Shear behavior of a shear thickening fluid-impregnated aramid fabrics at high shear rate

    Get PDF
Shear-thickening fluid-impregnated aramid (STF-im-AR) fabrics have been manufactured for advanced soft body armor applications for which they provide improved ballistic and stab resistances. It is not yet clear whether or not such improvements can be attributed solely to the STF. In this study, the rate-dependent behavior of an STF-im-AR fabric was investigated at the fabric level, using uniaxial tensile, bias-extension, and picture-frame tests. Rate-dependent behavior of the STF-im-AR fabric was observed during uniaxial tensile testing; however, the effect of the STF treatment was slight and consistent with only the inherent effect of the polymeric nature of its constituent fibers. The shear rigidity of the STF-im-AR fabric increased, due to the presence of the STF and the sensitivity of the fabric's shear stiffness to changes in the shear strain rate also increased slightly. This rate-sensitive shear stiffness of STF-im-AR fabrics may contribute to improved ballistic and stab resistances

The Automatic Generation of Contextual Questions and Answers for English Learners

    Get PDF
Understanding context is essential for ESL (English as a Second Language) students to become skilled in English. While there is an abundance of extant contextual questions, they are not tailored to ESL teachers’ course objectives and reading materials. For this reason, ESL teachers must continuously create their own contextual questions. The NLP question and answer generation tasks can lift ESL teachers’ workload by creating MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions), T/F (True or False) questions, and fill-in-the-blank questions, along with answers. We deployed a model which automatically generates MC and Wh- questions with answers. We display several examples and explain the process for generating MC and Wh- questions and answers. For our research methods, we first performed text preprocessing with the CoNLL-2014 and BEA-2019 datasets, which consist of essays written by native and non-native English students. After that, we deployed GPT-2, BERT, and T5 in order to complete the question and answer generation task. The contextual question and answer generation model will contribute specifically to ESL teachers who manually create MC and Wh- questions for ESL students, as well as to the fields of education, digital humanities, and computer science. In addition, we share tutorials for this task with the public so that anyone can make use of our research

Ion-selective and chemical-protective elastic block copolymer interphase for durable zinc metal anode

Aqueous rechargeable batteries based on zinc anodes are among the most promising systems to replace conventional lithium-ion batteries owing to their intrinsic safety, high ionic conductivity, and economic benefits. However, inferior reversibility of zinc anode resulting from zinc dendrites and surface side reactions limits the practical realization of zinc-ion batteries. Herein, we develop a thin but robust polymeric artificial interphase to enhance reversibility of zinc anode. The grafted maleic anhydride groups in the polymer structure restrain the detrimental reactions through selective zinc-ion penetration and homogenize ion distribution, leading to a smooth electrode surface after plating-stripping processes. Consequently, the coated zinc anode shows excellent stability with a long-term symmetric cell lifespan (>3,000 h at 3 mA??cm???2) and maintains capacity retention of 80% after 2,500 cycles, paired with a manganese oxide cathode. This study provides a facile fabrication process and accessible analysis methods to rationalize the development of high-performance zinc-ion batteries

Cerebral Infarction as a Complication of Nephrotic Syndrome: A Case Report with a Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Arterial thrombosis is relatively rare compared with venous thrombosis in nephrotic syndrome. However, the assessment of its pathogenesis and risk factors in individual patient with nephrotic syndrome is necessary to allow appropriate prophylactic management because it is a potentially serious problem. Hereby, with review of the literature, we report a case of a 53 yr-old man with cerebral infarction associated with nephrotic syndrome due to focal segmental glomerulosclerosis during the course of treatments with diuretics and steroid. It reveals that the hypercoagulable state in nephrotic syndrome can be associated with cerebral infarction in adults. Prophylactic anticoagulants can be considered to reduce the risk of serious cerebral infarction in nephrotic patients with risk factors such as severe hypoalbuminemia and on diuretics or steroid treatment, even in young patients regardless of types of underlying glomerular diseases

A tick survey was conducted to determine the relative abundance and distribution of ticks associated with selected mammals in the Republic of Korea (ROK) during 2008-2009. A total of 918 ticks were collected from 76 mammals (6 families, 9 species) captured at 6 provinces and 3 Metropolitan Cities in ROK. Haemaphysalis longicornis (54.4%) was the most frequently collected tick, followed by Haemaphysalis flava (28.5%), Ixodes nipponensis (7.6%), Ixodes pomerantzevi (4.8%), Ixodes persulcatus (4.6%), and Haemaphysalis japonica (0.1%). Adults (57.0%) and nymphs (28.7%) of Ixodes and Haemaphysalis spp. were collected most frequently from medium or large mammals in this survey, while few larvae (14.3%) were collected. Hydropotes inermis was the most frequently captured mammal (52.6%), with a 16.4 tick index and 5 of 6 species of ticks collected during this survey. H. longicornis (69.7%) was the predominant tick collected from H. inermis, followed by H. flava (22.2%), I. persulcatus (6.1%), I. nipponensis (1.8%), and H. japonica (0.2%)

Drosophila TRPN( = NOMPC) Channel Localizes to the Distal End of Mechanosensory Cilia

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: A TRPN channel protein is essential for sensory transduction in insect mechanosensory neurons and in vertebrate hair cells. The Drosophila TRPN homolog, NOMPC, is required to generate mechanoreceptor potentials and currents in tactile bristles. NOMPC is also required, together with a TRPV channel, for transduction by chordotonal neurons of the fly's antennal ear, but the TRPN or TRPV channels have distinct roles in transduction and in regulating active antennal mechanics. The evidence suggests that NOMPC is a primary mechanotransducer channel, but its subcellular location-key for understanding its exact role in transduction-has not yet been established. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, by immunostaining, we locate NOMPC at the tips of mechanosensory cilia in both external and chordotonal sensory neurons, as predicted for a mechanotransducer channel. In chordotonal neurons, the TRPN and TRPV channels are respectively segregated into distal and proximal ciliary zones. This zonal separation is demarcated by and requires the ciliary dilation, an intraciliary assembly of intraflagellar transport (IFT) proteins. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide a strong evidence for NOMPC as a primary transduction channel in Drosophila mechansensory organs. The data also reveals a structural basis for the model of auditory chordotonal transduction in which the TRPN and TRPV channels play sequential roles in generating and amplifying the receptor potential, but have opposing roles in regulating active ciliary motility

Effect of shared decision-making education on physicians’ perceptions and practices of end-of-life care in Korea

    Get PDF
Background Evidence of the ethical appropriateness and clinical benefits of shared decision-making (SDM) are accumulating. This study aimed to not only identify physicians’ perspectives on SDM, and practices related to end-of-life care in particular, but also to gauge the effect of SDM education on physicians in Korea. Methods A 14-item questionnaire survey using a modified Delphi process was delivered to nephrologists and internal medicine trainees at 17 university hospitals. Results A total of 309 physicians completed the survey. Although respondents reported that 69.9% of their practical decisions were made using SDM, 59.9% reported that it is not being applied appropriately. Only 12.3% of respondents had received education on SDM as part of their training. The main obstacles to appropriate SDM were identified as lack of time (46.0%), educational materials and tools (29.4%), and education on SDM (24.3%). Although only a few respondents had received training on SDM, the proportion of those who thought they were using SDM appropriately in actual practice was high; the proportion of those who chose lack of time and education as factors that hindered the proper application of SDM was low. Conclusion The majority of respondents believed that SDM was not being implemented properly in Korea, despite its use in actual practice. To improve the effectiveness of SDM in the Korean medical system, appropriate training programs and supplemental policies that guarantee sufficient application time are required

Detection of delamination of steel–polymer sandwich composites using acoustic emission and development of a forming limit diagram considering delamination

    No full text
The formability of steel–polymer sandwich composites was investigated using a new forming limit diagram (FLD) while considering delamination and fracture. The acoustic emission (AE) technique was used to observe delamination during the forming process. Several tests, including tensile and lap shear tests, were performed to identify the AE features of delamination. In addition, finite element simulations were carried out using the cohesive zone model to predict the delamination of steel–polymer sandwich composites. An FLD of the sandwich composite was also constructed using the finite element model. Finally, the effect of interfacial adhesion on the formability of sandwich composites was investigated, from which the optimal condition for interfacial adhesion (in terms of ensuring the formability of the sandwich composite) was obtained
