Alternating magnetic anisotropy of Li(Li)N with = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni
Substantial amounts of the transition metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni can be
substituted for Li in single crystalline Li(Li)N. Isothermal and
temperature-dependent magnetization measurements reveal local magnetic moments
with magnitudes significantly exceeding the spin-only value. The additional
contributions stem from unquenched orbital moments that lead to rare-earth-like
behavior of the magnetic properties. Accordingly, extremely large magnetic
anisotropies have been found. Most notably, the magnetic anisotropy alternates
as easy-plane easy-axis easy-plane
easy-axis when progressing from = Mn Fe Co
Ni. This behavior can be understood based on a perturbation
approach in an analytical, single-ion model. The calculated magnetic
anisotropies show a surprisingly good agreement with the experiment and capture

Long-term Periodicities in the Flux from Low Mass X-ray Binaries
Using data from the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer
(RXTE) we have searched for long term periodicities in the X-ray flux of GX
1+4, Sco X-2 (GX 349+2), and GX 339-4. For GX 1+4 we also used data from BATSE
and Galactic Centre scans performed by RXTE. We find no evidence for X-ray
modulations at the suggested ~304 d orbital period of GX 1+4. However, we find
tentative evidence for a periodicity at 420 d to 460 d. An upper limit of 15%
peak-to-peak is set on any sinusoidal modulation in the 1.5 - 3.0 keV flux of
Sco X-2 for periods in the 30 to 100 d range. For GX 339-4 we confirm the Low
State modulation and report the detection of significant low-frequency
modulations in both the High State and Very High State. We fail to detect this
modulation in the Off State. We show that if the reported orbital period of GX
339-4 lies in the range 0.5 - 1.7 d, then it is not present in the RXTE ASM

Prognostic indicators in peritoneal carcinomatosis from gastrointestinal cancer
Peritoneal carcinomatosis from gastrointestinal cancer has new treatment options for surgical management. The approach uses cytoreductive surgery which combines peritonectomy and visceral resection in an effort to remove all visible cancer within the abdomen and pelvis. Then the peritoneal cavity is flooded with chemotherapy solution in an attempt to eradicate residual disease. In order to select patients for this approach the quantitative prognostic indicators for carcinomatosis were reviewed, compared and contrasted. Prognostic indicators to be used to select patients for this aggressive approach at the initiation of surgery and after completion of cytoreduction were studied. Four quantitative assessments to be used at the time of abdominal exploration were the Gilly staging, Japanese gastric cancer P score, peritoneal cancer index (PCI), and the simplified peritoneal cancer index (SPCI). All have value with the PCI being the most validated and most precise. Preoperative assessments include the tumor histopathology and the prior surgical score. The completeness of cytoreduction score is an assessment of residual disease after a maximal surgical effort. An opportunity for long-term survival following treatment for carcinomatosis requires a complete cytoreduction in all reports for gastrointestinal cancer. Quantitative prognostic indicators need to be knowledgeably employed when patients with carcinomatosis are being treated. Improved patient selection with greater benefit and reduced morbidity and mortality should result
Modulatory effects of positive mood and approach motivation on reward processing : two sides of the same coin?
In a previous study (Paul & Pourtois, 2017), we found that positive mood substantially influenced the neural processing of reward, mostly by altering expectations and creating an optimistic bias. Under positive mood, the Reward Positivity (RewP) component and fronto-medial theta activity (FM theta) in response to monetary feedback were both changed compared with neutral mood. Nevertheless, whether positive valence per se or motivational intensity drove these neurophysiological effects remained unclear. To address this question, we combined a mindset manipulation with an imagery procedure to create and maintain three different affective states using a between-subjects design: a neutral mood, and positive mood with either high or low motivational intensity. After mood induction, 161 participants performed a simple gambling task while 64-channel EEG was recorded. FM theta activity results showed that irrespective of motivational intensity, positive compared with neutral mood altered reward expectancy. By comparison, RewP was not affected by positive mood nor motivational intensity. These results suggest that positive mood, rather than motivational intensity, is likely driving the change in reward expectation during gambling, which could reflect the presence of an optimistic bias. Moreover, at the methodological level, they confirm that the RewP ERP component and FM theta activity can capture dissociable effects during reward processing
Dramatic Changes in the Electronic Structure Upon Transition to the Collapsed Tetragonal Phase in CaFe2As2
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density
functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the electronic structure of
CaFeAs in previously unexplored collapsed tetragonal (CT) phase. This
unusual phase of the iron arsenic high temperature superconductors was hard to
measure as it exists only under pressure. By inducing internal strain, via the
post growth, thermal treatment of the single crystals, we were able to
stabilize the CT phase at ambient-pressure. We find significant differences in
the Fermi surface topology and band dispersion data from the more common
orthorhombic-antiferromagnetic or tetragonal-paramagnetic phases, consistent
with electronic structure calculations. The top of the hole bands sinks below
the Fermi level, which destroys the nesting present in parent phases. The
absence of nesting in this phase along with apparent loss of Fe magnetic
moment, are now clearly experimentally correlated with the lack of
