    Instants and Instantaneous Velocity

As Frank Arntzenius has shown, instantaneous velocity continues to pose philosophical puzzles. Here I recap the flaws involved in all three standard theories of velocity-the 'at-at' theory plus the calculus, impetus or dispositional theories and `no-instants' theories. Next, I argue that, although it avoids the problems with impetus theories identified by Arntzenius, Marc Lange's dispositional theory of velocity suffers from its own variety of philosophical perplexity. I conclude by arguing for a modified `no-instants' theory, inspired by Aristotle's responses to Zeno's paradoxes, that avoids the problems for the versions considered by Arntzenius. In addition, this theory points the way to a more philosophically perspicuous account of the internal structure of time

Using assessment criteria to support student learning

Since 1998, a skills module for level 1 BSc Psychology students at City campus (formerly London Guildhall University) has been an important part of the department’s strategy to improve students’ baseline and study skills. The discipline-based skills module combines generic and subject-specific skills teaching, links skills provision with the personal tutor system, and includes practical exercises to promote deep learning and improve study skills. One of the exercises involved familiarising students with the Psychology assessment criteria, and this work led to a project to develop tailored resources based on assessment criteria to support students and improve the quality of assessment

Clips as a knowledge based language

CLIPS is a language for writing expert systems applications on a personal or small computer. Here, the CLIPS programming language is described and compared to three other artificial intelligence (AI) languages (LISP, Prolog, and OPS5) with regard to the processing they provide for the implementation of a knowledge based system (KBS). A discussion is given on how CLIPS would be used in a control system

Development and experimentation of an eye/brain/task testbed

The principal objective is to develop a laboratory testbed that will provide a unique capability to elicit, control, record, and analyze the relationship of operator task loading, operator eye movement, and operator brain wave data in a computer system environment. The ramifications of an integrated eye/brain monitor to the man machine interface are staggering. The success of such a system would benefit users of space and defense, paraplegics, and the monitoring of boring screens (nuclear power plants, air defense, etc.

Guest Statute: Equal Protection Challenge to Constitutionality

Sidle v. Majors, 536 F.2d 1156, cert. denied, 97 S. Ct. 366 (1976). Automobile guest statutes, which deny recovery to a nonpaying automobile passenger injured as a result of his host driver\u27s ordinary negligence, have existed at one time or another in twenty-eight states. All guest statutes were enacted between 1927 and 1939, and since their inception have been subject to some praise and much criticism. Since the Supreme Court of California struck down that state\u27s guest statute in Brown v. Merlo, numerous other states have had to decide the fate of their guest statutes as a result of constitutional challenges based on the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment. Sidle v. Majors presented for the first time to a United States Court of Appeals an equal protection challenge to a state guest statute

Spacelab Program Preparations for First Flight and Projected Utilization

    Get PDF
The initial flight of the European built Spacelab Pressure Module will introduce to the Space Transportation System capability a shirt sleeve laboratory environment that will serve a broad range of Science and Technology users. This paper provides a brief description of the maiden mission and a status report on the preparations for that mission. The planned utilization of the European provided Spacelab hardware, as reflected by the Spacelab Mission Manifest, will be discussed along with plans for developing dedicated discipline laboratories, a mixed cargo Spacelab pallet system and a capability for opportunity payloads and experiments
