    A Measurement of n(g->cc) using D* Mesons

    Get PDF
At LEP I charm quarks are mainly produced directly from the Z decay or via the decay of bottom hadrons. A third source is a primary quark radiating a hard gluon which then splits into a ccbar pair. This process is predicted to occur in approximately 1.5% of all hadronic Z decays. The data collected with the ALEPH detector from 1991 to 1995 have been investigated to look for this process. Charm quarks are tagged by reconstructing D*+- mesons via their decay D*+ -> D0 pi+ -> K- pi+ pi+. D*'s from gluon splitting are mostly found in a high--mass hemisphere. Fitting the hemisphere mass distribution for events with reconstructed D*'s, the contribution of g -> D* is extracted. The average multiplicity n(g->cc) of charm quark pairs from gluon splitting in hadronic Z decays is measured

On the Nucleon Distribution Amplitude: The Heterotic Solution

We present a new nucleon distribution amplitude which amalgamates features of the Chernyak-Ogloblin-Zhitnitsky model with those of the Gari-Stefanis model. This "heterotic" solution provides the possibility to have asymptotically a small ratio \hbox{∣GMn∣/GMp≀0.1\vert G_{M}^{n}\vert/G_{M}^{p}\le 0.1}, while fulfilling most of the sum-rule requirements up to the third order. Using this nucleon distribution amplitude we calculate the electromagnetic and weak nucleon form factors, the transition form factor ÎłpΔ+\gamma p \Delta^{+} and the decay widths of the charmonium levels 3S1^3S_{1}, 3P1^3P_{1}, and 3P2^3P_{2} into ppˉp\bar p. The agreement with the available data is remarkable in all cases.Comment: 15 pages, RUB-TPII-21/92 Preprin

The Generalized Gell-Mann--Low Theorem for Relativistic Bound States

    Get PDF
The recently established generalized Gell-Mann--Low theorem is applied in lowest perturbative order to bound-state calculations in a simple scalar field theory with cubic couplings. The approach via the generalized Gell-Mann--Low Theorem retains, while being fully relativistic, many of the desirable features of the quantum mechanical approaches to bound states. In particular, no abnormal or unphysical solutions are found in the model under consideration. Both the non-relativistic and one-body limits are straightforward and consistent. The results for the spectrum are compared to those of the Bethe-Salpeter equation (in the ladder approximation) and related equations.Comment: 24 pages, 6 pspicture diagrams, 4 postscript figure

Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions

Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) < 0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV

A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81 GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the 95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure

Search for CP Violation in the Decay Z -> b (b bar) g

About three million hadronic decays of the Z collected by ALEPH in the years 1991-1994 are used to search for anomalous CP violation beyond the Standard Model in the decay Z -> b \bar{b} g. The study is performed by analyzing angular correlations between the two quarks and the gluon in three-jet events and by measuring the differential two-jet rate. No signal of CP violation is found. For the combinations of anomalous CP violating couplings, h^b=h^AbgVb−h^VbgAb{\hat{h}}_b = {\hat{h}}_{Ab}g_{Vb}-{\hat{h}}_{Vb}g_{Ab} and hb∗=h^Vb2+h^Ab2h^{\ast}_b = \sqrt{\hat{h}_{Vb}^{2}+\hat{h}_{Ab}^{2}}, limits of \hat{h}_b < 0.59and and h^{\ast}_{b} < 3.02$ are given at 95\% CL.Comment: 8 pages, 1 postscript figure, uses here.sty, epsfig.st

Measurement of the W mass in e+e−e^+ e^- collisions at 183 GeV

    No full text
The mass of the W boson is obtained from reconstructed invariant mass distributions in W-pair events. The sample of W pairs is selected from 57 pb−1^{-1} collected with the ALEPH detector in 1997 at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The invariant mass distributions of reweighted Monte Carlo events are fitted separately to the experimental distributions in the qqbarqqbarqqbarqqbar and all l\nuqqbar channels to give the following W masses: mWhadronic=80.461±0.177(stat.)±0.045(syst.)±0.056(theory)GeV/c2m_{W}^{hadronic} = 80.461 \pm 0.177(stat.) \pm 0.045(syst.) \pm 0.056(theory) GeV/c^2, mWsemileptonic=80.326±0.184(stat.)±0.040(syst.)GeV/c2m_{W}^{semileptonic} = 80.326 \pm 0.184(stat.) \pm 0.040(syst.) GeV/c^2 where the theory error represents the possible effects of final state interactions. The combination of these two measurements, including the LEP energy calibration uncertainty, gives $m_{W} = 80.393 \pm 0.128(stat.)\pm 0.041(syst.) \pm 0.028(theory)\pm 0.021(LEP) GeV/c^2

Search for Bs0B^{0}_{s} oscillations using inclusive lepton events

    Get PDF
A search for Bs oscillations is performed using a sample of semileptonic b-hadron decays collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991-1995. Compared to previous inclusive lepton analyses, the prop er time resolution and b-flavour mistag rate are significantly improved. Additional sensitivity to Bs mixing is obtained by identifying subsamples of events having a Bs purity which is higher than the average for the whole data sample. Unbinned maximum likelihood amplitude fits are performed to derive a lower limit of Dms>9.5 ps-1 at 95% CL. Combining with the ALEPH Ds based analyses yields Dms>9.6 ps-1 at 95% CL.A search for B0s oscillations is performed using a sample of semileptonic b-hadron decays collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991-1995.
