials and cannot cross-slip without first being constricted. The dislocation response to an external stress is examined in detail. We determine dislocation constriction energy and critical stress for cross-slip, and from the latter, we estimate the cross-slip energy barrier for the straight screw dislocations

    Origin of the ϕ ∼ ±9° peaks in YBa2Cu3O7−δ films grown on cubic zirconia substrates

    The c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7−δ films grown on (001) yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ) substrates often contain domains whose in-plane alignment is rotated approximately 9° from the cube-on-cube epitaxial relationship, in addition to the more commonly observed 0° and 45° in-plane rotations. We have investigated the origin of this ∼9° orientation using in situ electron diffraction during growth and ex situ 4-circle x-ray diffraction. Our results indicate that the ∼9° orientation provides the most favorable lattice match between the interfacial (110)-oriented BaZrO3 epitaxial reaction layer, which forms between YBa2Cu3O7−δ and the YSZ substrate. If epitaxy occurs directly between YBa2Cu3O7−δ and the YSZ substrate, i.e., before the BaZrO3 epitaxial reaction layer is formed, the 0° and 45° domains have the most favorable lattice match. However, growth conditions that favor the formation of the BaZrO3 reaction layer prior to the nucleation of YBa2Cu3O7−δ lead to an increase in ∼9° domains. The observed phenomenon, which results from epitaxial alignment between the diagonal of a square surface net and the diagonal of a rectangular surface net, is a general method for producing in-plane misorientations, and has also been observed for the heteroepitaxial growth of other materials, including (Ba, K)BiO3/LaAlO3. The YBa2Cu3O7−δ/YSZ case involves epitaxial alignment between [111]BaZrO3 and [110]YSZ, resulting in an expected in-plane rotation of 11.3° to 9.7° for fully commensurate and for fully relaxed (110)BaZrO3 on (001)YSZ, respectivel

    Are there gender differences in the geography of alcohol-related mortality in Scotland? An ecological study

    <b>Background</b> There is growing concern about alcohol-related harm, particularly within Scotland which has some of the highest rates of alcohol-related death in western Europe. There are large gender differences in alcohol-related mortality rates in Scotland and in other countries, but the reasons for these differences are not clearly understood. In this paper, we aimed to address calls in the literature for further research on gender differences in the causes, contexts and consequences of alcohol-related harm. Our primary research question was whether the kind of social environment which tends to produce higher or lower rates of alcohol-related mortality is the same for both men and women across Scotland. <b>Methods</b> Cross-sectional, ecological design. A comparison was made between spatial variation in men's and women's age-standardised alcohol-related mortality rates in Scotland using maps, Moran's Index, linear regression and spatial analyses of residuals. Directly standardised mortality rates were derived from individual level records of death registration, 2000–2005 (n = 8685). <b>Results</b> As expected, men's alcohol-related mortality rate substantially exceeded women's and there was substantial spatial variation in these rates for both men and women within Scotland. However, there was little spatial variation in the relationship between men's and women's alcohol-mortality rates (r2 = 0.73); areas with relatively high rates of alcohol-related mortality for men tended also to have relatively high rates for women. In a small number of areas (8 out of 144) the relationship between men's and women's alcohol-related mortality rates was significantly different. <b>Conclusion</b> In as far as geographic location captures exposure to social and economic environment, our results suggest that the relationship between social and economic environment and alcohol-related harm is very similar for men and women. The existence of a small number of areas in which men's and women's alcohol-related mortality had an different relationship suggests that some places may have unusual drinking cultures. These might prove useful for further investigations into the factors which influence drinking behaviour in men and women

    Generalized stacking fault energy surfaces and dislocation properties of aluminum

    We have employed the semidiscrete variational generalized Peierls-Nabarro model to study the dislocation core properties of aluminum. The generalized stacking fault energy surfaces entering the model are calculated by using first-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) with pseudopotentials and the embedded atom method (EAM). Various core properties, including the core width, splitting behavior, energetics and Peierls stress for different dislocations have been investigated. The correlation between the core energetics and dislocation character has been explored. Our results reveal a simple relationship between the Peierls stress and the ratio between the core width and atomic spacing. The dependence of the core properties on the two methods for calculating the total energy (DFT vs. EAM) has been examined. The EAM can give gross trends for various dislocation properties but fails to predict the finer core structures, which in turn can affect the Peierls stress significantly (about one order of magnitude).Comment: 25 pages, 12 figure

    Short-Range Ising Spin Glass: Multifractal Properties

    The multifractal properties of the Edwards-Anderson order parameter of the short-range Ising spin glass model on d=3 diamond hierarchical lattices is studied via an exact recursion procedure. The profiles of the local order parameter are calculated and analysed within a range of temperatures close to the critical point with four symmetric distributions of the coupling constants (Gaussian, Bimodal, Uniform and Exponential). Unlike the pure case, the multifractal analysis of these profiles reveals that a large spectrum of the α\alpha -H\"older exponent is required to describe the singularities of the measure defined by the normalized local order parameter, at and below the critical point. Minor changes in these spectra are observed for distinct initial distributions of coupling constants, suggesting an universal spectra behavior. For temperatures slightly above T_{c}, a dramatic change in the F(α)F(\alpha) function is found, signalizing the transition.Comment: 8 pages, LaTex, PostScript-figures included but also available upon request.     A Phase 3 Trial of 2 Years of Androgen Suppression and Radiation Therapy With or Without Adjuvant Chemotherapy for High-Risk Prostate Cancer: Final Results of Radiation Therapy Oncology Group Phase 3 Randomized Trial NRG Oncology RTOG 9902.

    PURPOSE: Long-term (LT) androgen suppression (AS) with radiation therapy (RT) is a standard treatment of high-risk, localized prostate cancer (PCa). Radiation Therapy Oncology Group 9902 was a randomized trial testing the hypothesis that adjuvant combination chemotherapy (CT) with paclitaxel, estramustine, and oral etoposide plus LT AS plus RT would improve overall survival (OS). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with high-risk PCa (prostate-specific antigen 20-100 ng/mL and Gleason score [GS] ≥ 7 or clinical stage ≥ T2 and GS ≥ 8) were randomized to RT and AS (AS + RT) alone or with adjuvant CT (AS + RT + CT). CT was given as four 21-day cycles, delivered beginning 28 days after 70.2 Gy of RT. AS was given as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone for 24 months, beginning 2 months before RT plus an oral antiandrogen for 4 months before and during RT. The study was designed based on a 6% improvement in OS from 79% to 85% at 5 years, with 90% power and a 2-sided alpha of 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 397 patients (380 eligible) were randomized. The patients had high-risk PCa, 68% with GS 8 to 10 and 34% T3 to T4 tumors, and median prostate-specific antigen of 22.6 ng/mL. The median follow-up period was 9.2 years. The trial closed early because of excess thromboembolic toxicity in the CT arm. The 10-year results for all randomized patients revealed no significant difference between the AS + RT and AS + RT + CT arms in OS (65% vs 63%; P=.81), biochemical failure (58% vs 54%; P=.82), local progression (11% vs 7%; P=.09), distant metastases (16% vs 14%; P=.42), or disease-free survival (22% vs 26%; P=.61). CONCLUSIONS: NRG Oncology RTOG 9902 showed no significant differences in OS, biochemical failure, local progression, distant metastases, or disease-free survival with the addition of adjuvant CT to LT AS + RT. The trial results provide valuable data regarding the natural history of high-risk PCa treated with LT AS + RT and have implications for the feasibility of clinical trial accrual and tolerability using CT for PCa

    Occurrence of genes of putative fibrinogen binding proteins and hemolysins, as well as of their phenotypic correlates in isolates of S. lugdunensis of different origins

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Staphylococcus lugdunensis </it>is an important human pathogen that causes potentially fatal endocarditis, osteomyelitis and skin and soft tissue infections similar to diseases caused by <it>Staphylococcus aureus</it>. Nevertheless, in contrast to <it>S. aureus</it>, data on pathogenicity factors of <it>S. lugdunensis </it>is scarce. Two adhesins, a fibrinogen and a von Willebrand factor binding protein, and a <it>S. lugdunensis </it>synergistic hemolysin (SLUSH) have been previously described. Moreover, the newly sequenced genome of <it>S. lugdunensis </it>revealed genes of other putative fibrinogen binding adhesins and hemolysins. The aim of this study was to gain more insight into the occurrence of genes likely coding for fibrinogen binding adhesins and hemolysins using clinical strains of <it>S. lugdunensis</it>.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Most of the putative adhesin genes and hemolysin genes investigated in this study were highly prevalent, except for the SLUSH gene cluster. In contrast to previous reports, binding to fibrinogen was detected in 29.3% of the <it>S. lugdunensis </it>strains. In most strains, hemolysis on blood agar plates was weak after 24 h and distinct after 48 h of incubation. The fibrinogen binding and hemolysis phenotypes were also independent of the type of clinical specimen, from which the isolates were obtained.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this study we described a pyrrolidonyl arylamidase negative <it>S. lugdunensis </it>isolate. Our data indicate that a matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight MS-based identification of <it>S. lugdunensis </it>or species-specific PCR's should be performed in favour of pyrrolidonyl arylamidase testing. In contrast to the high occurrence of putative fibrinogen binding protein genes, 29.3% of the <it>S. lugdunensis </it>strains bound to fibrinogen. Putative hemolysin genes were also prevalent in most of the <it>S. lugdunensis </it>strains, irrespective of their hemolysis activity on Columbia blood agar plates. Similar to a previous report, hemolysis after 48 h of incubation is also indicative for <it>S. lugdunensis</it>. The SLUSH gene cluster was detected in an estimated 50% of the strains, indicating that this locus is different or non-prevalent in many strains.</p
