    Expressivity and Musical Shape in Turntablism: Response to Greasley and Prior

    This commentary to Greasley and Prior’s paper “Mixtapes and turntablism: DJs’ perspective on musical shape” extends the findings of the study by looking at the turntablism perspective. First, a general discussion on the study’s method and background is given. Then, the role of turntables as musical instruments in creating musical shape is outlined. Finally, some relationships between turntablism techniques, expressive performances and musical shape are presented. In general, the findings in the study support previously published studies in this insufficiently researched area

    We analyze a model of multi firm competition between mobile network operators. The model assumes inelastic usage demand and full penetration, and allows for asymmetric termination rates, differences in marginal costs and vertical differentiation. A key property is that operators’ equilibrium profit is unaffected by an identical change in all termination rates in the market - we call this the profit neutrality hypothesis. The model is well suited for econometric implementation. We use a panel data set comprising north western European mobile operators to estimate equilibrium profit functions and find that we cannot reject the profit neutrality hypothesis. The results suggest that a reduction in mobile termination rate levels in mature markets will not necessarily benefit consumers

    Empirical evidence on the relationship between mobile termination rates and firms’ profit

    The comprehensive theoretical literature on mobile termination rates (MTRs) is inconclusive on how the level of MTRs affects overall consumer charges and firms’ profit. In a theoretical model, well suited for econometric implementation, we show that where consumers buy a bundle with included usage, as we now observe in the market, the level of MTRs has no impact on retail prices and firms’ profit. We use a panel data set from saturated European markets and find that an identical change in MTRs does not have a significant impact on firms’ profit

    Mobile telephony in emerging markets

    Rapidly increasing sales of multi-SIM phones, mobile penetration rates above 100% and reported customer behavior all point to the fact that a significant share of mobile customers in emerging markets tend to use more than one SIM card. A primary motive for this is to avoid making expensive off-net calls. We add a segment of flexible prepaid customers, who choose to "multi-sim" in equilibrium to the seminal model of competing telephone networks a la Laffont, Rey and Tirole (1998b). In equilibrium, the networks choose to set a very high prepaid off-net price to achieve segmentation. This incentive prevails, even if termination rates are set to marginal costs

    A serological survey for brucellosis in reindeer in Finnmark county, northern Norway

    During September-December, 1990 to 1994, serum samples from a total of 5792 semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandm tarandm) from Finnmark county, northern Norway, were screened for brucellosis on an indirect ELISA. There were no serologically positive animals. Twenty six of the animals had levels of antibodies detectable on the ELISA and were classed as suspicious, but the ELISA optical density readings were low compared to the readings for reindeer that were both culture positive and seropositive for Brucella suis biovar 4. When assayed on the standard tube agglutination test (STAT), all the 26 animals were seronegative. When absorbed with cells of Yersinia enterocolitica 0-9, the antibody detectable on the ELISA could be removed to a great extent from most of the sera, indicating previous or ongoing exposure to bacteria serologically cross-reacting with Brucella in these animals. We concluded that brucellosis was not present among reindeer in Finnmark during this study. This is supported by the absence of any reports of brucellosis among reindeer in Norway

    Deuteros 2.0: Peptide-level significance testing of data from hydrogen deuterium exchange mass spectrometry

    Summary: Hydrogen deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) is becoming increasing routine for monitoring changes in the structural dynamics of proteins. Differential HDX-MS allows comparison of individual protein states, such as in the absence or presence of a ligand. This can be used to attribute changes in conformation to binding events, allowing the mapping of entire con-formational networks. As such, the number of necessary cross-state comparisons quickly increas-es as additional states are introduced to the system of study. There are currently very few software packages available that offer quick and informative comparison of HDX-MS datasets and even few-er which offer statistical analysis and advanced visualization. Following the feedback from our origi-nal software Deuteros, we present Deuteros 2.0 which has been redesigned from the ground up to fulfil a greater role in the HDX-MS analysis pipeline. Deuteros 2.0 features a repertoire of facilities for back exchange correction, data summarization, peptide-level statistical analysis and advanced data plotting features.
