Customer-engineer relationship management for converged ICT service companies
Thanks to the advent of converged communications services (often referred to as ‘triple play’), the next generation Service Engineer will need radically different skills, processes and tools from today’s counterpart. Why? in order to meet the challenges of installing and maintaining services based on multi-vendor software and hardware components in an IP-based network environment. The converged services environment is likely to be ‘smart’ and support flexible and dynamic interoperability between appliances and computing devices. These radical changes in the working environment will inevitably force managers to rethink the role of Service Engineers in relation to customer relationship management. This paper aims to identify requirements for an information system to support converged communications service engineers with regard to customer-engineer relationship management. Furthermore, an architecture for such a system is proposed and how it meets these requirements is discussed
Meningococcal Disease in Patients With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection: A Review of Cases Reported Through Active Surveillance in the United States, 2000-2008.
BackgroundAlthough human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is an established risk factor for several bacterial infections, the association between HIV infection and meningococcal disease remains unclear.MethodsExpanded chart reviews were completed on persons with meningococcal disease and HIV infection reported from 2000 through 2008 from 9 US sites participating in an active population-based surveillance system for meningococcal disease. The incidence of meningococcal disease among patients meeting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) surveillance criteria was estimated using data from the National HIV Surveillance System for the participating sites.ResultsThirty-three cases of meningococcal disease in individuals with HIV infection were reported from participating sites, representing 2.0% of all reported meningococcal disease cases. Most (75.8%) persons with HIV infection were adult males aged 25 to 64 years old. Among all meningococcal disease cases aged 25 to 64 years old, case fatality ratios were similar among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected persons (13.3% vs 10.6%; P = .6). The cumulative, mean incidence of meningococcal disease among patients aged 25 to 64 years old with HIV infection ever classified as AIDS was 3.5 cases per 100000 person years (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.1-5.6), compared with 0.3 cases per 100000 person years (95% CI, 0.3-0.3) for persons of the same age group not reported to have AIDS (relative risk = 12.9; 95% CI, 7.9-20.9).ConclusionsIndividuals with HIV infection meeting the AIDS surveillance case definition have a higher incidence of meningococcal disease compared with the general adult population
Top guns may not fire:Best-shot group contests with group-specific public good prizes
We analyze a group contest in which n groups compete to win a group-specific public good prize. Group sizes can be different and any player may value the prize differently within and across groups. Players exert costly efforts simultaneously and independently. Only the highest effort (the best-shot) within each group represents the group effort that determines the winning group. We fully characterize the set of equilibria and show that in any equilibrium at most one player in each group exerts strictly positive effort. There always exists an equilibrium in which only the highest value player in each active group exerts strictly positive effort. However, perverse equilibria may exist in which the highest value players completely free-ride on others by exerting no effort. We provide conditions under which the set of equilibria can be restricted and discuss contest design implications
South Korea's automotive labour regime, Hyundai Motors’ global production network and trade‐based integration with the European Union
This article explores the interrelationship between global production networks(GPNs) and free trade agreements (FTAs) in the South Korean auto industry and its employment relations. It focuses on the production network of the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) — the third biggest automobile manufacturer in the world — and the FTA between the EU and South Korea. This was the first of the EU’s ‘new generation’ FTAs, which among other things contained provisions designed to protect and promote labour standards. The article’s argument is twofold. First, that HMG’s production network and Korea’s political economy (of which HMG is a crucial part) limited the possibilities for the FTA’s labour provisions to take effect. Second, that the commercial provisions in this same FTA simultaneously eroded HMG’s domestic market and corporate profitability, leading to adverse consequences for auto workers in the more
insecure and low-paid jobs. In making this argument, the article advances a multiscalar conceptualization of the labour regime as an analytical intermediary between GPNs and FTAs. It also provides one of the first empirical studies of the EU–South Korea FTA in terms of employment relations, drawing on 105 interviews with trade unions, employer associations, automobile companies and state officials across both parties
Nonequilibrium Green's function theory for transport and gain properties of quantum cascade structures
The transport and gain properties of quantum cascade (QC) structures are
investigated using a nonequilibrium Green's function (NGF) theory which
includes quantum effects beyond a Boltzmann transport description. In the NGF
theory, we include interface roughness, impurity, and electron-phonon
scattering processes within a self-consistent Born approximation, and
electron-electron scattering in a mean-field approximation. With this theory we
obtain a description of the nonequilibrium stationary state of QC structures
under an applied bias, and hence we determine transport properties, such as the
current-voltage characteristic of these structures. We define two contributions
to the current, one contribution driven by the scattering-free part of the
Hamiltonian, and the other driven by the scattering Hamiltonian. We find that
the dominant part of the current in these structures, in contrast to simple
superlattice structures, is governed mainly by the scattering Hamiltonian. In
addition, by considering the linear response of the stationary state of the
structure to an applied optical field, we determine the linear susceptibility,
and hence the gain or absorption spectra of the structure. A comparison of the
spectra obtained from the more rigorous NGF theory with simpler models shows
that the spectra tend to be offset to higher values in the simpler theories.Comment: 44 pages, 16 figures, appearing in Physical Review B Dec 200
Dimensionality of superconductivity in the infinite-layer high-temperature cuprate Sr0.9M0.1CuO2 (M = La, Gd)
The high magnetic field phase diagram of the electron-doped infinite layer
high-temperature superconducting (high-T_c) compound Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 was
probed by means of penetration depth and magnetization measurements in pulsed
fields to 60 T. An anisotropy ratio of 8 was detected for the upper critical
fields with H parallel (H_{c2}^{ab}) and perpendicular (H_{c2}^c) to the CuO_2
planes, with H_{c2}^{ab} extrapolating to near the Pauli paramagnetic limit of
160 T. The longer superconducting coherence length than the lattice constant
along the c-axis indicates that the orbital degrees of freedom of the pairing
wavefunction are three dimensional. By contrast, low-field magnetization and
specific heat measurements of Sr_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}CuO_2 indicate a coexistence of
bulk s-wave superconductivity with large moment Gd paramagnetism close to the
CuO_2 planes, suggesting a strong confinement of the spin degrees of freedom of
the Cooper pair to the CuO_2 planes. The region between H_{c2}^{ab} and the
irreversibility line in the magnetization, H_{irr}^{ab}, is anomalously large
for an electron-doped high-T_c cuprate, suggesting the existence of additional

Associations between Fall Distance, Age, and Trauma Outcomes in Older Adult Patients
Introduction. Falls are the leading cause of injury death amongolder adults. This study sought to determine if there are differencesbetween fall distance (ground level vs greater than groundlevel) and age (old vs very old) in terms of in-hospital mortality,orthopedic consultations, and neurological consultations.
Methods. A retrospective trauma registry review was conductedof older adult patients (aged > 65 years), admitted to aMidwestern Level I trauma facility (2005 - 2010) due to a fall.Results. Of the 1,064 patients analyzed, the majority fell fromground level compared to greater than ground level (64% and36%, respectively). Median age was 80 years. Fall distance wasnot associated significantly with in-hospital mortality (OR0.88; CI 0.50 - 1.54) or neurological consultations (OR 1.02; CI0.72 - 1.43), but was associated with orthopedic consultations(OR 1.49; CI 1.09 - 2.04). Age was not associated with in-hospitalmortality or neurological or orthopedic consultations.
Conclusions. Fall distance was not associated with in-hospitalmortality or receiving a neurological consultation.However, older adults who fell from greater than groundlevel were more likely to receive orthopedic consultations.There were no differences in in-hospital mortality or receivinga neurological or orthopedic consultation based onage. These findings indicated that as the older adult populationincreases, burden of care will increase for trauma centersand neurological services. KS J Med 2016;9(3):54-57
