Imaging of a vibrating object by Sideband Digital Holography
We obtain quantitative measurements of the oscillation amplitude of vibrating
objects by using sideband digital holography. The frequency sidebands on the
light scattered by the object, shifted by n times the vibration frequency, are
selectively detected by heterodyne holography, and images of the object are
calculated for different orders n. Orders up to n=120 have been observed,
allowing the measurement of amplitudes of oscillation that are significantly
larger than the optical wavelength. Using the positions of the zeros of
intensity for each value of n, we reconstruct the shape of vibration the

Relationships between Larval and Juvenile Abundance of Winter-Spawned Fishes in North Carolina, USA
We analyzed the relationships between the larval and juvenile abundances of selected estuarine-dependent fishes that spawn during the winter in continental shelf waters of the U.S. Atlantic coast. Six species were included in the analysis based on their ecological and economic importance and relative abundance in available surveys: spot Leiostomus xanthurus, pinfish Lagodon rhomboides, southern flounder Paralichthys lethostigma, summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus, Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus, and Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus. Cross-correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between the larval and juvenile abundances within species. Tests of synchrony across species were used to find similarities in recruitment dynamics for species with similar winter shelf-spawning life-history strategies. Positive correlations were found between the larval and juvenile abundances for three of the six selected species (spot, pinfish, and southern flounder). These three species have similar geographic ranges that primarily lie south of Cape Hatteras. There were no significant correlations between the larval and juvenile abundances for the other three species (summer flounder, Atlantic croaker, and Atlantic menhaden); we suggest several factors that could account for the lack of a relationship. Synchrony was found among the three southern species within both the larval and juvenile abundance time series. These results provide support for using larval ingress measures as indices of abundance for these and other species with similar geographic ranges and winter shelf-spawning life-history strategies

Charge injection instability in perfect insulators
We show that in a macroscopic perfect insulator, charge injection at a
field-enhancing defect is associated with an instability of the insulating
state or with bistability of the insulating and the charged state. The effect
of a nonlinear carrier mobility is emphasized. The formation of the charged
state is governed by two different processes with clearly separated time
scales. First, due to a fast growth of a charge-injection mode, a localized
charge cloud forms near the injecting defect (or contact). Charge injection
stops when the field enhancement is screened below criticality. Secondly, the
charge slowly redistributes in the bulk. The linear instability mechanism and
the final charged steady state are discussed for a simple model and for
cylindrical and spherical geometries. The theory explains an experimentally
observed increase of the critical electric field with decreasing size of the
injecting contact. Numerical results are presented for dc and ac biased

Formation and Structure of a Current Sheet in Pulsed-Power Driven Magnetic Reconnection Experiments
We describe magnetic reconnection experiments using a new, pulsed-power
driven experimental platform in which the inflows are super-sonic but
sub-Alfv\'enic.The intrinsically magnetised plasma flows are long lasting,
producing a well-defined reconnection layer that persists over many
hydrodynamic time scales.The layer is diagnosed using a suite of high
resolution laser based diagnostics which provide measurements of the electron
density, reconnecting magnetic field, inflow and outflow velocities and the
electron and ion temperatures.Using these measurements we observe a balance
between the power flow into and out of the layer, and we find that the heating
rates for the electrons and ions are significantly in excess of the classical
predictions. The formation of plasmoids is observed in laser interferometry and
optical self-emission, and the magnetic O-point structure of these plasmoids is

An Experimental Platform for Pulsed-Power Driven Magnetic Reconnection
We describe a versatile pulsed-power driven platform for magnetic
reconnection experiments, based on exploding wire arrays driven in parallel
[Suttle, L. G. et al. PRL, 116, 225001]. This platform produces inherently
magnetised plasma flows for the duration of the generator current pulse (250
ns), resulting in a long-lasting reconnection layer. The layer exists for long
enough to allow evolution of complex processes such as plasmoid formation and
movement to be diagnosed by a suite of high spatial and temporal resolution
laser-based diagnostics. We can access a wide range of magnetic reconnection
regimes by changing the wire material or moving the electrodes inside the wire
arrays. We present results with aluminium and carbon wires, in which the
parameters of the inflows and the layer which forms are significantly
different. By moving the electrodes inside the wire arrays, we change how
strongly the inflows are driven. This enables us to study both symmetric
reconnection in a range of different regimes, and asymmetric reconnection.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. Version revised to include referee's comments.

The omnivorous Tyrolean Iceman: colon contents (meat, cereals, pollen, moss and whipworm) and stable isotope analyses
The contents of the colon of the Tyrolean Iceman who lived Ga. 5300 years ago include muscle fibres, cereal remains, a diversity of pollen, and most notably that of the hop hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia) retaining cellular contents, as well as a moss leaf (Neckera complanata) and eggs of the parasitic whipworm (Trichuris trichiura). Based almost solely on stable isotope analyses and ignoring the work on the colon contents, two recently published papers on the Iceman's diet draw ill- founded conclusions about vegetarianism and even veganism. Neither the pollen nor the moss is likely to have been deliberately consumed as food by the Iceman. All the available evidence concerning the Iceman's broad-based diet is reviewed and the significance of the colon contents for matters other than assessment of food intake is outlined
Serum Neurofilament Light, Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein and Tau Are Possible Serum Biomarkers for Activity of Brain Metastases and Gliomas
BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors and brain metastases (BMs) are major causes of morbidity and mortality, accompanied by low survival rates. Efforts to early discovery of CNS malignancies are critical. However, to date, there are no biomarkers approved for detection of cancer activity in the brain. Blood levels of neurofilament light (NfL) and tau, as well as glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAp), show promise as biomarkers for brain injury in previous studies. Therefore, we performed a cross-sectional study to investigate correlations of those biomarkers with CNS activity of gliomas and BMs. METHODS: Serum samples of 36 participants of a single centered institution were tested for NfL, GFAp and tau with Simoa immunoassay, and correlated with clinical and radiological data. RESULTS: fL and GFAp levels were significantly associated with the state of intracranial disease (analysis of variance (ANOVA), P_{sNfL} = 0.03; ANOVA, P_{GFAp} = 0.03). Although statistically significant (P = 0.04), differences in concentrations were not clinically meaningful for tau levels. Serum NfL (sNfL) and GFAp concentrations were higher in the group of patients with CNS tumors with disease in progression versus CNS with stable disease (P = 0.03 and P = 0.01, respectively). In addition, sNfL were higher in patients with metastatic solid tumors with known BMs than in those with metastatic tumors with no BM (P = 0.0004). CONCLUSION: sNfL and GFAp both apparently vary closely with presence and activity of gliomas and BMs. Further studies in larger populations are needed to expand these findings
Why do dogs (Canis familiaris) select the empty container in an observational learning task?
Many argue that dogs show unique susceptibility to human communicative signals that make them suitable for being engaged in complex co-operation with humans. It has also been revealed that socially provided information is particularly effective in influencing the behaviour of dogs even when the human’s action demonstration conveys inefficient or mistaken solution of task. It is unclear, however, how the communicative nature of the demonstration context and the presence of the human demonstrator affect the dogs’ object-choice behaviour in observational learning situations. In order to unfold the effects of these factors, 76 adult pet dogs could observe a communicative or a non-communicative demonstration in which the human retrieved a tennis ball from under an opaque container while manipulating another distant and obviously empty (transparent) one. Subjects were then allowed to choose either in the presence of the demonstrator or after she left the room. Results showed a significant main effect of the demonstration context (presence or absence of the human’s communicative signals), and we also found some evidence for the response-modifying effect of the presence of the human demonstrator during the dogs’ choice. That is, dogs predominantly chose the baited container, but if the demonstration context was communicative and the human was present during the dogs’ choice, subjects’ tendency to select the baited container has been reduced. In agreement with the studies showing sensitivity to human’s communicative signals in dogs, these findings point to a special form of social influence in observational learning situations when it comes to learning about causally opaque and less efficient (compared to what comes natural to the dog) action demonstrations
Getting it right matters: temperature goal interpretations in geoscience research
The adoption of the 1.5°C long‐term warming limit in the Paris Agreement made 1.5°C a “hot topic” in the scientific community, with researchers eager to address this issue. Long‐term warming limits have a decade‐long history in international policy. To effectively inform the climate policy debate, geoscience research hence needs a core understanding of their legal and policy context. Here we describe this context in detail and illustrate its importance by showing the impact it can have on global carbon budget estimates. We show that definitional clarity is essential on this important matter
