    Characterizing the University of California's tenure-track teaching position from the faculty and administrator perspectives.

    Teaching faculty are a potential mechanism to generate positive change in undergraduate STEM education. One such type of faculty is the Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (L(P)SOE), a tenure-track faculty line within the University of California (UC) system. As a foundation for future studies, we sought to characterize individuals in the L(P)SOE position in terms of their background training, job expectations, and resources available for their success. Data were collected through an online survey completed by over 80% of STEM L(P)SOEs across the UC system, as well as interviews with over 20 deans and chairs in STEM departments at three UC campuses. From this work, we found that the majority of current L(P)SOEs were formally trained within their disciplines and not in an education field; however, they possessed substantial education experience, such as classroom teaching or participation in professional development opportunities. Expectations for time spent on teaching, research, and service are aligned between individuals within varying ranks of the L(P)SOE faculty and between L(P)SOEs and administrators. L(P)SOEs and administrators are also in agreement about what constitutes acceptable professional development activities. Interestingly, we identified differences that may reflect changes in the position over time, including increased start-up funds for more recently hired L(P)SOE faculty and a differing perspective on the role of discipline-based education research and scholarly activities between non-tenured and more senior L(P)SOEs. Overall, these data provide a snapshot of the L(P)SOE position that will aid in future work to identify the potential institutional impact of these individuals

    We study the partition function of the free Sp(N) conformal field theory recently conjectured to be dual to asymptotically de Sitter higher-spin gravity in four-dimensions. We compute the partition function of this CFT on a round sphere as a function of a finite mass deformation, on a squashed sphere as a function of the squashing parameter, and on an S2xS1 geometry as a function of the relative size of S2 and S1. We find that the partition function is divergent at large negative mass in the first case, and for small S1S^1 in the third case. It is globally peaked at zero squashing in the second case. Through the duality this partition function contains information about the wave function of the universe. We show that the divergence at small S1 occurs also in Einstein gravity if certain complex solutions are included, but the divergence in the mass parameter is new. We suggest an interpretation for this divergence as indicating an instability of de Sitter space in higher spin gravity, consistent with general arguments that de Sitter space cannot be stable in quantum gravity.Comment: 30 pages plus appendices, 6 figure

    Burst avalanches in solvable models of fibrous materials

    We review limiting models for fracture in bundles of fibers, with statistically distributed thresholds for breakdown of individual fibers. During the breakdown process, avalanches consisting of simultaneous rupture of several fibers occur, and the distribution D(Δ)D(\Delta) of the magnitude Δ\Delta of such avalanches is the central characteristics in our analysis. For a bundle of parallel fibers two limiting models of load sharing are studied and contrasted: the global model in which the load carried by a bursting fiber is equally distributed among the surviving members, and the local model in which the nearest surviving neighbors take up the load. For the global model we investigate in particular the conditions on the threshold distribution which would lead to anomalous behavior, i.e. deviations from the asymptotics D(Δ)Δ5/2D(\Delta) \sim \Delta^{-5/2}, known to be the generic behavior. For the local model no universal power-law asymptotics exists, but we show for a particular threshold distribution how the avalanche distribution can nevertheless be explicitly calculated in the large-bundle limit.Comment: 28 pages, RevTeX, 3 Postscript figure

    On the nature of estuarine circulation : part I (chapters 3 and 4)

    The reader will quickly see that the subject matter of Chapter 3 is confined to the hydraulics of sharply stratified media, whereas real estuaries are always more or less diffusely stratified. What is more, no discussion is made of the order of magnitude of the friction terms. In ordinary single layer flow (such as in rivers) engineers already have crude approximations of the friction terms (Chezy and Manning formulas), but we do not have even these approximations for two layer flow. For this reason the differential equations of gradually varied flow of two layers are for the most part left unintegrated and all that is demonstrated is the qualitative aspects of the flow. In the case of entrainment of water from one layer into another we can only perform integrations of the equations when the amount of entrainment is known, whereas in real estuaries we do not have a priori knowledge of this amount. The reader will see, therefore, that the subject matter of Chapter 3 is really very incomplete, leaving undetermined all the constants which depend upon turbulent mixing, upon the frictional stresses on the bottom, and the free surface and the walls, and upon the amount of entrainment. The contents of Chapter 4 are somewhat different. First of all, they contain summaries of several of these papers have proceeded on the basis of hypotheses already published papers on the mixing in estuaries. The applicability of these hypotheses appears to be restricted to only certain estuaries, and it must be admitted that more work has been done that involves guessing what the mixing processes in an estuary might be, than has been done in trying to find out what the mixing processes in an estuary actually are. As incomplete as the subject matter of Chapter 4 is, it is hoped that it will suggest which of the possible mixing processes in estuaries may be important in any particular one which is the subject of study, and that it will also suggest the type of observations which will be most desirable in studying a particular estuary. For example: in an unstratified estuary it seems that a more or less uniform spacing of stations up and down the estuary is desirable; but in an estuary which appears to be subject to the constraint of overmixing (Section 4.51) the location of stations should be largely confined to control sections.Office of Naval Research under Contract No. N6onr-27701 (NR-083-004)

    Threshold concepts: Impacts on teaching and learning at tertiary level

    This project explored teaching and learning of hard-to-learn threshold concepts in first-year English, an electrical engineering course, leadership courses, and in doctoral writing. The project was envisioned to produce disciplinary case studies that lecturers could use to reflect on and refine their curriculum and pedagogy, thereby contributing to discussion about the relationship between theory and methodology in higher education research (Shay, Ashwin, & Case, 2009). A team of seven academics investigated lecturers’ awareness and emergent knowledge of threshold concepts and associated pedagogies and how such pedagogies can afford opportunities for learning. As part of this examination the lecturers also explored the role of threshold concept theory in designing curricula and sought to find the commonalities in threshold concepts and their teaching and learning across the four disciplines. The research highlights new ways of teaching threshold concepts to help students learn concepts that are fundamental to the disciplines they are studying and expand their educational experiences. Given that much of the international research in this field focuses on the identification of threshold concepts and debates their characteristics (Barradell, 2013; Flanagan, 2014; Knight, Callaghan, Baldock, & Meyer, 2013), our exploration of what happens when lecturers use threshold concept theory to re-envision their curriculum and teaching helps to address a gap within the field. By addressing an important theoretical and practical approach the project makes a considerable contribution to teaching and learning at the tertiary level in general and to each discipline in particular

    Familiarity for Associations? A Test of the Domain Dichotomy Theory

    Episodic recognition memory is mediated by functionally separable retrieval processes, notably familiarity (a general sense of prior exposure) and recollection (the retrieval of contextual details), whose relative engagement depends partly on the nature of the information being retrieved. Currently, the specific contribution of familiarity to associative recognition memory (where retrieval of the relationships between pairs of stimuli is required) is not clearly understood. Here we test domain dichotomy theory, which predicts that familiarity should contribute more to associative memory when stimuli are similar (within-domain) than when they are distinct (between-domain). Participants studied stimulus pairs, and at test, discriminated intact from rearranged pairs. Stimuli were either within-domain (name-name or image-image pairs) or between-domain (name-image pairs). Across experiments we employed two different behavioural measures of familiarity, based on ROC curves and a Modified Remember-Know procedure. Both experiments provided evidence that familiarity can contribute to associative recognition; however familiarity was stronger for between-domain pairs - in direct contrast to the domain dichotomy prediction
