    dissertationThis dissertation is to theoretically and empirically explore how development impacts the environment in the largest developing country in the world from the perspective of sociology of development, and environmental and urban sociology. This dissertation focuses on the context of China, reviews the development trajectories adopted during the past more than six decades, and presents the spatial and temporal pattern of environmental degradation across regions and over time. Then, this dissertation empirically examines the relationship between development and environmental degradation answering the following questions: (1) whether economic development level is positively or negatively associated with air and water pollution; (2) whether industrialization, urbanization and globalization (international trade and Foreign Direct Investment inflows) are positively or negatively associated with air and water pollution; (3) how the impact has changed across regions and over time; and (4) how the sources of foreign capital have differentially affected environmental pollution across cities and over time. The dissertation presents how economic development level (GDP per capita as the indicator), globalization, industrialization and urbanization have impact on air and water pollution respectively across regions and over time, and examines whether globalization, industrialization and urbanization serves as the pathways in the association between development and environmental pollution in such a rapid economy with the most population in the world. Multilevel modeling is used to analyze the longitudinal data at the city level from 2004 to2013. The findings confirm that there is inverted-U shape only between economic development and SO2 emission (not for dust emission or water pollution), indicating whether Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) holds depending on the specific indicators of environmental degradation analyzed. More importantly, the results show that industrialization and urbanization are more likely to positively impact air pollution, while there is no strong evidence supporting that globalization has impact on air pollution. Meanwhile, industrialization and globalization are more likely to positively impact water pollution, while population density is negatively associated with water pollution

    Clinical phenotype of a Kallmann syndrome patient with IL17RD and CPEB4 variants

    BackgroundThis study aimed to characterize the clinical phenotype and genetic variations in patients with Kallmann syndrome (KS).MethodsThis study involved the collection and analysis of clinical data from an individual with sporadic KS. Following this, peripheral blood samples were obtained from the patient and his parents. Genomic deoxyribonucleic acid was extracted and subjected to whole-exome sequencing and genomic copy number variation (CNV) detection. Finally, Sanger sequencing was performed to validate the suspected pathogenic variants.ResultsWhole-exome sequencing confirmed that the child carried both the IL17RD variant (c.2101G>A, p.Gly701Ser) inherited from the mother and the new CPEB4 variant (c.1414C>T, p.Arg472*). No pathogenic CNVs were identified in CNV testing.ConclusionBioinformatics analysis shows that the IL17RD protein undergoing Gly701Ser mutation and is speculated to be phosphorylated and modified, thereby disrupting fibroblast growth factor signaling. This study also suggested that the CPEB4 might play a crucial role in the key signaling process affecting olfactory bulb morphogenesis. Overall, the findings of this study broaden the gene expression profile of KS-related pathogenic genes. This offers a new avenue for exploring the pathogenic mechanism of KS and provides valuable insights for precise clinical diagnosis and treatment strategies for this condition

    Cosmc Deficiency Causes Spontaneous Autoimmunity by Breaking B Cell Tolerance

    Factors regulating the induction and development of B cellā€“mediated autoimmunity are not well understood. Here, we report that targeted deletion in murine B cells of X-linked Cosmc, encoding the chaperone required for expression of core 1 O-glycans, causes the spontaneous development of autoimmune pathologies due to a breakdown of B cell tolerance. BC-CosmcKO mice display multiple phenotypic abnormalities, including severe weight loss, ocular manifestations, lymphadenopathy, and increased female-associated mortality. Disruption of B cell tolerance in BC-CosmcKO mice is manifested as elevated self-reactive IgM and IgG autoantibodies. Cosmc-deficient B cells exhibit enhanced basal activation and responsiveness to stimuli. There is also an elevated frequency of spontaneous germinal center B cells in BC-CosmcKO mice. Mechanistically, loss of Cosmc confers enhanced B cell receptor (BCR) signaling through diminished BCR internalization. The results demonstrate that Cosmc, through control of core 1 O-glycans, is a previously unidentified immune checkpoint gene in maintaining B cell tolerance

    Large-scale online collaborative production activities in open-source communities must be accompanied by large-scale communication activities. Nowadays, the production activities of open-source communities, especially their communication activities, have been more and more concerned. Take CodePlex C # community for example, this paper constructs the complex network models of 12 periods of communication structures of the community based on real data; then discusses the basic concepts of quantum mapping of complex networks, and points out that the purpose of the mapping is to study the structures of complex networks according to the idea of quantum mechanism in studying the structures of large molecules; finally, according to this idea, analyzes and compares the fractal features of the spectra in different quantum mappings of the networks, and concludes that there are multiple self-similarity and criticality in the communication structures of the community. In addition, this paper discusses the insights and application conditions of different quantum mappings in revealing the characteristics of the structures. The proposed quantum mapping method can also be applied to the structural studies of other large-scale organizations

    A New Differential Mutation Based Adaptive Harmony Search Algorithm for Global Optimization

    The canonical harmony search (HS) algorithm generates a new solution by using random adjustment. However, the beneficial effects of harmony memory are not well considered. In order to make full use of harmony memory to generate new solutions, this paper proposes a new adaptive harmony search algorithm (aHSDE) with a differential mutation, periodic learning and linear population size reduction strategy for global optimization. Differential mutation is used for pitch adjustment, which provides a promising direction guidance to adjust the bandwidth. To balance the diversity and convergence of harmony memory, a linear reducing strategy of harmony memory is proposed with iterations. Meanwhile, periodic learning is used to adaptively modify the pitch adjusting rate and the scaling factor to improve the adaptability of the algorithm. The effects and the cooperation of the proposed strategies and the key parameters are analyzed in detail. Experimental comparison among well-known HS variants and several state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms on CEC 2014 benchmark indicates that the aHSDE has a very competitive performance

    Transcriptomic analysis reveals the crosstalk between type 2 diabetes and chronic pancreatitis

    Abstract Background and Aims Mounting evidence highlights a strong association between chronic pancreatitis (CP) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), although the exact mechanism of interaction remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the crosstalk genes and pathogenesis between CP and T2D. Methods Transcriptomic gene expression profiles of CP and T2D were extracted from Gene Expression Omnibus, respectively, and the common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were subsequently identified. Further analysis, such as Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), proteinā€“protein interaction, transcription factors (TFs), microRNA (miRNAs), and candidate chemicals identification, was performed to explore the possible common signatures between the two diseases. Results In total, we acquired 281 common DEGs by interacting CP and T2D datasets, and identified 10 hub genes using CytoHubba. GO and KEGG analyses revealed that endoplasmic reticulum stress and mitochondrial dysfunction were closely related to these common DEGs. Among the shared genes, EEF2, DLD, RAB5A, and SLC30A9 showed promising diagnostic value for both diseases based on receiver operating characteristic curve and precisionā€recall curves. Additionally, we identified 16 key TFs and 16 miRNAs that were strongly correlated with the hub genes, which may serve as new molecular targets for CP and T2D. Finally, candidate chemicals that might become potential drugs for treating CP and T2D were screened out. Conclusion This study provides evidence that there are shared genes and pathological signatures between CP and T2D. The genes EEF2, DLD, RAB5A, and SLC30A9 have been identified as having the highest diagnostic efficiency and could be served as biomarkers for these diseases, providing new insights into precise diagnosis and treatment for CP and T2D
