    Sensitivity of solar-cell performance to atmospheric variables. 2: Dissimilar cells at several locations

    Several solar cells having dissimilar spectral response curves and cell construction were measured at various locations in the United States to determine sensitivity of cell performance to atmospheric water vapor and turbidity. The locations selected represent a broad range of summer atmospheric conditions, from clear and dry to turbid and humid. Cell short circuit current under direct normal incidence sunlight, the intensity, water vapor and turbidity were measured. Regression equations were developed from the limited data base in order to provide a single method of prediction of cell current sensitivity to the atmospheric variables

    Cockpit displays of traffic information: Airline pilots opinions about content, symbology, and format

    A number of candidate computer-generated cockpit displays of traffic information (CDTI) displays and display options were simulated statically and were shown to 23 airline pilots who were asked to respond to more than 250 questions about them. The pilots indicated that the amount and complexity of navigation information displayed should increase with altitude and map scale. Terrain information should appear automatically if a pilot's own aircraft descends below the minimum safe altitude and should include only those obstruction within 2,000 ft or less. Few pilots that weather information should be displayed on a CDTI, but if it was, it should be at pilot request only. A chevron-shaped symbol, located so that the majority of the map area was ahead was preferred. The position, altitude, ground speed, ground track, weight class, and flightpath history of other aircraft should be presented graphically by coding the shape of the symbol for other aircraft or presented digitally in data tags displayed at pilot request. All pilots thought that color coding was necessary to recognize different categories of information quickly and accurately. The majority of pilots felt that a CDTI would provide useful information even though its presence might increase their workload somewhat particularly during its introductory stages

    The concept of limited liability and the plight of creditors within corporate governance and company law: a UK perspective

    The focus of this paper is to analyse the effects of shareholder primacy governance on creditors, the characteristics of the firm, and how creditors can protect themselves. The governance of the firm is legally vested on directors and the law places on them specific duties requiring them to act in a certain way to promote the success of the company. The governance of the firm has evolved to be known as corporate governance. The mode of corporate governance such as the shareholder oriented governance and the characteristics that come with the firm (legal personality and limited liability) have negative implications on creditors. Shareholder primacy model of corporate governance seems to find its support from the Companies Act so does limited liability which limits the liability of the Members to the subscribed shares. Legal personality of the firm means that the firm is a juristic person with rights and obligations of a natural person in that it can own its own property. The presence of limited liability brings about the shareholder primacy model of governance. The problem is not the shareholders but the foundation on which they find there protection which is the law. With the presence of the above concepts, the implication on creditors is higher risk. This paper argues that if creditors’ interests are taken into account from inception, creditors will be better protected as they would be an ongoing concern for the company. Although the law provides circumstances when the corporate veil can be pierced as a mechanism to protect creditors, it is argued in this paper that clear and concise rules must be put in place as to when the veil can be pieced

    The fast contribution of visual-proprioceptive discrepancy to reach aftereffects and proprioceptive recalibration

    Adapting reaches to altered visual feedback not only leads to motor changes, but also to shifts in perceived hand location; “proprioceptive recalibration”. These changes are robust to many task variations and can occur quite rapidly. For instance, our previous study found both motor and sensory shifts arise in as few as 6 rotated-cursor training trials. The aim of this study is to investigate one of the training signals that contribute to these rapid sensory and motor changes. We do this by removing the visuomotor error signals associated with classic visuomotor rotation training; and provide only experience with a visual-proprioceptive discrepancy for training. While a force channel constrains reach direction 30o away from the target, the cursor representing the hand unerringly moves straight to the target. The resulting visual-proprioceptive discrepancy drives significant and rapid changes in no-cursor reaches and felt hand position, again within only 6 training trials. The extent of the sensory change is unexpectedly larger following the visual-proprioceptive discrepancy training. Not surprisingly the size of the reach aftereffects is substantially smaller than following classic visuomotor rotation training. However, the time course by which both changes emerge is similar in the two training types. These results suggest that even the mere exposure to a discrepancy between felt and seen hand location is a sufficient training signal to drive robust motor and sensory plasticity.York University Librarie

    The relation between time of presentation and the sleep disturbing effects of nocturnally occurring jet aircraft flyovers

    The research describes the sleep disturbing effects of jet aircraft flyover noise as it occurs at different times during the night. The results indicate that individuals respond statistically more, in terms of greater cortical desynchronization, during the first and last thirds of the night. During the middle third, while there is still a significant amount of cortical desynchronization in response to the jet aircraft noise, this is always less than that which occurs earlier or later in the night. The implications of this data are that it might be possible to reduce the disruptive effects of at least certain extrinsic sonic stimulation by appropriate scheduling

    EAGLEView: A surface and grid generation program and its data management

    An old and proven grid generation code, the EAGLE grid generation package, is given an added dimension of a graphical interface and a real time data base manager. The Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) Panel Library is used for the graphical user interface. Through the panels, EAGLEView constructs the EAGLE script command and sends it to EAGLE to be processed. After the object is created, the script is saved in a mini-buffer which can be edited and/or saved and reinterpreted. The graphical objects are set-up in a linked-list and can be selected or queried by pointing and clicking the mouse. The added graphical enhancement to the EAGLE system emphasizes the unique capability to construct field points around complex geometry and visualize the construction every step of the way

Two parasites, Parania geniculata and Elasmus albizziae, are associated with overwintering pupae or the immediate prepupal larvae. Combined parasitism during the winters of 1981-82,1982-83, and 1983-84 was 2.1,3.9, and 2.9%, respectively

    Monopole clusters in Abelian projected gauge theories

    We show that the monopole currents which one obtains in the maximally Abelian gauge of SU(2) fall into two quite distinct classes (when the volume is large enough). In each field configuration there is precisely one cluster that permeates the whole lattice volume. It has a current density and a magnetic screening mass that scale and it produces the whole of the string tension. The remaining clusters have a number density that follows an approximate power law proportional to the inverse cube of l where l is the length of the monopole world line in lattice units. These clusters are localised in space-time with radii which vary as the square root of l. In terms of the radius r these `lumps' have a scale-invariant distribution proportional to (dr/r . 1/{r^4}). Moreover they appear not to contribute at all to the string tension.     Multiple curved descending approaches and the air traffic control problem

    A terminal area air traffic control simulation was designed to study ways of accommodating increased air traffic density. The concepts that were investigated assumed the availability of the microwave landing system and data link and included: (1) multiple curved descending final approaches; (2) parallel runways certified for independent and simultaneous operation under IFR conditions; (3) closer spacing between successive aircraft; and (4) a distributed management system between the air and ground. Three groups each consisting of three pilots and two air traffic controllers flew a combined total of 350 approaches. Piloted simulators were supplied with computer generated traffic situation displays and flight instruments. The controllers were supplied with a terminal area map and digital status information. Pilots and controllers also reported that the distributed management procedure was somewhat more safe and orderly than the centralized management procedure. Flying precision increased as the amount of turn required to intersect the outer mark decreased. Pilots reported that they preferred the alternative of multiple curved descending approaches with wider spacing between aircraft to closer spacing on single, straight in finals while controllers preferred the latter option. Both pilots and controllers felt that parallel runways are an acceptable way to accommodate increased traffic density safely and expeditiously

    Monopole clusters, Z(2) vortices and confinement in SU(2)

    We extend our previous study of magnetic monopole currents in the maximally Abelian gauge [hep-lat/9712003] to larger lattices at small lattice spacings (20^4 at beta = 2.5 and 32^4 at beta = 2.5115). We confirm that at these weak couplings there continues to be one monopole cluster that is very much longer than the rest and that the string tension, K, is entirely due to it. The remaining clusters are compact objects whose population as a function of radius follows a power law that deviates from the scale invariant form, but much too weakly to suggest a link with the analytically calculable size distribution of small instantons. We also search for traces of Z(2) vortices in the Abelian projected fields; either as closed loops of `magnetic' flux or through appropriate correlations amongst the monopoles. We find, by direct calculation, that there is no confining condensate of such flux loops. We also find, through the calculation of doubly charged Wilson loops within the monopole fields, that there is no suppression of the q=2 effective string tension out to at distances of at least r ~ 1.6/sqrt{K}, suggesting that if there are any vortices they are not encoded in the monopole fields.Comment: 26 pages of LaTeX and PostScript figure
