    Delivering professional doctorate education: challenges and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Professional Doctorates have similar attributes of a PhD, but are arguably not as universally known. Moreover, professional doctorates have an added level of complexity, as students become scholar-practitioners by ensuring that they make a significant contribution to professional practice. However, professional doctorate education is often challenging due to the lack of research preparedness of professional doctorate students, who typically have been away from higher education for a number of years. Although these students may have built astute business mind sets, it could be argued that their approach to scholarly research is less so. So to achieve engaged scholarship that enables professional doctorate students to become scholar practitioners, it is crucial to create the correct learning environment. Using the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) at Liverpool Business School, UK, as a case study, the ability to deliver professional doctorate education is explored, and pertinently the challenge and experience of how the teaching and learning environment has transitioned since the COVID-10 pandemic is evaluated. Finally, key lessons are outlined as to how to design professional doctorate programmes that are resilient to disruptions to conventional teaching and learning practices

    Quantum Time and Spatial Localization: An Analysis of the Hegerfeldt Paradox

    Two related problems in relativistic quantum mechanics, the apparent superluminal propagation of initially localized particles and dependence of spatial localization on the motion of the observer, are analyzed in the context of Dirac's theory of constraints. A parametrization invariant formulation is obtained by introducing time and energy operators for the relativistic particle and then treating the Klein-Gordon equation as a constraint. The standard, physical Hilbert space is recovered, via integration over proper time, from an augmented Hilbert space wherein time and energy are dynamical variables. It is shown that the Newton-Wigner position operator, being in this description a constant of motion, acts on states in the augmented space. States with strictly positive energy are non-local in time; consequently, position measurements receive contributions from states representing the particle's position at many times. Apparent superluminal propagation is explained by noting that, as the particle is potentially in the past (or future) of the assumed initial place and time of localization, it has time to propagate to distant regions without exceeding the speed of light. An inequality is proven showing the Hegerfeldt paradox to be completely accounted for by the hypotheses of subluminal propagation from a set of initial space-time points determined by the quantum time distribution arising from the positivity of the system's energy. Spatial localization can nevertheless occur through quantum interference between states representing the particle at different times. The non-locality of the same system to a moving observer is due to Lorentz rotation of spatial axes out of the interference minimum.Comment: This paper is identical to the version appearing in J.     Field on Poincare group and quantum description of orientable objects

    We propose an approach to the quantum-mechanical description of relativistic orientable objects. It generalizes Wigner's ideas concerning the treatment of nonrelativistic orientable objects (in particular, a nonrelativistic rotator) with the help of two reference frames (space-fixed and body-fixed). A technical realization of this generalization (for instance, in 3+1 dimensions) amounts to introducing wave functions that depend on elements of the Poincare group GG. A complete set of transformations that test the symmetries of an orientable object and of the embedding space belongs to the group Π=G×G\Pi =G\times G. All such transformations can be studied by considering a generalized regular representation of GG in the space of scalar functions on the group, f(x,z)f(x,z), that depend on the Minkowski space points xG/Spin(3,1)x\in G/Spin(3,1) as well as on the orientation variables given by the elements zz of a matrix ZSpin(3,1)Z\in Spin(3,1). In particular, the field f(x,z)f(x,z) is a generating function of usual spin-tensor multicomponent fields. In the theory under consideration, there are four different types of spinors, and an orientable object is characterized by ten quantum numbers.     Group cognitive analytic music therapy: a quasi-experimental feasibility study conducted in a high secure hospital

    This study conducted a feasibility patient preference quasi-experimental study of group cognitive analytic music therapy (G-CAMT) for mentally disordered offenders. Participants either chose or were randomised to 16 sessions of manualised G-CAMT (N = 10) plus treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU alone (N = 10). Self-rated and staff-rated outcomes were assessed at baseline, post-intervention and 8-weeks post-intervention. Residency was assessed at 2-year follow-up. Results indicate that G-CAMT was easily implemented; 9/10 participants completed G-CAMT and attendees had high satisfaction with the approach. Session attendance was high; 4/10 participants attended all sessions. At the 8-week follow-up, 3/9 G-CAMT participants had reliable reductions (i.e. statistically reliable pre to 8-week follow-up change results) in intrusive/possessive behaviours and fear of separation/abandonment. On the staff-rated outcome measure G-CAMT participants as a group were statistically significantly friendlier compared to TAU at 8-week follow-up (U = 0.50, p = 0.009, d = 1.92, CI 0.44 to 3.11). There were no differences between the arms in terms of residency outcomes at 2-year follow-up. The study is discussed in terms of G-CAMT’s theoretical grounding and high acceptability. The study is limited by its small sample size, but indicates the possibility of progressing onto a full trial

    Prospective randomized trial of iliohypogastric-ilioinguinal nerve block on post-operative morphine use after inpatient surgery of the female reproductive tract

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>To determine the impact of pre-operative and intra-operative ilioinguinal and iliohypogastric nerve block on post-operative analgesic utilization and length of stay (LOS).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We conducted a prospective randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial to assess effectiveness of ilioinguinal-iliohypogastric nerve block (IINB) on post-operative morphine consumption in female study patients (<it>n </it>= 60). Patients undergoing laparotomy via Pfannenstiel incision received injection of either 0.5% bupivacaine + 5 mcg/ml epinephrine for IINB (Group I, <it>n </it>= 28) or saline of equivalent volume given to the same site (Group II, <it>n </it>= 32). All injections were placed before the skin incision and after closure of rectus fascia via direct infiltration. Measured outcomes were post-operative morphine consumption (and associated side-effects), visual analogue pain scores, and hospital length of stay (LOS).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No difference in morphine use was observed between the two groups (47.3 mg in Group I vs. 45.9 mg in Group II; <it>p </it>= 0.85). There was a trend toward lower pain scores after surgery in Group I, but this was not statistically significant. The mean time to initiate oral narcotics was also similar, 23.3 h in Group I and 22.8 h in Group II (<it>p </it>= 0.7). LOS was somewhat shorter in Group I compared to Group II, but this difference was not statistically significant (<it>p </it>= 0.8). Side-effects occurred with similar frequency in both study groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this population of patients undergoing inpatient surgery of the female reproductive tract, utilization of post-operative narcotics was not significantly influenced by IINB. Pain scores and LOS were also apparently unaffected by IINB, indicating a need for additional properly controlled prospective studies to identify alternative methods to optimize post-surgical pain management and reduce LOS.</p
