    Evaluation of current clinical target volume definitions for glioblastoma using cell-based dosimetry stochastic methods

    Determination of an optimal clinical target volume (CTV) is complex and remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to develop a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) model to be used for evaluation of current CTV practices for external radiotherapy.The GBM model was structured as follows: (1) a Geant4 cellular model was developed to calculate the absorbed dose in individual cells represented by cubic voxels of 20 μm sides. The system was irradiated with opposing 6 MV X-ray beams. The beams encompassed planning target volumes corresponding to 2.0- and 2.5-cm CTV margins; (2) microscopic extension probability (MEP) models were developed using MATLAB(®) 2012a (MathWorks(®), Natick, MA), based on clinical studies reporting on GBM clonogenic spread; (3) the cellular dose distribution was convolved with the MEP models to evaluate cellular survival fractions (SFs) for both CTV margins.A CTV margin of 2.5 cm, compared to a 2.0-cm CTV margin, resulted in a reduced total SF from 12.9% ± 0.9% to 3.6% ± 0.2%, 5.5% ± 0.4% to 1.2% ± 0.1% and 11.1% ± 0.7% to 3.0% ± 0.2% for circular, elliptical and irregular MEP distributions, respectively.A Monte Carlo model was developed to quantitatively evaluate the impact of GBM CTV margins on total and penumbral SF. The results suggest that the reduction in total SF ranges from 3.5 to 5, when the CTV is extended by 0.5 cm.The model provides a quantitative tool for evaluation of different CTV margins in terms of cell kill efficacy.     Hypoxia in head and neck cancer in theory and practice: a PET-based imaging approach

    Hypoxia plays an important role in tumour recurrence among head and neck cancer patients. The identification and quantification of hypoxic regions are therefore an essential aspect of disease management. Several predictive assays for tumour oxygenation status have been developed in the past with varying degrees of success. To date, functional imaging techniques employing positron emission tomography (PET) have been shown to be an important tool for both pretreatment assessment and tumour response evaluation during therapy. Hypoxia-specific PET markers have been implemented in several clinics to quantify hypoxic tumour subvolumes for dose painting and personalized treatment planning and delivery. Several new radiotracers are under investigation. PET-derived functional parameters and tracer pharmacokinetics serve as valuable input data for computational models aiming at simulating or interpreting PET acquired data, for the purposes of input into treatment planning or radio/chemotherapy response prediction programs. The present paper aims to cover the current status of hypoxia imaging in head and neck cancer together with the justification for the need and the role of computer models based on PET parameters in understanding patient-specific tumour behaviour.Loredana G.     The use of EM-CCDs on high resolution soft x-ray spectrometers

    Charge-Coupled Devices (CCDs) have been traditionally used on high resolution soft X-ray spectrometers, but with their ability to increase the signal level in the detector before the readout noise of the system is added, Electron-Multiplying CCDs (EM-CCDs) have the potential to offer many advantages in soft X-ray detection. Through this signal multiplication an EM-CCD has advantages over conventioanl CCDs of increased signal, suppressed noise, faster readout speeds for the same equivalent readout noise and an increased inmmunity to Electro-Magnetic Intereference. This paper will look at present and future spacel applications for high resolution soft X-ray spectrometers and assess the advantages and disadvantage of using EM-CCDs in these applications

    Survival of Fossilised Diatoms and Forams in Hypervelocity Impacts with Peak Shock Pressures in the 1 – 19 GPa Range

    Previously it has been shown that diatom fossils embedded in ice could survive impacts at speeds of up to 5 km s-1 and peak shock pressures up to 12 GPa. Here we confirm these results using a different technique, with diatoms carried in liquid water suspensions at impact speeds of 2 to 6 km s-1. These correspond to peak shock pressures of 3.8 to 19.8 GPa. We also report on the results of similar experiments using forams, at impact speeds of 4.67 km s-1 (when carried in water) and 4.73 km s-1 (when carried in ice), corresponding to peak shock pressures of 11.6 and 13.1 GPa respectively. In all cases we again find survival of recognisable fragments, with mean fragment size of order 20 – 25 µm. We compare our results to the peak shock pressures that ejecta from giant impacts on the Earth would experience if it subsequently impacted the Moon. We find that 98% of impacts of terrestrial ejecta on the Moon would have experienced peak pressures less than 20 GPa if the ejecta were a soft rock (sandstone). This falls to 82% of meteorites if the ejecta were a hard rock (granite). This assumes impacts on a solid lunar surface. If we approximate the surface as a loose regolith, over 99% of the impacts involve peak shock pressures below 20 GPa. Either way, the results show that a significant fraction of terrestrial meteorites impacting the Moon will do so with peak shock pressures which in our experiments permit the survival of recognisable fossil fragments

    Creating Calibration Curves to Determine Shock Pressure in Clinopyroxene

    Impact cratering is an important geological process that occurs on every rocky body in the solar system. It alters the texture and mineralogy of rocks via shock metamorphism. The peak shock pressures experienced by a rock are traditionally evaluated using qualitative optical methods however, quantitative methods do exist. One such method was developed by Uchizono et al., who used X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to measure lattice strain () in several artificially shocked olivine grains using XRD peak broadening as a function of tan , where is the diffraction angle. They plotted the values against the known peak shock pressures experienced by the olivine grains. Using this calibration curve, the precise shock pressure experienced by a grain of olivine can be determined using its measured value. Another method was developed by McCausland et al. and Izawa et al., who used in situ XRD to measure strain-related mosaicity (SRM) of olivine in several ordinary chondrites and enstatite in enstatite chondrites, respectively. They plotted these results against the shock stage estimates for these meteorites. Using these plots, meteorites can be assigned to shock stage bins by measuring the SRM of olivine and/or enstatite. Both methods are useful for evaluating shock metamorphism, however, they have limitations. Uchizono et al.s calibration curve has been successfully applied to martian meteorites, however it can only be applied to olivine-bearing rocks. McCausland et al.s and Izawa et al.s SRM method is uncalibrated and is limited to binning meteorites by shock stage. This work aims to expand on both methods by creating calibration curves for clinopyroxene (CPX): one for , similar to Uchizono et al.s calibration curve for olivine, and one for SRM. This will extend the application of shock calibration methods to a greater variety of rock types. Preliminary results are presented herein

    Intestinal microbiology shapes population health impacts of diet and lifestyle risk exposures in torres strait islander communities

    Poor diet and lifestyle exposures are implicated in substantial global increases in non-communicable disease burden in low-income, remote, and Indigenous communities. This observational study investigated the contribution of the fecal microbiome to influence host physiology in two Indigenous communities in the Torres Strait Islands: Mer, a remote island where a traditional diet predominates, and Waiben a more accessible island with greater access to takeaway food and alcohol. Counterintuitively, disease markers were more pronounced in Mer residents. However, island-specific differences in disease risk were explained, in part, by microbiome traits. The absence of Alistipes onderdonkii, for example, significantly (p=0.014) moderated island-specific patterns of systolic blood pressure in multivariate-adjusted models. We also report mediatory relationships between traits of the fecal metagenome, disease markers, and risk exposures. Understanding how intestinal microbiome traits influence response to disease risk exposures is critical for the development of strategies that mitigate the growing burden of cardiometabolic disease in these communities

    Experiencing space–time: the stretched lifeworlds of migrant workers in India

    In the relatively rare instances when the spatialities of temporary migrant work, workers’ journeys, and labour-market negotiations have been the subject of scholarly attention, there has been little work that integrates time into the analysis. Building on a case study of low-paid and insecure migrant manual workers in the context of rapid economic growth in India, we examine both material and subjective dimensions of these workers’ spatiotemporal experiences. What does it mean to live life stretched out, multiplyattached to places across national space? What kinds of place attachments emerge for people temporarily sojourning in, rather than moving to, new places to reside and work? Our analysis of the spatiotemporalities of migrant workers’ experiences in India suggests that, over time, this group of workers use their own agency to seek to avoid the experience of humiliation and indignity in employment relations. Like David Harvey, we argue that money needs to be integrated into such analysis, along with space and time. The paper sheds light on processes of exclusion, inequality and diff erentiation, unequal power geometries, and social topographies that contrast with neoliberalist narratives of ‘Indian shining

    Abstract: The nuances of the application of schoolwide positive behavior supports (PBS) in an urban high school setting were investigated. Impact of implementation was measured using qualitative interviews and observations, including the School-wide Evaluation Tool (SET), Effective Behavior Support Survey, Student Climate Survey, and office disciplinary referrals. The results indicated that schoolwide PBS was implemented in an urban high school setting with some success. The overall level of implementation of PBS reached 80% as measured by the SET. Staff and teachers increased their level of perceived priority for implementing PBS in their school. A decrease in monthly discipline referrals to the office and the proportion of students who required secondary and tertiary supports was noted. These findings seem to indicate that PBS may be an important process for improving outcomes for teachers and students in urban high school settings
